9 – I Could No Longer Pretend the Settlement Was Just an Old Memory, Because My Mother’s Letter Had Given Me a Reason to Look Again

I used to believe that leaving something alone was the same as putting it behind me.

That belief had made my life easier.

It had also left me with questions I couldn't answer.

After my meeting with Carol, I found myself thinking about the settlement whenever the house became quiet.

I would remember her expression when she reached Wayne's name.

Then I would remember the questions that followed.

The attorney.

The insurance company.

The details I had never bothered to learn.

I kept returning to the same uncomfortable thought.

What else had I accepted without understanding?

I didn't want to become suspicious of everyone who had ever helped me.

That would have been unfair.

I had no evidence that anyone had done anything wrong.

But I had a letter from my mother, and Carol had reacted to it in a way I couldn't explain.

I couldn't simply dismiss that.

I decided to make another effort to find my old records.

I started with the places where I would normally keep important papers.

I looked through folders I hadn't opened in years.

I checked the documents I had saved from other matters.

I found things I had forgotten about.

Old statements.

Receipts.

Letters that had seemed important at the time.

Some papers had dates that meant nothing to me anymore.

Others reminded me of people I hadn't thought about in years.

But I still couldn't find the settlement documents.

I went through the folders a second time.

I checked the same places again, hoping I had overlooked something.

I hadn't.

The papers weren't where I expected them to be.

That didn't prove they were missing.

It only meant I hadn't found them.

I tried to remember whether I had ever received a complete copy of the settlement paperwork.

I couldn't be certain.

I remembered the matter being handled.

I remembered believing that the people involved knew what they were doing.

But I couldn't reconstruct the process in enough detail to tell myself exactly what had happened.

The more I tried, the more I realized how much of my memory was made up of assumptions.

I had assumed the attorney had explained everything.

I had assumed the insurance company had followed the proper process.

I had assumed that if something important had been left unresolved, someone would have told me.

Those assumptions had allowed me to move forward.

They had also kept me from asking questions.

I sat with that realization longer than I wanted to.

It was uncomfortable to admit that I had been careless with something that mattered.

I could tell myself that I had trusted the right people.

I could tell myself that I had no reason to expect trouble.

But I couldn't use those explanations to fill in details I didn't remember.

I needed to know what had actually happened.

I returned to my mother's letter.

I didn't expect the paper to give me an answer simply because I had looked at it again.

Still, I wanted to understand why Carol had reacted so strongly to Wayne's name.

I read the pages slowly.

I looked for anything I might have misunderstood.

I tried not to turn every sentence into a clue.

That was harder than it sounds.

Once you begin looking for an explanation, ordinary details can start to seem important.

A name becomes a possible connection.

A missing date becomes a possible warning.

A sentence you once read without thinking becomes something you study for meaning.

I didn't want to do that without good reason.

The letter had already brought me to Carol.

That was enough to justify looking more carefully.

It wasn't enough to tell me what the letter meant.

I folded the pages and returned them to the tin.

For a moment, I considered putting the whole thing away until I felt less unsettled.

I was tired of thinking about the past.

I was tired of having no clear answers.

I was tired of wondering whether my mother had known something I didn't.

But putting the letter away wouldn't change what had happened during the meeting.

Carol had asked me questions I couldn't answer.

She had recognized Wayne's name.

And she had connected the letter to my settlement in a way I hadn't expected.

Those facts remained.

I needed to stop treating my discomfort as a reason to avoid them.

I began thinking about the questions I wanted to ask Carol next time.

I wanted to know what she remembered about Wayne.

I wanted to know why the settlement had come to mind.

I wanted to understand whether she had recognized something specific in the letter or whether the name alone had raised concerns.

I also wanted to know whether my mother had ever discussed the matter with her.

I wrote those questions down.

It felt strange to see them on paper.

Until then, they had been moving around in my head without any order.

Writing them down made them look more manageable.

They were still difficult questions.

But at least I could see what I was trying to understand.

I didn't call Carol immediately.

I wanted to give myself time to think.

I also wanted to avoid turning the next conversation into another series of guesses.

If I was going to ask her for help, I needed to listen carefully to what she actually said.

I couldn't demand certainty where none existed.

I couldn't expect her to remember every detail of something that might have happened years earlier.

And I couldn't treat her uncertainty as evidence that she was hiding something.

I had to be fair.

That was important to me.

I had already spent too much time trying to understand a past I could barely remember.

I didn't want to make it harder by deciding what the answers should be before I heard them.

Still, the name Wayne stayed with me.

I couldn't separate it from the image of Carol leaning back after reading the letter.

I couldn't forget how quickly she had moved from the letter to the settlement.

I had come to her because I believed she might help me understand my mother's decision.

Instead, I had discovered that I needed to understand my own history first.

That was where I stood now.

I didn't know whether the settlement papers would answer my questions.

I didn't know whether Carol could explain the significance of Wayne's name.

But I knew that I had reached the point where I could no longer pretend I had nothing left to learn.

The past was not changing.

My understanding of it was.

And I had to follow that change wherever it led.
