1 – I Thought My Wedding Day Would Be the Beginning of Forever, Until I Saw What Someone Had Done to My Hair

I used to believe that the worst thing a person could do to you was break your heart.

Then I woke up on my wedding day and discovered that someone had taken away my hair while I slept.

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the bathroom mirror, trying to make sense of the woman looking back at me.

My brown hair was gone.

Not shortened.

Not tangled or badly styled.

Gone.

Uneven stubble covered my scalp, and my skin was red and irritated in places where the razor had passed too close.

I lifted a trembling hand and touched my head.

The moment my fingers brushed the rough surface, my stomach tightened.

I checked behind my ears, then the back of my head.

There was no mistake.

Someone had shaved me.

Someone had done it deliberately.

And today was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.

My wedding dress was hanging in its garment bag beside the bedroom wardrobe.

The shoes I'd chosen for the ceremony sat in their original boxes near the window.

A small jewelry case rested on the dresser, holding the earrings my grandfather had given me before he died.

Everything was ready.

Everything except me.

I looked down at my hands and realized they were shaking so badly that I had curled them into fists without noticing.

Then I remembered Carter.

My fiancé, Carter Whitmore, had always been particular about my appearance.

He liked my hair long.

He liked it when I wore it loose, especially when we went out for dinner or attended one of his business events.

He used to run his fingers through it while we watched television.

Sometimes, he'd stand behind me in front of a mirror and tell me how beautiful it looked.

I had believed him.

That was the part that hurt most when I thought about it later.

I had trusted his compliments because I thought they came from love.

Now I stood in front of the bathroom mirror, nearly bald, wondering whether the man I planned to marry had ever loved me at all.

I tried to cry.

Nothing happened.

My eyes burned, but the tears refused to come.

I turned on the faucet and splashed cold water over my face.

Then I gripped the edge of the sink and took several slow breaths.

The wedding was only hours away.

People would arrive expecting a bride in an ivory dress, with brown curls falling over her shoulders.

They would expect photographs, smiles, flowers, and speeches.

They would expect me to walk toward Carter as if I had never doubted him for a second.

I couldn't imagine doing any of it.

I couldn't even imagine leaving the bathroom.

But the longer I stood there, the more one thought began to push through the shock.

Who had done this?

I hadn't gone to bed expecting trouble.

I had gone to sleep believing my life was finally falling into place.

Carter and I had spent months planning the wedding.

We had chosen the date, approved the flowers, discussed the guest list, and gone over the ceremony details until there seemed to be nothing left to decide.

My grandfather's death had left a space in my life that nobody could fill.

For a long time, I had wondered whether I would ever feel secure enough to build a future with someone.

Then Carter came along.

He was confident, charming, and good at making people feel that he had everything under control.

When he entered a room, people noticed.

When he spoke, they listened.

He knew how to make a compliment sound personal and a promise sound certain.

I had mistaken those qualities for proof that he was dependable.

Looking back, I could see how often I had accepted what he said without asking what he wanted in return.

At the time, I thought I was being generous.

I thought love meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

I didn't yet understand that trust without questions could become a dangerous habit.

I returned to the mirror.

My reflection had not improved.

The thin red mark near my ear was more visible now that I was looking for it.

I pressed a fingertip beside it and winced.

Whoever had done this had not cared whether they hurt me.

That realization finally brought tears to my eyes.

I sat on the closed toilet lid and covered my face.

For a few minutes, I let myself feel everything.

The humiliation.

The confusion.

The awful knowledge that someone had entered a private part of my life and decided to turn it into a joke.

I imagined the guests whispering when I appeared.

I imagined Carter watching me walk down the aisle.

Would he laugh?

Would he pretend to be shocked?

Would he stand there looking innocent while everyone wondered what had happened to me?

I hated that I could picture those things so clearly.

Then I hated myself for still worrying about how he might react.

I had more important questions to answer.

Was I safe?

Who had access to the room?

And why would anyone choose my wedding day to do something so cruel?

I had no answers.

Only the mirror, the red mark beside my ear, and a wedding dress waiting in the next room.

I stood up.

My knees felt weak, but they held me.

I washed my face again and dried it with a towel.

Then I walked into the bedroom and sat beside my suitcase.

For a moment, I considered calling the entire wedding off.

The thought was almost comforting.

I could tell everyone I was ill.

I could ask them to leave me alone.

I could spend the day somewhere nobody knew me and decide what to do with my life later.

But the idea of disappearing because someone had humiliated me made something inside me resist.

I had done nothing wrong.

I had trusted someone.

If that trust had been misplaced, I would have to face it.

I wouldn't make the decision simply because I was frightened of being seen.

My phone lay on the bedside table.

Several notifications appeared on the screen, but I ignored them.

I wasn't ready to speak to anyone who might ask why I wasn't getting dressed.

Instead, I looked at the wedding invitation resting beside the phone.

My name was printed next to Carter's.

Rachel Bennett and Carter Whitmore.

Two names joined together as if the future had already been settled.

I picked up the invitation and turned it over.

On the back, I had written a reminder weeks earlier about the jewelry my grandfather wanted me to wear.

His gift had always mattered to me.

Arthur Bennett had been the one person who never seemed impressed by Carter's charm.

He had listened politely when I spoke about my fiancé, but he rarely offered the enthusiasm I wanted from him.

At first, I thought he simply needed more time.

My grandfather had been careful with people.

He watched them before deciding what he thought of them.

I had once complained that he was being unfair.

He had only asked me to be patient.

I wished I had understood why.

I placed the invitation back on the table and looked toward the garment bag.

The dress had cost more than I wanted to admit.

I had chosen it because it was simple enough to feel like me, but elegant enough for the ceremony I had imagined.

I could still picture myself wearing it with my hair arranged in loose waves.

Carter had liked that idea.

He had said he wanted to see me exactly that way when I walked toward him.

I wondered whether he had known, even then, that I would never get that moment.

The thought made my hands tighten around the edge of the mattress.

I couldn't prove anything.

Not yet.

But I could stop pretending that the situation was normal.

Someone had done something deliberate to me.

And if Carter knew more than he was admitting, I would have to discover it for myself.

I stood and walked to the wardrobe.

My wedding dress was still there.

The pearl buttons ran neatly down the back, each one sewn into place by someone who had taken care with the work.

I touched the fabric through the garment bag.

Then I stepped away.

I wasn't ready to put it on.

Not until I knew what I was going to do.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was Margaret Ellis.

For the first time that morning, I felt something other than fear.

Margaret had been my grandfather's attorney for more than two decades.

She knew the details of his estate, including the arrangements he had made for me before his death.

She also knew Carter.

More importantly, she had never been afraid to question him.

I answered.

"Rachel, are you all right?"

I opened my mouth, but no words came out at first.

Then I told her what had happened.

I kept my explanation short.

I didn't want to hear myself describe the humiliation in greater detail than necessary.

Margaret listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she took a slow breath.

"Are you hurt?"

"Only a little. There's a small cut near my ear."

"Have you spoken to Carter?"

"No."

"Then don't rush into a conversation with him until you've had time to think."

I looked at my reflection in the darkened bedroom window.

For the first time since waking up, I felt that I didn't have to make every decision alone.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do," I admitted.

"You don't have to decide everything this minute."

Her voice was steady.

I held the phone a little tighter.

Outside, the morning continued as if nothing had happened.

Cars passed along the street.

Somewhere nearby, a dog barked.

The ordinary sounds made the whole thing feel even stranger.

I had expected my wedding day to be full of excitement.

Instead, I was standing in my bedroom, trying to understand how my life had changed before I had even gotten dressed.

Margaret asked me to tell her exactly what I knew.

I did.

When I finished, she reminded me that I still had choices.

I listened.

Then I looked once more at the dress waiting beside the wardrobe.

I had no idea whether I would wear it.

But I knew I wasn't going to let someone else's cruelty make the decision for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: My Grandfather Had Warned Me About Men Who Wanted More Than Love, and That Morning I Finally Understood Why

I used to believe that the worst thing a person could do to you was break your heart.
