About you. About the bike."

Nobody answered.

The engine continued to make its steady sound, filling the silence without making it feel any less uncomfortable.

I watched Reed.

He had been focused on getting the Shovelhead running.

Now he looked as if he had forgotten the machine was even there.

"What did he want to know about me?" Reed asked.

Brix rubbed one thumb along the edge of his bag.

"He asked if I'd been inside before."

Reed waited.

"He wanted to know if you'd spoken to me."

"And the motorcycle?" Odom asked.

Brix nodded.

"He asked what I'd seen on it."

That was when the mood in the shop changed.

Not dramatically.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody reached for anything.

Odom simply placed his phone on the workbench and left it there.

Reed glanced toward the front door.

I followed his eyes.

There was nothing unusual outside.

A quiet stretch of road.

The ordinary view we had seen a hundred times.

But suddenly, I found myself wondering who else had been looking at our shop.

And why.

Odom broke the silence.

"Why would a man who works at a diner care about our motorcycle?"

Brix shook his head.

"I can't tell you that."

He sounded embarrassed by the answer.

I knew that feeling.

There is a particular kind of shame that comes from knowing something important but not knowing enough to explain it.

People look at you as if you are holding back the truth.

Sometimes you are only holding a piece of it.

Brix looked down at the floor.

"There's more."

Nobody interrupted him.

He glanced toward the windows again.

This time, he kept looking for a few seconds.

Then he told us about the night before the diner man had struck him.

He had been near the back of the building.

The kitchen was behind him, and he had heard voices coming from outside.

The man from the diner had been talking to somebody else.

They weren't having a friendly conversation.

"They were arguing," Brix said.

"About what?" Reed asked.

Brix swallowed.

"Something being found before Saturday."

Saturday.

The word landed harder than it should have.

I looked at the Shovelhead.

The memorial ride was coming up.

Forty-nine hours away.

We had been thinking about time in terms of repairs, preparation, and whether the motorcycle would be ready when it mattered.

Now Saturday meant something else.

Someone had been talking about something being discovered.

Someone had been worried enough to argue about it.

And the man who had hurt Brix had apparently wanted to know what Brix had seen on our motorcycle.

I tried to put those facts together.

They wouldn't fit.

Not yet.

Odom folded his arms.

"Did they say anything else?"

Brix shook his head.

"Not that I could make out."

"You didn't hear a name?"

"No."

"Did you see the other man?"

Brix looked uncomfortable.

"I heard him. I didn't get a good look at him."

Reed stepped away from the motorcycle.

"Why didn't you tell us this earlier?"

The question came out sharper than he probably intended.

Brix lowered his eyes.

I wanted to tell Reed to ease up.

Then I stopped myself.

We were all trying to understand what was happening, and none of us knew how much Brix had been carrying around since that night.

He had already been hurt.

He had already had reason to distrust the man.

And now he was standing in a shop full of strangers, explaining why he thought the trouble might not have ended.

Brix answered quietly.

"I didn't know it mattered."

Reed looked away.

For a second, I thought he was going to argue.

Instead, he looked at the motorcycle again.

That old machine had been the center of our attention for so long that we had stopped seeing it as anything beyond a difficult repair.

We had looked at its parts.

We had listened to its engine.

We had checked the work and tried to make sure everything was right.

But Brix had been asked what he had seen on it.

That was different.

It meant somebody might have been interested in something other than whether it ran.

I felt a knot forming in my stomach.

I didn't know what that meant, and I didn't want to pretend I did.

The trouble with fear is that it can make an ordinary question sound like a threat.

But sometimes a question is a threat.

We had no way of knowing which kind we were dealing with.

Odom moved closer to the workbench.

"Let's take this one thing at a time."

He sounded calm.

I was grateful for that.

"Did the diner man know you were coming here?" he asked Brix.

Brix shook his head.

"I don't think so."

"Did you tell him anything about Reed?"

"No."

"About the bike?"

"No."

Odom nodded slowly.

Then he looked at Reed.

Neither man said what they were thinking.

They didn't need to.

The questions had come from somewhere.

The argument behind the diner had happened for a reason.

And the timing was too close to ignore.

I looked at Brix's canvas bag.

He had been holding it tightly since he arrived.

I wondered whether he was afraid of losing the few things he owned or whether the bag had something to do with what he was telling us.

I didn't ask.

There were already enough questions in the room.

The motorcycle continued running.

Nobody seemed interested in celebrating anymore.

I remembered how relieved I had felt when the engine first came alive.

That relief now seemed foolish.

We had treated the running motorcycle as the end of a problem.

We had been wrong.

The machine might have been ready for Saturday, but we had no idea what else Saturday meant to the people who had been asking questions about it.

Reed finally spoke.

"Nobody touches anything until we understand what's going on."

It wasn't a dramatic announcement.

He didn't raise his voice.

He simply looked at the motorcycle with a different kind of attention.

Odom nodded.

Brix tightened his grip on the bag.

And I stood there listening to the engine, wondering how something we had spent so much time trying to fix could suddenly make the whole shop feel unsafe.

The motorcycle was running.

That should have been good news.

Instead, it was the first thing that made me afraid.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Questions About Reed and the Shovelhead Made Me Wonder Whether We Had Missed Something Important Right in Front of Us

I used to think the worst problems were the ones you could see.
