You'll need to arrange your evening around that."

For a moment, he stared at me.

Then he said he thought I was making a point simply to upset him.

I felt a flash of anger.

I had spent three months trying not to upset him.

I had adjusted my schedule, taken care of his children, prepared meals, and kept quiet when I was hurt.

Now that I wanted one afternoon to myself, he treated it as an act of hostility.

"I am not trying to upset you," I said.

"I'm going out because I want to."

He looked away.

I left before the conversation could begin again.

The drive felt strange.

I had taken that road many times during my first weeks in the area, usually to buy groceries or pick up something the children needed.

That morning, I was going somewhere because I had chosen to.

The distinction seemed small from the outside.

Inside me, it felt enormous.

My friend was waiting at a café near the main road.

She stood when she saw me and gave me a hug.

I hadn't realized how much I needed one.

We ordered tea and found a table near the window.

For the first few minutes, we talked about ordinary things.

Then she asked how I was really doing.

I looked at the cup in front of me.

I told her about the dinner.

I told her what Michael had said.

I described the way the boys had gone quiet and how Clare had watched me from across the table.

I told her that I had packed my suitcase before the argument, then kept putting off the decision to leave.

My friend listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she was quiet for a moment.

Then she asked whether I wanted to stay with Michael.

I started to answer.

Nothing came out.

That frightened me more than anything else had.

I had spent weeks explaining why I should stay.

The children needed me.

Michael was busy.

Jessica had a lot to manage.

I had nowhere else ready to go.

I had sold my house.

Every reason seemed practical.

But when someone asked what I wanted, I couldn't find a clear answer.

I looked through the window at the cars moving past.

"I wanted to be close to my family," I said.

My friend nodded.

"That isn't quite the same thing."

I looked at her.

She didn't say anything more.

She didn't need to.

I knew what she meant.

I had wanted closeness.

I had accepted an arrangement that made me useful.

Somewhere along the way, I had begun treating those things as interchangeable.

We sat together for another hour.

She told me about people I hadn't seen in months.

She asked about my old neighborhood and whether I missed my house.

I told her I missed parts of it.

I missed my kitchen.

I missed the way the morning sun reached the table.

I missed being able to decide at the last minute that I wanted to go somewhere without checking whether three children needed looking after.

I even missed some of the inconveniences.

The repair bills.

The narrow steps.

The quiet evenings when I had to find something to occupy myself.

Those things had been difficult, but they had been mine to manage.

My friend didn't tell me to move out.

She didn't tell me to stay.

She simply reminded me that I had choices, even if none of them was easy.

When we finally left the café, I felt lighter.

Not happy exactly.

I still had to return to Michael's house.

I still had to decide what to do next.

But I had spoken the truth aloud to someone who did not immediately ask me to make it more convenient.

On the drive home, I stopped at a small shop and bought a loaf of bread.

It was such an ordinary purchase that I almost smiled at myself.

I had gone out for coffee and returned with bread.

There was no great lesson in it.

Except that I had been able to spend the morning as I pleased.

I had not needed to justify every minute.

When I arrived home, Michael's car was in the driveway.

I carried the bread into the kitchen.

Jessica was standing near the sink.

She asked where I had been.

I told her I had met my friend.

She said they had needed to change their plans.

I put the bread on the counter.

"I'm sorry your plans changed," I said. "But I told you I wasn't available."

Jessica looked at me.

For the first time, I noticed that she seemed more frustrated than angry.

She said the arrangement had worked well until recently.

I understood what she meant.

It had worked well for them.

They had been able to go out whenever they wanted, knowing someone would stay with the children.

They hadn't needed to find a sitter.

They hadn't needed to ask whether I was tired.

They hadn't needed to consider whether I wanted to spend an evening doing something else.

I had made the arrangement convenient.

That didn't mean it had been fair.

"I came here to help," I said. "I didn't agree to give up my own life."

Jessica looked down at the counter.

She didn't answer.

I carried the bread into the pantry.

Then I went upstairs.

The suitcase was still beside the door.

I sat on the bed and opened my notebook.

I wrote about the conversation with my friend.

I wrote about the question she had asked.

Did I want to stay?

I still didn't have a complete answer.

But I was beginning to understand that the answer could not depend entirely on whether Michael wanted me there.

I had to consider whether I could remain without losing my sense of who I was.

That evening, I sat with the boys while they watched television.

Caleb leaned against my arm.

Owen rested his head on a cushion beside me.

I put my hand over Caleb's small fingers.

I loved them so much that the thought of leaving hurt physically.

I didn't want to miss their school stories or their jokes.

I didn't want to become a distant grandmother whose visits were limited to holidays.

But I also didn't want them to believe that love required silence.

I hoped that someday they would understand the difference.

For now, I stayed beside them until the program ended.

Then I kissed the tops of their heads and sent them upstairs.

I turned off the television.

The room became quiet.

I looked toward the hallway where my suitcase waited.

I was not ready to leave that night.

But I was no longer willing to promise myself that I would stay forever.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Had Finally Started Making Plans That Belonged to Me, and the Question I Could No Longer Avoid Was Where I Would Go Next

Saturday arrived with a list of ordinary tasks.
