The way he held that bag."

I nodded slowly.

I had noticed those things too.

"But we don't know if that's why," I said.

Odom gave a small, tired smile.

"You're right. We don't."

We both knew how easy it was to start assigning meaning to every detail.

The bag might have been important to Brix for reasons unrelated to the diner.

His glances toward the windows might have reflected fear of the man who had hurt him.

Or they might have meant something else.

We had no basis for choosing among those explanations.

Still, the conversation helped me see how quickly a person could become trapped between wanting to believe someone and wanting more information.

We believed Brix had told us what he remembered.

We wanted to understand why it mattered.

Those were different things.

I had been treating them as if they were the same.

That wasn't fair to him.

Reed stepped away from the motorcycle.

"We don't need him to explain what he doesn't know."

The sentence was simple.

It stayed with me.

Brix had not claimed to understand the argument.

He had not identified the second man.

He had not told us what was supposed to be found.

He had only shared the words he remembered.

We could take those words seriously without asking him to solve the whole thing.

I felt some of my frustration ease.

Not because the situation had become clearer.

Because I had stopped expecting Brix to provide clarity he did not possess.

That was a burden we had placed on him without saying so.

I was glad Reed had noticed it.

The shop settled back into its routine.

We continued with the work.

Odom checked the time.

I kept my attention on the motorcycle.

For a while, we managed to discuss practical things without returning to the diner.

It was a relief.

Then Odom asked whether Brix might remember anything else.

Reed answered before I could.

"If he remembers something, he can tell us. We shouldn't keep pressing him."

Odom nodded.

"Agreed."

That was the right decision.

We had already asked what we needed to ask.

There was no reason to turn the conversation into an interrogation.

I wondered whether Brix had expected that kind of pressure when he first approached us.

Perhaps he had been afraid of being accused of exaggerating.

Perhaps he had worried that we would blame him for bringing trouble to the shop.

I couldn't know.

But I could make sure I didn't contribute to that feeling.

The next time I spoke to him, I would listen before trying to interpret.

I would let him say what he knew.

And I would accept that he might not know anything beyond it.

That seemed obvious when I put it into words.

It had taken me longer than it should have to understand.

The motorcycle remained near the center of the shop.

I glanced at it and remembered the diner man's questions.

The connection was still there.

Brix's experience still mattered.

But it no longer felt as if we needed to force an answer out of him.

We could acknowledge the warning and continue paying attention.

We could remain cautious without demanding that Brix become the person who explained everything.

That was a better way to handle it.

I wished we had understood that from the beginning.

There was still time before Saturday, though not as much as we had first believed.

The memorial ride remained our immediate deadline.

We needed to finish the work and make sure the motorcycle was ready.

Beyond that, we had to wait for information we did not yet have.

I wasn't happy with the arrangement.

But I was beginning to accept it.

As I watched Reed return to the Shovelhead, I thought about the difference between a problem that needed solving and a person who needed to be heard.

Sometimes they were connected.

Sometimes they weren't.

Brix had brought us both.

We had spent most of our attention on the first.

I didn't want to make that mistake again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: With Saturday Approaching, We Had to Prepare for the Memorial Ride Without Pretending the Questions About the Motorcycle Had Been Answered

The more I thought about Brix, the more I wished I had asked him how he felt before he came to us.
