18 – I Went Back Through the Papers With a Different Purpose and Stopped Treating Every Empty Space as a Clue

After my conversation with Carol, I gave myself a day before returning to the folder.

I wanted to let the answers settle without adding new meaning to them.

The name Wayne remained unexplained.

Carol's memory remained uncertain.

The settlement papers were still missing.

Nothing about those facts had changed.

What had changed was the way I approached them.

I no longer expected the next search to reveal a hidden answer simply because I had looked more carefully.

I needed to establish what documents I actually possessed.

That was a smaller task.

It was also one I could complete.

I cleared the table again and brought the folder out of the drawer.

I placed the loose papers in a neat stack.

Then I checked each one, making a simple list of what it was and what it contained.

Some papers had nothing to do with the settlement.

Others were difficult to identify without more context.

I did not discard anything just because I could not immediately see its purpose.

I also did not label anything as important merely because I wanted it to be.

When I finished, I looked over the list.

It was an inventory, not an explanation.

That distinction gave me a little peace.

I could now say what I had checked.

I could also say what I had not found.

There were no settlement documents in the folder.

There was no clear record of the attorney's name.

There was no insurance company identified in the papers I had reviewed.

And there was nothing that explained why Wayne's name appeared in my mother's letter.

I wrote those points at the bottom of the page.

Then I put the list in the folder.

I thought about asking Carol whether she remembered the name of the attorney.

But she had already explained that she did not want to give me a guess and have me mistake it for a fact.

I did not want to push her into doing exactly that.

Instead, I returned to the information I could verify.

I knew my mother had left me the letter.

I knew the letter had led me to Carol.

I knew Carol had asked about the settlement.

I knew she recognized Wayne's name but could not confidently say where she had seen it.

Those facts were enough to define my next questions.

They were not enough to answer them.

I had to become comfortable with that difference.

Later that afternoon, I sat with the tin on the table.

I opened it and lifted the letter out carefully.

The paper had begun to feel familiar in my hands.

I knew the shape of the folds.

I knew where my eyes would go first.

For a moment, I considered reading the letter once more.

Then I stopped.

I had already read it repeatedly.

There was no reason to expect another reading to produce information that was not there.

I returned the letter to the tin.

I did not need to keep searching the same object to prove I was taking the matter seriously.

I needed to look beyond it.

That meant finding out whether the settlement papers still existed somewhere.

I began making a list of places I might reasonably check.

I wrote down the places where I had already looked.

Then I left space beneath them for anything else I could remember.

I did not write down places merely because they sounded possible.

I wanted the list to reflect what I actually knew about my own records.

When I reached the end, I set the pen aside.

There was still more I could do, but I did not need to do it all in one afternoon.

The next day, I checked the folder again only long enough to confirm that I had not overlooked a document in the stack.

I found nothing new.

I felt a brief wave of frustration.

Then I reminded myself that repeating the same search would not make the result different.

I closed the folder.

For years, I had treated the settlement as something other people had handled.

I had not asked enough questions because I believed the matter had been taken care of.

Now I understood that I needed more than a general memory of its conclusion.

I needed to know what I had agreed to and what documents supported that agreement.

That did not mean I had to assume anything improper had happened.

It meant I was entitled to understand my own records.

I could pursue that goal without blaming anyone.

I could also acknowledge that the letter had raised questions I could not answer alone.

Those ideas no longer felt contradictory.

I thought about Carol's response when I asked what she meant by being careful.

She did not want to give me a memory as though it were a fact.

I understood that better now.

I had nearly done the same thing to myself.

I had taken a name I did not understand and tried to build an explanation around it.

I had treated Carol's expression as if it confirmed a suspicion.

I had even begun to wonder whether the settlement had been handled in a way I did not know about.

But none of those thoughts was evidence.

They were reasons to ask questions, nothing more.

I wrote that sentence on my notes.

Questions were reasons to investigate, not answers in themselves.

I read it once and left it alone.

That evening, I placed the folder in the drawer and kept the tin on the table for a little longer.

I did not feel the same need to watch over it.

The letter was still important to me.

It was also still incomplete.

I could respect the message without pretending I understood it.

I could miss my mother without turning every unanswered detail into a sign.

And I could keep looking into the settlement without deciding that the search would uncover something terrible.

The next step was not mysterious.

I needed to find out whether the original documents could be located.

If they existed, they might clarify the names, dates, and terms I could not remember.

If they did not, I would have to consider what other records or reliable memories might be available.

Either outcome would give me a clearer picture of what I could reasonably do next.

I closed the tin and placed it beside the folder.

Then I turned off the kitchen light.

For once, I left the questions on the table without carrying them into every other part of my evening.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Began to Accept That the Truth Might Come From Ordinary Records Rather Than
