Another contained old school papers and photographs that belonged to Michael.

The third was filled with things Jessica had kept from the boys' early childhood.

She lifted a tiny pair of shoes from the top.

“I can't believe they were ever this small.”

I smiled.

“They were smaller than that when they first came home.”

She laughed softly.

“I know. But looking at these makes it hard to remember.”

We set the shoes aside for the boys to see.

Then we opened a box of school drawings.

Owen had drawn a house with a yellow roof and four people standing in front of it. Caleb had drawn what appeared to be a dinosaur wearing a hat.

Jessica held up the picture.

“I don't remember this one.”

“He was very proud of that dinosaur.”

She smiled and placed the drawing in a pile of things to keep.

We worked slowly.

There was no reason to hurry, and for once, nobody was waiting for me to finish so I could take care of something else.

After an hour, we had moved three boxes into the hallway.

The closet looked different already.

My dresses hung without being pressed against cardboard. My shoes had room on the floor, and I could reach the small suitcase I kept on the upper shelf.

Jessica stood with her hands on her hips.

“That looks better.”

“It does.”

“I should have done this when you first moved in.”

I straightened a hanger.

“You were busy.”

“So were you.”

She said it quietly.

I looked at her.

She wasn't asking me to excuse what had happened. She was simply acknowledging that I had been busy, too.

“I think we both got used to doing things a certain way,” I said.

“Michael gets used to things quickly when they make his life easier.”

There was enough truth in that statement that I nearly laughed.

Instead, I said, “He isn't the only one who has to change.”

“No,” she agreed. “I'm learning that.”

We carried the boxes to the spare room, where Jessica said she would sort them later.

When we returned, she looked at the empty space in my closet.

“You could put a little chair in here, if you wanted.”

I glanced at her.

“A chair?”

“In your room. Or maybe a small desk. Something that makes it feel like your space.”

I had been thinking the same thing, though I hadn't told anyone.

“I might look for a small chair.”

“You should.”

I wasn't sure whether she understood how much that simple permission meant to me.

I didn't need her permission to buy a chair. I knew that.

But I had spent so much time adjusting myself to the needs of the household that I had stopped imagining what I might add to a room for my own comfort.

After lunch, I drove to a secondhand furniture shop.

I told Jessica where I was going, not because I needed approval, but because it was courteous to let someone know when I would be out.

She asked whether I wanted her to come.

“Not today,” I said. “I'd like to look by myself.”

“All right.”

The shop smelled of old wood and furniture polish.

I walked between tables, lamps, and shelves crowded with mismatched cups. Near the back, I found a small wooden chair with a padded seat covered in faded green fabric.

It wasn't elegant.

One arm had a shallow scratch, and the wood was darker in places where hands had rested over the years.

But it was sturdy, and when I sat down, my feet rested comfortably on the floor.

I imagined it beside my bedroom window.

I imagined sitting there with a book while the house carried on around me.

I asked the clerk how much it cost.

The price was reasonable, though I still needed to consider the budget I had made with my friend.

I stood beside the chair for a while.

Then I bought it.

The delivery was scheduled for Monday afternoon.

When I got home, Michael was in the living room, trying to fix a loose leg on one of the boys' desks.

He looked up as I came through the door.

“Did you find something?”

“A chair for my room.”

“Good.”

He returned to the desk.

Then he looked up again.

“Where are you going to put it?”

“Beside the window, I think.”

He nodded.

“There's enough room there.”

I waited for a question about why I needed a chair or whether it was worth buying one if I might move.

He didn't ask.

I went upstairs and measured the space beside the window with a tape measure I found in the drawer.

The chair would fit if I moved the laundry basket and shifted the small table closer to the wall.

I wrote the measurements in my notebook.

The apartment had an empty living room and an empty bedroom. It would need furniture, dishes, towels, and all the small things that made a place comfortable.

The chair was only one piece of furniture.

Still, buying it felt like a decision made for myself.

That evening, Michael asked whether I wanted to watch a movie with the family.

I said yes.

We watched an old comedy that the boys found hilarious and Jessica claimed she had seen too many times.

Halfway through, Caleb leaned against my arm.

I looked down at him and felt the familiar warmth of loving a child who trusted me.

I did not want to lose moments like that.

But I was beginning to understand that I did not have to live in the same house as my grandchildren to remain close to them.

I could visit.

I could invite them over.

I could read to them, take them to the library, and attend their school events.

I could love them without being the person who was always there because no other arrangement had been made.

When the movie ended, Michael began collecting empty glasses.

I stood to help.

He glanced at me.

“You can leave those. I've got them.”

I looked at him for a second.

Then I sat back down.

“All right.”

He carried the glasses into the kitchen.

It was another ordinary thing.

But I noticed that he had offered to do something without turning it into a favor I owed him.

On Monday afternoon, the chair arrived.

The deliverymen carried it upstairs and set it beside the window.

I thanked them and closed the door behind them.

Then I moved the laundry basket and shifted the table.

The chair fit exactly where I had imagined it.

I sat down.

From the window, I could see a strip of the backyard, the fence, and a patch of sky above the neighboring roof.

It was not the view from my old house.

There was no lavender beneath the window, no garden path, and no blue watering can leaning against the shed.

But it was a view I could sit beside.

I brought my book from the library and opened it on my lap.

For twenty minutes, I read without interruption.

When I heard footsteps in the hallway, I didn't immediately get up.

The footsteps passed my door.

I turned a page.

Later, Jessica came in to tell me dinner was ready.

She noticed the chair.

“That looks nice there.”

“Thank you.”

She glanced at the book.

“Were you reading?”

“I was.”

“Good. I didn't want to interrupt.”

She smiled and left.

I sat for another moment before standing.

The chair had not made the room entirely mine. The house still belonged to Michael and Jessica, and I was still a guest in a family home.

But my room was beginning to feel like a place where I could rest rather than a place where I waited to be needed.

That distinction mattered.

After dinner, I checked the apartment information sheet again.

I did not tear it up or put it away permanently.

I left it in my notebook, where it belonged for now.

There were still questions about money, independence, and what kind of life I wanted in the years ahead.

I didn't have to answer them all that night.

I switched off the lamp and sat for a moment in the quiet.

Then I went to bed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When the Old Habit Returned

On Saturday morning, Jessica knocked on my bedroom door.
