16 – I Stopped Trying to Guess the Missing Answers and Prepared to Hear Whatever Carol Could Honestly Tell Me

By the time I returned to my notes, I had begun to recognize a pattern in the way I approached the letter.

I would read it, reach Wayne’s name, and start trying to decide what the name meant.

Then I would remember Carol’s expression and begin guessing what she had recognized.

After that, I would think about the settlement and try to connect the two.

Every time, I ended up in the same place.

I had questions, but not enough information to answer them.

The pattern was exhausting.

I decided to stop repeating it.

That did not mean I would ignore the letter or pretend Carol’s reaction had meant nothing.

It meant I would wait for something more concrete before building an explanation around either one.

I took the folder from the drawer and set it on the table.

Inside were my notes and the papers I had gathered.

I arranged them carefully.

The settlement questions went on top.

My notes about Carol’s responses went beneath them.

The letter stayed in the tin, separate from the other papers.

I wanted to keep the original items together without mixing them with my own interpretations.

That distinction had become important to me.

The letter was something my mother had written.

The notes were things I had written.

They did not have the same value as evidence.

I could use my notes to remember what I wanted to ask.

I could not use them to prove what had happened.

I looked again at the questions.

What did Carol know about the settlement?

Why had she asked about the attorney and the insurance company?

What had she recognized in the letter?

Had my mother ever discussed the settlement with her?

I read each question aloud.

They sounded direct.

They did not assume that anyone had done anything wrong.

They did not require Carol to confirm a theory I had already formed.

That was how I wanted to approach the conversation.

I had no desire to make her defensive before she had even explained herself.

I also had no desire to leave with vague impressions instead of clear answers.

I could be patient without being passive.

I could listen carefully and still ask for clarification when I needed it.

That was a balance I had not considered before.

I had often thought that being reasonable meant accepting the first explanation I received.

Now I understood that I could listen respectfully and still ask someone to explain what they meant.

The settlement had affected my life.

I had a right to understand what had been done and what I had agreed to.

That did not make anyone guilty.

It made the questions legitimate.

I put the notes back into the folder.

Then I checked the tin one last time.

The letter was where I had left it.

I closed the lid and set the tin beside the folder.

I did not expect the objects to tell me anything by themselves.

Their importance came from the fact that my mother had left them for me and that the letter had raised questions I could no longer comfortably ignore.

I could not know whether she had expected Carol to understand the message.

I could not know whether she had believed the settlement needed to be examined.

I could not know why she had chosen that moment to leave the letter.

Those questions belonged on the list, but they did not belong in the category of facts.

I wrote them down on a separate page.

Then I stopped.

I had enough to ask for now.

I did not need to prepare for every possible answer.

I needed to be ready to hear the one Carol actually gave.

When I put the folder away, I felt a small sense of relief.

Nothing had been solved.

But I had stopped asking myself to solve the same problem with the same limited information.

I had also stopped treating my uncertainty as a personal failure.

I could not remember details I had never paid attention to.

I could not recover a conversation simply by wishing I had listened more carefully.

And I could not make my mother’s letter explain more than it said.

What I could do was ask questions now.

That was enough for the moment.

Later, I sat quietly with the thought of speaking to Carol again.

I wondered whether she would be able to explain her reaction.

I wondered whether she would remember something about the settlement that I had forgotten.

I wondered whether the name Wayne would become clearer once I understood the circumstances in which it had appeared.

But I let each thought remain a question.

I did not turn any of them into a prediction.

The next conversation might answer some things and leave others uncertain.

I would have to accept that possibility before I began.

I had spent too long trying to imagine the conversation ahead of time.

I wanted to listen to Carol, not to the version of her I had created in my thoughts.

I wanted to hear what she remembered.

I wanted to understand what she meant when she said she needed to be careful.

And I wanted to know whether there was anything practical I could do to recover the settlement records.

Those were the matters I could bring to her.

The rest could wait until I knew more.

I checked that the folder was closed and that the tin was secure.

Then I left both alone.

For once, I did not feel compelled to reopen them before the day ended.

The questions were still there.

Wayne’s name was still unexplained.

The settlement remained a part of my past that I had never fully understood.

My mother’s reasons for leaving the letter were still unknown.

But I no longer needed to force those separate uncertainties into one answer.

I could take them one at a time.

I could begin with Carol.

I could ask what she knew, listen to what she said, and write down the details I needed to remember.

I could then decide what to do based on the information I actually had.

That was not a dramatic plan.

It was simply a sensible one.

I had been looking for certainty before I was willing to move forward.

Now I understood that I might have to move forward carefully before certainty was possible.

I was ready to have the next conversation.

I was not ready to decide what it would mean.

And I no longer thought I needed to be.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Returned to the
