3 – Carol Looked at the Tin as Though It Belonged to an Old Conversation, Then Asked Questions I Had Never Thought to Ask

I told Carol that my mother had left me a note.

I expected that to explain why I had brought the tin.

It didn't.

Carol looked at the container for another moment.

Then she asked whether my mother had explained what it held.

I told her I didn't know.

That was the honest answer.

I had found something my mother wanted me to have, but I hadn't been given a complete explanation of why she had kept it.

I couldn't tell Carol what was inside beyond what I had already discovered.

I couldn't tell her what my mother had intended me to understand.

I could only tell her what I knew.

Carol listened without interrupting.

Her attention made me more conscious of every word I used.

I began to feel as though I was being asked to account for something I hadn't known was important.

I had brought the tin because I needed help understanding it.

Yet Carol's questions made it sound as if the act of bringing it had a meaning of its own.

I didn't understand that meaning.

I wanted her to explain it.

Instead, she asked why I had come to see her.

I thought about giving her the answer I had rehearsed on the way there.

I could have told her that I wanted her opinion.

I could have said that the letter had left me confused.

Both statements would have been true.

Neither would have been enough.

So I reached for the letter.

I had brought it because I wanted Carol to read it for herself.

Until that moment, I had been trying to explain the situation in pieces.

The note.

The tin.

My mother's decision to leave something behind.

I realized that I was making the conversation harder by trying to describe a letter that Carol hadn't seen.

I took the pages out and placed them in front of her.

There were three.

I had read them enough times to remember the parts that had troubled me.

I knew where my attention had stopped each time I went through them.

But I had no idea what Carol would notice.

She began reading.

I watched her face.

At first, there was no obvious reaction.

She moved through the opening lines as though she were simply trying to understand the words.

I tried to sit still.

I wanted to ask what she thought.

I wanted to tell her that I had already read the letter several times.

I wanted to know whether she could see something I had missed.

I said nothing.

I let her continue.

Then she reached a particular name.

Wayne.

I saw the change before she spoke.

It was as though something in the letter had made her reconsider the entire conversation.

Her reading slowed.

She looked at the page again.

For a moment, she seemed to be deciding whether she should say anything.

Then she stopped reading and leaned back.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Until then, I had been hoping that Carol would give me an explanation.

Now I was wondering what she had just recognized.

It was only a name.

At least, it was only a name to me.

But the way Carol reacted made it clear that it wasn't just that to her.

I wanted to ask what Wayne had to do with any of this.

I wanted to know whether she had known him, whether she had spoken to him, and whether the letter had reminded her of something she had tried to forget.

I didn't ask all those questions.

I waited for her to speak.

Carol addressed me quietly.

She wanted to know how much I understood about my settlement.

I stared at her.

The question seemed to come from a different conversation entirely.

I had brought her a letter left by my mother.

I had expected us to discuss what my mother might have meant.

Now Carol was asking about a settlement.

I didn't know why she had chosen that subject.

I didn't know what it had to do with Wayne.

And I didn't know why she had decided that this was the first thing I needed to answer.

I told her the truth.

I knew very little about the settlement.

Almost nothing, in fact.

It wasn't something I had spent much time examining.

I knew that there had been a settlement.

I knew it was part of my past.

But I had never followed every detail or tried to reconstruct the decisions made around it.

At the time, I hadn't thought I needed to.

Looking back, I can see how much I had accepted without questioning.

I had assumed that the people handling the matter had done what they were supposed to do.

I had assumed that the paperwork existed somewhere and that the important details had been taken care of.

I had never asked myself whether I could explain the process from beginning to end.

I couldn't.

Carol seemed to understand that.

She didn't argue with my answer.

She simply moved to another question.

Did I know the name of the lawyer who had represented me?

I searched my memory.

I wanted to give her something useful.

A name.

A detail.

Anything that might explain why she was asking.

But I couldn't remember the attorney's name.

More than that, I realized I had never made an effort to remember it.

I had let the matter remain somewhere in the background of my life.

I told Carol I didn't know.

She took that answer in without comment.

Then she asked whether I knew which insurance company had paid the settlement.

Again, I had no answer.

I had no name to offer.

No document I could point to.

No clear explanation of how the money had been handled.

I sat there feeling the gaps in my own knowledge grow larger with every question.

I had always thought of my ignorance as harmless.

There had been something to deal with, and other people had dealt with it.

I had moved on.

Or I had believed I had.

Now Carol was asking about the details as though they mattered more than I had ever understood.

I began to wonder whether the settlement was the reason Wayne's name had changed her expression.

I wondered whether my mother had known something about it.

I wondered why she had chosen to leave me a letter rather than tell me directly.

But I couldn't connect those questions to any reliable answer.

I looked at the three pages in front of Carol.

The letter had not changed.

The words were the same ones I had read at home.

What had changed was the person reading them.

Carol had reached Wayne's name and suddenly wanted to know about a part of my life I could barely explain.

That was the moment I understood how little I knew about my own past.

And for the first time, I suspected that the things I had never bothered to question might be exactly the things I needed to understand.

<a
