12 – The More I Tried to Reconstruct the Past, the More I Realized That My Mother’s Silence Was Not the Only Thing I Needed to Understand

I had started this search because I wanted to understand my mother.

That was still true.

But I was beginning to understand that the letter had raised questions about more than her intentions.

It had exposed the limits of my own memory.

I couldn't remember the attorney's name.

I couldn't identify the insurance company.

I couldn't explain the settlement in enough detail to tell Carol anything she didn't already seem to suspect might be important.

I had thought those details were behind me.

Now they stood between me and the explanation I wanted.

I didn't know whether the missing information would lead to anything significant.

I had to remind myself of that.

There was no proof that the settlement had been mishandled.

There was no proof that Wayne had done anything wrong.

There was no proof that my mother had known something she had deliberately hidden from me.

I had questions.

That was all.

But questions could still be worth asking, especially when they came from someone who had reacted to a letter in a way I couldn't explain.

I kept looking through the papers I had saved.

I tried to be methodical.

If a document seemed relevant, I set it aside.

If I couldn't understand why I had kept it, I didn't automatically assume it mattered.

I wanted to avoid turning an ordinary search into something it wasn't.

I also wanted to make sure I didn't overlook something simply because it looked unimportant.

It was a difficult balance.

I was learning how to look carefully without deciding what I expected to find.

That was not a skill I had needed much in my ordinary life.

Usually, I knew what I was looking for.

I could follow a list, complete a task, or find an answer to a straightforward question.

This was different.

I was trying to reconstruct events from incomplete memories.

I was looking for documents whose location I couldn't remember.

I was trying to understand why a person had reacted to a name.

And I was doing all of it while carrying the knowledge that the one person who might have explained her own reasons was no longer alive.

There was no simple way to make that easier.

Sometimes I caught myself wishing that my mother had said more.

Then I felt guilty.

She had left me something.

I had no right to assume that she had been able to explain everything in the way I wanted.

People leave things unfinished for many reasons.

Some things are difficult to say.

Some are difficult to understand.

Some remain unresolved because the person who knows the answer believes there will be another opportunity to explain it.

I didn't know which, if any, of those possibilities applied to my mother.

I couldn't choose one simply because it made her actions easier to understand.

I had to leave that question open.

I thought about the note again.

I thought about the tin.

I thought about the way I had carried both to Carol, believing that the letter would be enough to explain why I had come.

I could see now why the meeting had unsettled me.

I had expected Carol to begin where I had begun.

With my mother.

Instead, she had started asking about my settlement.

I had thought she was changing the subject.

Now I understood that she might have been trying to establish the background she needed before she could make sense of the letter.

That possibility made the meeting look different in my memory.

I couldn't say whether Carol had intended to tell me more.

I couldn't say whether she had recognized the name and immediately understood a connection.

I could only say that she had asked questions I couldn't answer.

And those questions had forced me to look at the past more carefully.

I was grateful for that, even though I didn't enjoy it.

I had spent years believing that the settlement no longer required my attention.

I had treated it as a finished event because that was how I remembered it.

But remembering that something ended was not the same as understanding how it ended.

I had never thought much about that distinction.

Now I couldn't ignore it.

I wanted to find the original records.

I wanted to know whether they would identify the attorney and the insurance company.

I wanted to understand what had been documented and whether those details could help me make sense of Wayne's name.

I wanted to speak to Carol again.

Those were practical goals.

They gave me something to do while I waited for the larger questions to become clearer.

But I also had to accept that the search might not give me everything I wanted.

The records might be difficult to locate.

My memory might remain incomplete.

Carol might remember only a part of what had happened.

And my mother's reasons for leaving the letter might never become entirely clear.

I didn't like those possibilities.

I couldn't rule them out.

For a long time, I had thought of certainty as something that came with enough patience.

If I waited long enough, thought carefully enough, and asked the right questions, I believed I could eventually make sense of things.

That belief had helped me in many parts of my life.

It was less useful here.

I couldn't make my mother answer.

I couldn't force myself to remember a name I had forgotten.

And I couldn't decide what Carol knew simply by studying the expression on her face.

I needed to accept the limits of what I could control.

That didn't mean giving up.

It meant doing the work without demanding that every effort produce an immediate answer.

I put the papers I had gathered together.

I kept the letter separate.

The tin remained nearby, ordinary and quiet.

I had not found the explanation I wanted.

But I had learned something important about the way I had approached the past.

I had trusted the conclusion without remembering the details.

I had accepted the settlement as finished without knowing whether I could explain it.

I had assumed that my mother's letter was a private matter until Carol's reaction showed me that it might have a wider significance.

I couldn't say where those realizations would lead.

I could only keep them in mind.

The next time I spoke to Carol, I wanted to be better prepared.

Not because I expected to discover something terrible.

Because I wanted to understand what she was asking and why.

I wanted to give her the facts I could establish.

I wanted to ask the questions I had written down.

And I wanted to hear what she had to say without trying to turn her words into an answer before she had finished speaking.

That was the most honest approach I could take.

My mother's letter had brought me to a place I hadn't expected to be.

I was no longer simply grieving someone I had lost.

I was trying to understand a part of my life that had remained unclear long before she died.

I didn't know what the next conversation would bring.

But I knew I was ready to have it.

<a
