19 – I Began to Accept That the Truth Might Come From Ordinary Records Rather Than One Perfect Explanation

The next morning, I opened the drawer and took out the folder.

I did not feel the same urgency I had felt when I first found the letter.

The questions still mattered.

I simply understood that urgency would not make the missing information appear.

I sat at the table and read the inventory I had made.

It was plain and unremarkable.

That was precisely why I trusted it.

It described the papers I had checked without assigning them a meaning they did not have.

I added the date of my latest review.

Then I wrote a short note beside the list of missing documents.

I needed to establish whether the settlement papers could be found elsewhere.

That was the next practical question.

I had spent enough time wondering why my mother had chosen to leave the letter.

I had spent enough time trying to understand Carol's reaction.

Neither question could be answered by staring at the same pages.

I needed new information.

I looked at the tin, then at the folder.

They belonged to the same search, but they served different purposes.

The tin held my mother's letter.

The folder held my notes and the papers I had reviewed.

I wanted to keep those things separate so I would not confuse the message with my interpretation of it.

I placed the tin on a clear part of the table and returned to the folder.

I read my questions again.

I had asked Carol what she knew.

She had told me that she recognized Wayne's name but could not confidently remember where she had seen it.

She had also told me she did not clearly remember my mother discussing the settlement.

I could not turn those statements into more than they were.

I could not say Carol had forgotten something important.

I could not say she was concealing information.

I could only say that her memory was uncertain.

That was enough to leave the question open.

I wrote down the words she had used as closely as I could remember them.

Then I stopped writing.

I did not want my notes to become a second version of the conversation, shaped by whatever I happened to be feeling that day.

I wanted them to preserve the distinction between her words and my thoughts.

That distinction had become the most useful thing I had learned since finding the letter.

I could still feel hurt that my mother had left me with so many unanswered questions.

I could still feel frustrated that I could not remember the settlement clearly.

And I could still wonder why Wayne's name had mattered enough for Carol to stop reading.

But none of those feelings told me what had happened.

They told me why I wanted to know.

I folded the notes and put them back in the folder.

Then I took the letter out of the tin.

I read the message once, carefully, without stopping to invent a story around each sentence.

When I finished, I returned it to its place.

I no longer expected the paper to explain itself.

It had given me a reason to begin asking questions.

That was what it could do.

The rest would have to come from other information, if that information could be found.

I thought about my mother for a while.

I wondered whether she had struggled with the decision to leave the letter.

I wondered whether she had expected me to understand it immediately.

I wondered whether she had believed I would remember something about the settlement that I no longer remembered.

Those thoughts came naturally.

I let them pass without writing them down as facts.

I could not ask her what she had intended.

That was one of the limits I had to accept.

But I could still examine what she had left behind.

I could still ask Carol what she remembered.

I could still try to recover the settlement records.

I could do those things without promising myself that they would lead to a complete answer.

That afternoon, I spoke to no one about the letter.

I wanted a little time away from the subject.

I put the papers away and went about the rest of my day.

The questions returned now and then, but I did not stop everything to examine them.

I was learning that I could leave a question unanswered for a few hours without losing the chance to answer it later.

The next time I opened the folder, I would know where I had stopped.

I would not need to begin again from the beginning.

That small change made the process feel less overwhelming.

I had been treating every day as if I needed to solve the entire matter before I could rest.

Now I could make one careful move at a time.

The first move had been to read the letter and ask Carol what she recognized.

The next had been to examine my records and establish what was missing.

The next would be to find out whether the settlement documents could be located.

I did not need to decide the final meaning of the letter before taking that step.

I also did not need to choose between trusting Carol and questioning her memory.

I could listen to her and still recognize the limits of what she knew.

I could respect my mother's message and still admit that I did not understand it.

And I could look into the settlement without assuming that the result would confirm my fears.

For the first time, I felt that my questions had a proper order.

Not an answer.

An order.

That was enough to help me continue.

I put the folder in the drawer and closed it.

The tin remained beside me.

I touched its lid, then moved my hand away.

I no longer needed to open it every time I felt uncertain.

The letter was there.

My questions were there.

And the work of understanding them would continue when I had something new to examine.

<a
