Carol asked.

"Not recently."

"Do you still have them?"

"I don't know."

I searched my memory for a box, a folder, or even an old envelope that might contain the documents.

Nothing came to mind.

I knew I had kept important papers over the years.

I also knew that I had moved things around without always keeping track of what went where.

It was possible that the documents were still somewhere in my belongings.

It was equally possible that I had misplaced them.

I couldn't give Carol a useful answer.

She nodded slightly.

I wondered whether she had expected that.

"Why are you asking me all this?" I said.

She glanced at the letter.

"Because you brought me something that mentions Wayne, and you don't seem to know how he fits into your own history."

I didn't like hearing it put that way.

Not because she was being unkind.

Because she was right.

I had brought her a letter I couldn't fully explain.

I had expected her to help me understand it.

Yet I had never bothered to learn the basic facts surrounding the settlement she was now asking about.

I had assumed those details belonged to other people.

The attorney would have known.

The insurance company would have known.

Whoever had handled the paperwork would have known.

I had trusted that the important things had been taken care of.

I had never considered what would happen if I needed to understand them years later.

I looked down at my hands.

"I thought it was finished," I said.

Carol didn't answer immediately.

Then she spoke in a voice that was quieter than before.

"Something can be finished without every question being answered."

I wanted to disagree.

I wanted to tell her that the settlement had been completed and that I had no reason to believe anything was wrong.

But I couldn't honestly say that.

I didn't know enough to defend it.

I didn't know enough to challenge it, either.

That was the uncomfortable part.

I was sitting between two possibilities, with no clear evidence to support either one.

I had no intention of accusing anyone simply because Carol had reacted to a name.

That would have been unfair.

But I also couldn't pretend her reaction meant nothing.

I needed facts.

I needed to know what the letter was trying to tell me.

And I needed to understand why my mother had left it for me.

I thought about the note that had accompanied it.

I had read it so many times that I could remember the feeling it gave me.

It had not felt like an ordinary message.

It had felt like something my mother had been unable to say directly.

I still couldn't understand why.

If she had wanted me to know something, why hadn't she explained it while she was alive?

Perhaps she had tried.

Perhaps there were things I had failed to notice.

That thought made me uncomfortable.

I didn't want to turn my mother's final actions into a list of mistakes I might have made.

I had lost her.

I didn't want to lose the good memories by examining every silence for hidden meaning.

But grief didn't allow me to choose which questions would remain.

Some questions stayed whether I wanted them or not.

Carol moved the letter slightly closer to herself.

She returned to the part where Wayne's name appeared.

I watched her read it again.

I wondered what she was seeing.

I wondered whether she was remembering a conversation, a document, or something that had happened long before I understood the significance of any of it.

I couldn't know.

I had to let her decide what she could tell me.

"Did my mother ever talk to you about the settlement?" I asked.

Carol looked up.

"Not in the way you're asking."

I waited for her to continue.

She didn't.

I could have pushed her.

I could have demanded that she tell me everything she remembered.

But I didn't know what she remembered, and I didn't want to force her into guessing.

I needed her to be honest.

I needed to be honest with myself, too.

The letter had not given me all the answers.

Carol's questions had not proved that anything was wrong.

For now, I had only learned how much I didn't know.

That was enough to make me reconsider the way I had treated the past.

I had believed that once a matter was settled, I no longer needed to understand it.

I had believed that trusting other people meant I could leave the details in their hands.

Maybe that belief had been reasonable at the time.

Maybe it hadn't.

I couldn't change the decisions I had made years earlier.

I could only decide what to do now.

I looked at the tin beside the letter.

It had seemed so ordinary when I first found it.

Now I couldn't look at it without thinking about my mother and the things she had chosen not to explain.

I wondered how long she had kept the letter.

I wondered what had made her decide that I should receive it.

Most of all, I wondered whether she had expected me to come to Carol.

I didn't have an answer.

But I knew I wasn't ready to put the tin away and forget about it.

Not this time.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Had Spent Years Accepting the Settlement as a Finished Matter, Until One Name Made Me Question Everything I Had Never Examined

I had always believed that the settlement was a closed chapter.
