7 – The More I Thought About My Mother’s Decision, the Harder It Became to Believe That the Letter Had Been Left by Accident

I kept thinking about my mother's note.

It was strange how a small piece of writing could take up so much space in my mind.

I had read it before visiting Carol.

I had carried it with me.

I had explained that my mother had left it behind.

Yet I still couldn't say exactly what she had intended me to understand.

I knew what I had found.

I knew what Carol had asked.

I knew that Wayne's name had changed the way she looked at the letter.

Beyond that, I had very little.

I tried to be careful with my thoughts.

I didn't want grief to turn uncertainty into suspicion.

My mother had died, and I was still learning how to live with that loss.

It would have been easy to take every unanswered question and turn it into evidence that she had been keeping something from me.

But I didn't want to judge her that way.

She wasn't here to explain herself.

I couldn't ask whether she had been afraid.

I couldn't ask whether she had tried to tell me before.

And I couldn't ask why she had chosen that particular moment to leave me the letter.

I could only consider what she had actually done.

She had kept the letter.

She had left me a note.

She had left the tin where I would find it.

Those were the facts I had.

I didn't need to invent anything beyond them.

Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that the letter had not been left by accident.

I had no proof of that.

But the way Carol had reacted made it difficult to believe that the name inside was unimportant.

I thought about calling Carol again.

I wanted to ask whether she had remembered anything else after our meeting.

I wanted to know whether there was a reason she had asked about the settlement so quickly.

But I stopped myself.

We had already spoken.

I had given her the information I had.

She had read the letter and asked what she needed to ask.

I didn't want to pressure her into saying more before she was ready.

I also didn't want to mistake my own impatience for a reason to demand an answer.

I needed to do the work I had promised myself I would do.

Find the papers.

Establish what I knew.

Separate the facts from the things I was imagining.

That was the only way I could approach the situation fairly.

I began thinking about the settlement as a series of questions rather than a single event.

Who had represented me?

Which insurance company had paid?

What documents had been prepared?

What had I been told at the time?

And why had I never felt the need to ask those questions before?

The last question was the most uncomfortable.

I could blame the passage of time.

I could blame the fact that I had trusted the people involved.

I could say that I had wanted to move forward and had no reason to believe anything required further attention.

Those explanations were probably part of the truth.

But they didn't change the fact that I had accepted not knowing.

I had made peace with an incomplete understanding because it was easier than reopening the past.

Now the past had found its way back to me through my mother's tin.

I thought about how ordinary the container had looked.

If I had seen it without knowing where it came from, I might have assumed it held nothing worth keeping.

I might have put it away with the rest of her belongings.

I might have waited months before opening it.

I might never have connected it to Carol at all.

That thought bothered me.

Not because I believed something terrible would necessarily have happened if I had ignored it.

I couldn't know that.

It bothered me because my mother had made a choice, and I had come close to treating that choice as unimportant.

I didn't want to make the same mistake again.

I wanted to understand why she had left the letter.

I wanted to know whether the settlement and Wayne were connected in a way I had never recognized.

I wanted to find out what Carol knew and what she had only begun to suspect.

But I didn't want to decide the answers before I had the evidence.

That meant accepting a period of uncertainty.

It meant living with questions that had no immediate solution.

I wasn't good at that.

I wanted things to make sense.

I wanted the letter to have one clear purpose.

I wanted Carol to tell me what she knew and explain why it mattered.

I wanted my mother's actions to become understandable without forcing me to reconsider everything I had believed about the past.

But I was beginning to realize that I couldn't demand that kind of simplicity from the truth.

Sometimes the first thing you discover is not an answer.

Sometimes it is the fact that you have been asking the wrong question.

I had started by asking what my mother meant.

Now I was asking what had happened to the settlement.

I didn't know whether those questions would eventually lead to the same answer.

I only knew I could no longer treat them as unrelated.

I took the letter out again and laid it flat.

I read the pages slowly.

I paid attention to the details I had skimmed over before.

I didn't find a sudden explanation.

Nothing on the paper changed because I read it differently.

But I noticed how much I had been relying on my own assumptions.

I had assumed that I understood the circumstances surrounding the settlement.

I had assumed that the letter was mainly about my mother's feelings.

I had assumed that bringing it to Carol would make the uncertainty smaller.

Instead, the meeting had shown me how little I knew.

I folded the pages carefully and put them back where they belonged.

I didn't want to keep reading them until every word became another possible clue.

I needed to let the facts remain facts.

The next step was clear enough.

I would continue looking for the settlement records.

If I found them, I would be able to ask better questions.

If I didn't, I would have to decide what other information might still be available to me.

Either way, I would stop relying on memory alone.

That decision did not make me feel better immediately.

It did, however, give me something solid to do.

I could not bring my mother back.

I could not ask her to explain the letter.

But I could take the trouble she had gone to seriously.

For the first time since finding the tin, I felt that I had a direction.

Not an answer.

A direction.

<a
