Reed said.

His voice was calm.

I took that as an instruction to return to the work, not as a declaration that the questions no longer mattered.

Odom nodded.

I nodded too.

The motorcycle was still running, and there was work left to do.

I had no reason to believe that finishing it would explain the diner man's behavior.

I also had no reason to believe that standing around would help us understand it.

So I turned my attention back to what was in front of us.

For a little while, that worked.

I followed Reed's movements and listened to the sound of the engine.

I watched Odom shift his attention between the workbench and the bike.

The room felt more ordinary when I stopped searching it for signs.

The front windows were just windows.

The phone was just a phone.

The canvas bag was something Brix carried with him.

I could acknowledge those details without making them part of a theory.

It was a small correction, but it mattered.

I had started to understand how easily fear could change the way a person saw a familiar place.

Nothing in the shop had to change for the room to feel different.

Sometimes all it took was one piece of information that didn't fit.

Brix's account had done that.

I didn't want to dismiss it.

I didn't want to exaggerate it either.

Those two mistakes were different, but they could lead to the same result.

We would stop paying attention to what had actually been said and start responding to what we imagined.

I didn't want that for us.

I glanced at Reed.

He was still focused on the Shovelhead.

I couldn't know whether he felt the same uncertainty I did, but he hadn't offered a false answer just to quiet the room.

That was something I could respect.

Odom had done the same.

Neither of them had claimed to know why the diner man cared about the motorcycle.

Neither had tried to tell Brix what he must have heard.

They had listened.

Then they had returned to the work.

I was beginning to see that listening did not require an immediate conclusion.

Sometimes it meant holding on to a detail until there was a reason to understand it differently.

Sometimes it meant accepting that a detail might remain unexplained for a while.

The mention of Saturday still bothered me.

It would have been easier if Brix had heard something vague, something that could have belonged to any conversation.

Instead, he remembered a specific deadline.

Saturday was also the day of the memorial ride.

I could not ignore that connection.

But I could stop pretending I knew what it meant.

The two facts existed together.

Their relationship was still uncertain.

I looked at the motorcycle again.

The engine had been running when Brix began talking, and it was still the center of the work we had come to do.

The diner man's interest had changed the way I thought about it.

It had not given me any new knowledge about the machine itself.

That distinction brought me back to where I needed to be.

I could pay attention to the motorcycle.

I could take Brix's warning seriously.

I could remember the words he had heard without adding words of my own.

And I could let Reed and Odom do the same.

Nobody had to solve the whole situation in that moment.

We only had to avoid making it worse by pretending uncertainty was the same thing as understanding.

I stayed close to the workbench.

Odom's phone remained on it.

Brix kept his hand around the canvas bag.

Reed continued working beside the Shovelhead.

The questions were still there.

Saturday was still approaching.

We still did not know what the diner man wanted or what he believed Brix had seen.

I could not change any of that by thinking harder.

So I let the questions remain unanswered while I watched the work.

It wasn't the relief I had wanted.

It was, however, the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Kept My Eyes on the Workbench, Reminding Myself That Brix Had Given Us Facts, Not Answers

I had spent too much of the morning trying to make every detail fit.
