8 – I Wanted to Find the Missing Records Before Drawing Conclusions, Because I Was Finally Beginning to Understand How Little I Truly Knew

The settlement had always seemed like something that belonged to another time.

I had put it away mentally and moved on.

Now I was forced to admit that I could not even describe it properly.

That realization followed me through the next part of my search.

I kept thinking about the attorney's name.

Carol had asked for it, and I had been unable to provide it.

I kept thinking about the insurance company.

I had no name for that, either.

Those were basic details.

They should have been easy to find if I had kept the right records.

But I didn't know where the records were.

I had no clear memory of putting them away.

I couldn't remember the last time I had seen them.

I was forced to start with what I could recall.

That wasn't much.

I remembered that the settlement had been handled.

I remembered believing that the matter was over.

I remembered no reason, at the time, to think I would need to revisit it years later.

I couldn't remember every conversation that had led to that belief.

That was the problem with relying on memory.

It preserved the general shape of an experience while allowing the details to fade.

I could remember the feeling of relief without remembering exactly what had been explained to me.

I could remember that someone had taken care of the paperwork without remembering who had done it.

And I could remember moving forward without remembering what questions I might have left unanswered.

I had never thought that forgetting those details would matter.

Now it mattered enough to bring me back to the letter.

I thought about asking Carol for more information.

But I still didn't know what she could tell me.

She had reacted to Wayne's name.

She had asked about the settlement.

She had wanted to know whether I could identify the people who had handled it.

Those were the things I knew.

I couldn't turn them into a larger story without evidence.

I had to be careful.

A person recognizing a name did not prove wrongdoing.

A question about a settlement did not prove that the settlement had been mishandled.

And a letter left by my mother did not automatically mean that every part of my past was connected to it.

I understood those things.

I also understood that ignoring the questions would get me nowhere.

I needed to keep moving carefully.

I needed the original records, if they still existed.

I needed to know what had actually been documented.

And I needed to find out whether the names and details in those documents could help explain Carol's reaction.

That was the work in front of me.

I thought about how different my expectations had been when I first decided to see her.

I had imagined that I would show her the letter and listen while she explained it.

I had pictured a conversation that would bring the matter to a close.

Instead, I had come away understanding that the letter might be the beginning of a longer process.

I didn't like that.

I was already dealing with the loss of my mother.

I hadn't wanted another difficult matter to occupy my thoughts.

I hadn't wanted to question something I had accepted for years.

But wanting the questions to disappear would not make them disappear.

I had learned that much.

I looked at the tin again.

It was still just a tin.

It hadn't become more mysterious because I was worried.

It hadn't changed because Carol had recognized Wayne's name.

The importance lay in what my mother had left inside it and what I had not understood when I found it.

I wondered whether she had known how difficult the questions would be.

I wondered whether she had expected me to feel the same confusion I was feeling now.

I couldn't know.

I tried to imagine her writing the note.

I tried to imagine what she had been thinking when she decided to leave the tin for me.

But I stopped myself before those thoughts became a substitute for facts.

I could imagine many explanations.

Only one, or perhaps none of them, would match what had actually happened.

I needed to remember that.

The letter belonged to the past.

My questions belonged to the present.

And the choices I made now would determine whether I learned anything more.

I had spent too long accepting that the settlement was beyond my concern.

I wasn't going to keep doing that.

I would look for the records.

I would write down the questions I needed answered.

I would speak to Carol again when I had something more concrete to discuss.

I would not accuse anyone based on a reaction or a name.

I would not pretend that my mother had explained something she had never explained.

And I would not let the discomfort of not knowing become another reason to stop looking.

That was the decision I could make without knowing what the truth would be.

It wasn't dramatic.

It didn't solve anything.

But it was honest.

For years, I had treated the settlement as a finished matter because I believed that was what it was.

Now I understood that I had never learned enough to be certain.

I didn't know what the missing records would show.

I didn't know whether they would explain Wayne's place in the story.

I didn't know whether Carol would eventually be able to tell me more.

But I had stopped expecting the answers to arrive simply because I wanted them.

I would have to find them.

I placed the letter somewhere safe and kept the tin beside it.

I wasn't ready to put either one away for good.

Not yet.

My mother had left me something she believed I needed to see.

I owed it to her, and to myself, to understand as much as I could.

The questions were still there.

So was the uncertainty.

But I was no longer willing to mistake silence for an answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Could No Longer Pretend the Settlement Was Just an Old
