Nothing that looked important.

Just an ordinary container that could have held buttons, old photographs, or the sort of small things people kept because they couldn't bring themselves to throw them away.

My mother had left it behind.

I didn't know why she had kept it.

I didn't even know why she had wanted me to have it.

For a while, I let it sit without opening it.

There were other things to deal with after her death.

Paperwork. Arrangements. Decisions that had to be made even when I wasn't ready to make them.

People called to offer their condolences, and I thanked them.

They asked how I was holding up.

I gave them the answer they expected.

I was managing.

I was taking things one day at a time.

I would be all right.

Those words were easier than telling the truth.

I wasn't all right, but I didn't know what being all right was supposed to look like anymore.

My mother had been part of my life for so long that even the smallest things reminded me of her.

A familiar phrase.

A particular kind of silence.

The way an ordinary object could suddenly make a room feel empty.

I kept finding reasons to put off sorting through her belongings.

Every time I started, I found something that made me stop.

Sometimes it was a photograph.

Sometimes it was a piece of paper with her handwriting on it.

Sometimes it was something so unimportant that I felt foolish for being unable to put it away.

The tin was different.

Not because it looked unusual.

Because I knew it had been left for me.

There was a difference between finding something someone had forgotten and finding something they had deliberately kept for you.

I couldn't explain it at the time.

I only knew that I wasn't supposed to ignore it forever.

So I stopped putting it off.

I sat down with the tin and looked at it for a long time.

I wondered what my mother had intended me to find.

I wondered whether she had wanted me to open it while she was still alive.

Perhaps she had changed her mind about telling me something.

Perhaps she had waited too long.

I couldn't ask her.

That was the part I kept coming back to.

Whatever answer I found inside, I would have to live with it without knowing what she might have said if I'd been able to ask one more question.

I opened the tin.

Inside was a letter.

Not a stack of papers or a collection of old keepsakes.

A letter.

It was clear that someone had meant for it to be read.

I took it out carefully and began to look it over.

The paper felt ordinary in my hands.

There was nothing about it that explained why my mother had kept it separate from everything else.

I began reading.

The first lines didn't tell me much.

They were enough to make me understand that this wasn't a casual note or something she'd written for herself.

Someone had intended the letter to reach me.

Someone had expected me to read it.

I continued.

As I read, I became aware of how little I actually knew about the things my mother had done before I was old enough to understand them.

I knew her as my mother.

I knew the habits and opinions she had carried through the years.

I knew some of the stories she told about her life.

But knowing someone in the present wasn't the same as knowing everything they had done in the past.

I had never seriously considered that distinction.

Now I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I read the letter again.

Then I read it a third time.

I was looking for something I might have missed, some detail that would make the whole thing easier to understand.

Instead, every reading left me with more questions.

Why had she kept it?

Why had she waited?

And why had she left it for me rather than telling me what I needed to know herself?

I wanted to believe there was a simple explanation.

I wanted to believe that I was making too much of an old letter because grief had made everything seem important.

That would have been easier.

I could have put the letter away and returned to the ordinary work of getting through the days.

But the letter would not let me do that.

There was something about it that made ignoring it feel like another kind of mistake.

I began to think about the people who might know more than I did.

People who had been around before I understood what was happening.

People who might have seen things my mother never discussed with me.

One name came to mind.

Carol.

I had reason to believe she might understand something about what I had found.

I couldn't have explained exactly what I expected her to know.

I only knew that I needed to speak to her.

That decision seemed small when I made it.

I wasn't setting out to uncover some great secret.

I wasn't trying to accuse anyone of anything.

I wanted an explanation.

I wanted someone to look at the letter and tell me whether I had misunderstood it.

Most of all, I wanted to hear something that would allow me to stop wondering what my mother had been trying to tell me.

I decided to bring the letter to Carol.

But I didn't want to arrive with nothing except a few pages and a story I couldn't properly explain.

I gathered the letter and the tin.

I checked that I hadn't left anything behind.

Then I put everything together so I could take it with me.

I remember how ordinary the preparations felt.

I was going to meet someone.

I was going to ask questions.

I was going to try to make sense of something that had been sitting in front of me for too long.

I didn't expect the meeting to change the way I looked at my family.

I didn't expect Carol to recognize something before I had even finished explaining why I had come.

And I certainly didn't expect her first question to concern my mother.

I had imagined a conversation in which I did most of the talking.

I would explain where the letter had come from.

I would tell Carol what I understood and what I didn't.

Then she would tell me whether any of it meant something to her.

That was the plan.

Simple.

Reasonable.

The kind of plan people make when they still believe the truth will be easy to recognize once someone points it out.

I was about to learn how little I understood.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I Brought My
