12 – With Saturday Approaching, We Had to Prepare for the Memorial Ride Without Pretending the Questions About the Motorcycle Had Been Answered

Time seemed to move differently once we started counting it.

Before Brix told us about the argument, the hours before Saturday had been something we could plan around.

We had a list of work to finish.

We had a motorcycle that needed attention.

We had a clear reason for wanting everything ready.

Afterward, the same hours felt crowded with questions.

Every task competed with the thought that something might be happening beyond our understanding.

I was tired of that feeling.

I wanted to return to the simple satisfaction of finishing a job.

The Shovelhead gave us a chance to do that.

Reed kept his attention on the machine.

Odom stayed nearby, helping where he could.

I followed their lead and concentrated on the work in front of me.

We didn't need to discuss the diner man every few minutes.

We already knew what Brix had told us.

Repeating it wouldn't change the facts.

That didn't mean we were forgetting the warning.

It meant we were making room for the other responsibilities we still had.

The memorial ride was getting closer.

The motorcycle had to be ready.

Those were things we could actually influence.

I began to appreciate the difference between being alert and being distracted.

Alert meant remembering what Brix had said and not dismissing it.

Distracted meant allowing every unanswered question to pull us away from the work we needed to finish.

I had been doing too much of the second.

I wanted to stop.

Odom seemed to reach the same point.

He looked at the time, then put his phone away.

"We should get this finished."

Reed nodded.

"That's the plan."

The conversation ended there.

No speeches.

No promises.

Just three people returning to the work.

I felt better.

For a while, I could think about the motorcycle without immediately imagining the diner man asking questions about it.

I could look at the Shovelhead as a machine again.

That small change mattered.

It reminded me that uncertainty did not have to control every part of our attention.

We could carry a concern without letting it replace everything else.

I was still uneasy about Saturday.

I couldn't deny that.

The phrase Brix had overheard remained in my mind.

Something was supposed to be found before then.

I still didn't know what the men had been discussing.

I still didn't know whether the argument had any connection to the memorial ride.

And I still didn't know why the diner man had asked what Brix had seen on the motorcycle.

Those were the questions that mattered.

Not every passing noise.

Not every person who walked by the shop.

Not every movement outside the windows.

I had to keep reminding myself of that.

Later, Reed paused beside the workbench.

He looked at me.

"You seem quieter."

I thought about the answer.

"I'm trying to stop guessing."

He gave a small nod.

"Good."

I almost laughed.

It wasn't that easy.

My mind kept trying to finish the story.

It wanted to know why the diner man had asked about the shop.

It wanted to know what the other man had said.

It wanted to know what would happen before Saturday.

But I was beginning to understand that an unfinished story was not an invitation to invent an ending.

We had to wait for facts.

Until then, our responsibility was to deal with what we knew.

Reed returned to the motorcycle.

Odom moved closer to the workbench.

I stayed with them.

The shop felt more familiar than it had earlier.

Not because the questions had disappeared.

Because we had stopped treating them as something we could solve through repetition.

We had already considered the possibilities.

We had already acknowledged the warning.

There was nothing to gain from running through the same conversation again and again.

If something new came to light, we could reconsider what we knew.

Until then, we had work to finish.

I thought about Brix.

I hoped he understood that we had taken him seriously.

I hoped he didn't believe we expected him to provide answers he didn't have.

He had told us about the questions and the argument.

That information might prove important.

It might also turn out to have an explanation we hadn't considered.

Either way, he had done his part by telling us what he remembered.

The rest was not his responsibility alone.

I found that thought comforting.

It made the situation feel a little less like a puzzle we had to solve immediately and a little more like a problem we had to approach carefully.

We could remain aware of the diner man without claiming to know his motives.

We could keep the motorcycle ready without assuming that it contained some hidden answer.

We could prepare for Saturday without pretending that the date meant nothing.

Those ideas were not contradictory.

They were simply difficult to hold together when fear made one possibility seem more likely than the others.

I was learning to live with that difficulty.

The afternoon moved on.

The work continued.

We checked the motorcycle and made progress toward the memorial ride.

Every completed task gave me something solid to hold on to.

The questions remained in the background.

They did not vanish.

But they no longer stopped me from seeing the work directly in front of us.

That felt like progress of its own.

At one point, I stood beside the Shovelhead and listened to the quiet around it.

I remembered how relieved I had been when the engine first ran.

I had thought that sound meant we were nearly finished with the problem.

Now I understood that it meant only what it had always meant.

The motorcycle was running.

That was a real achievement.

It wasn't an answer to the questions Brix had brought us.

It wasn't proof that something was wrong.

It wasn't proof that everything was fine.

It was simply the truth we could establish.

I had spent too much time asking the machine to mean something beyond that.

I stepped back from it.

Reed was nearby, focused on the remaining work.

Odom checked the time once more.

Neither man seemed eager to reopen the conversation about the diner.

I was grateful.

We had not forgotten.

We had simply accepted that we couldn't force an explanation to appear.

Saturday was still approaching.

The memorial ride was still the reason we were preparing the Shovelhead.

The diner man's questions still bothered us.

And the argument about something being found before Saturday remained unexplained.

Those facts could stay where they were while we finished what needed to be done.

For the first time since Brix had spoken, I felt able to concentrate on the immediate task without pretending the larger concern had disappeared.

It wasn't peace.

Not quite.

But it was enough to keep moving.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Tried to Keep My Attention on the Workbench, but Brix’s Words Stayed
