13 – I Had Spent Years Accepting the Settlement Without Ever Asking Who Had Explained It to Me

I went back to the papers the next morning.

I had slept badly, but I felt calmer than I had the night before.

There was something useful about seeing the same questions in daylight.

I cleared a space on the kitchen table and set the old papers in front of me.

The letter from my mother stayed beside the tin.

I had read it so many times that I knew where every paragraph began.

Still, I kept looking at Wayne’s name.

I wanted the name to become ordinary through repetition.

It did not.

I took a sheet of paper and wrote down what I actually knew about the settlement.

The list was shorter than I expected.

I knew there had been a settlement.

I knew it had been paid.

I knew I had accepted the outcome without understanding every part of it.

Beyond that, most of my knowledge came from what other people had told me.

I could not remember who had explained the arrangement first.

That bothered me more than I wanted to admit.

I had always thought of myself as someone who remembered important conversations.

Apparently, I remembered the feeling of those conversations better than the details.

I remembered being tired.

I remembered wanting the matter finished.

I remembered believing that someone else understood the paperwork.

But I could not put a name beside that memory.

I turned the page over and tried again.

Attorney.

Insurance company.

Amount.

Date.

Documents signed.

I left a space beside each one.

The blank spaces looked like small admissions.

I had spent years telling myself that the settlement was an old matter.

Now I wondered whether I had confused being finished with being understood.

Those were not the same thing.

I put the pen down and looked toward the tin.

My mother had left it where I would find it.

She had also left a note telling me what to do with it.

Whatever her reasons had been, she had made a choice.

I could not know whether she had waited because she was afraid, uncertain, or simply unable to explain what she wanted me to understand.

I could only work with what she had actually left.

The letter.

The tin.

Wayne’s name.

And the questions Carol had asked.

I gathered the papers again, making sure I had not missed anything hidden between the sheets.

There was no extra page.

No envelope with another name.

No explanation written in the margin.

I checked the tin even though I had already checked it several times.

Its bottom was plain.

The inside was empty except for the things I had placed there.

I felt foolish for hoping that another look might produce something new.

Still, I understood why I kept doing it.

When a person has only a few pieces of information, every empty space begins to look like a place where an answer might be hiding.

I did not want to become someone who mistook hope for evidence.

So I stopped searching the tin and returned to my list.

I added one more question.

What had my mother known about the settlement?

I stared at that line for a long time.

It was a simple question, but I could not answer it without guessing.

Her letter suggested that she wanted me to pay attention to something.

It did not explain how much she knew.

It did not tell me whether she had been involved in the settlement or had learned about it later.

And it did not tell me why Wayne’s name mattered to Carol.

I could imagine several explanations.

None of them was reliable enough to write down as fact.

I crossed out the beginning of a sentence I had started beneath the question.

It had begun with the words, “She must have known.”

I replaced it with, “I do not know what she knew.”

That was less satisfying.

It was also true.

I made myself a cup of coffee and carried it back to the table.

The coffee cooled while I looked at the list.

I thought about calling Carol immediately.

Then I remembered the way our last conversation had unfolded.

She had asked me questions I could not answer.

I had given her what little information I had.

And when she reached Wayne’s name, something in her expression changed.

I wanted to understand that moment.

But calling her without organizing my thoughts might only leave me with more questions and the same uncertainty.

I decided to wait until I could speak without trying to force her answers into a shape I already expected.

That decision did not make the waiting easy.

I folded the sheet and placed it beside my mother’s letter.

Then I wrote Carol’s name at the top of a fresh page.

I left space beneath it.

I wanted to listen carefully when we spoke again.

I also wanted to remember the exact words she used, rather than the conclusions I might draw afterward.

For years, I had treated the settlement as a matter that belonged in the past.

Now I could see that I had never really examined what I remembered about it.

I had accepted the ending without knowing the steps that had led there.

Perhaps there was a reasonable explanation for every blank space.

Perhaps the questions would lead nowhere.

I had to allow for both possibilities.

I closed the folder and set it beside the tin.

For the first time since finding my mother’s letter, I did not immediately reach for either one.

I let them remain on the table while I finished my coffee.

There was no answer waiting for me in the room.

There was only the work of finding out what I knew, what I did not know, and what I needed to ask next.

I could begin there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Before I Spoke to Carol
