I help Tiny. I try to do things right."

I sat on the stool beside him.

"You do help us sometimes."

He looked down.

"But what if I can't?"

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"What if you can't do what?"

"Help."

He picked at a loose thread on his sleeve.

"What if I don't know how to do something?"

I took a moment before answering.

"Then we'll show you if we can."

"What if I still can't?"

"Then we'll do it another way."

He looked at me.

"What if I can't help at all?"

I understood then that he wasn't really asking about tools or bolts.

He was asking whether his place in the shop depended on being useful.

I thought about how often adults praised children only when they did something well.

How quickly we could turn a kindness into a bargain without realizing it.

I leaned forward.

"Tommy, you don't have to work for your place here."

He looked at me carefully.

"You don't?"

"No."

"But I help."

"And we're glad when you do."

I pointed toward the chair.

"But you can sit there and do nothing at all, and we'll still be glad you're here."

He didn't answer.

I wanted him to believe me.

I knew I couldn't make him believe it with one sentence.

So I kept talking.

"You don't have to sort bolts. You don't have to draw pictures. You don't have to know anything about motorcycles."

He looked toward the shelf.

"Can I still draw?"

I smiled.

"Of course."

"Can I ask questions?"

"Absolutely."

"Even if I ask the same question?"

"Even then."

He seemed to consider each answer separately.

Finally, he asked, "Can I just sit?"

I nodded.

"You can just sit."

He leaned back against the chair.

His shoulders loosened a little.

I stayed with him until he returned his attention to the rain.

Across the shop, Tank had stopped working.

Tiny was wiping his hands.

Wheels had finally fixed the leak and was putting the container away.

None of them had interrupted.

But I knew they had heard.

Tank came over and crouched beside the chair.

"Let me tell you something, Tommy."

Tommy looked at him.

"I'm not good at every job in this shop."

Tommy's eyebrows rose.

"You're not?"

Tank shook his head.

"Nope. Wheels can do things on a computer that make my head hurt. Tiny can calm down a dog I wouldn't know how to approach. Bear can listen to an engine and tell you what it's thinking."

I laughed.

"Engines don't think."

"Tell that to the one you've been arguing with all morning."

Tommy smiled.

Tank continued.

"We all have things we're good at. We all have things we aren't. That doesn't decide whether we get to be here."

Tommy stared at him.

"Really?"

"Really."

Tiny came over next.

He was holding the clean towel Tommy had used.

"Besides, I don't think anybody here would let you sort bolts all day."

"Why not?" Tommy asked.

"Because then you'd miss lunch."

Wheels joined them.

"And because we'd run out of bolts."

Tommy laughed.

The tension in his face eased.

I felt grateful to my friends for understanding what I had been trying to say.

They hadn't turned it into a lecture.

They had simply made room for the truth.

For the rest of the afternoon, Tommy didn't do much work.

He sat in the chair and drew a picture of Buddy sleeping beside a motorcycle tire.

He watched Tank repair a wire.

He listened to Wheels complain about the rain.

When Tiny asked if he wanted to help put away the rags, Tommy shook his head.

"Not today."

Tiny smiled.

"Then not today."

No one looked disappointed.

No one reminded him that he had helped yesterday.

No one tried to coax him into doing something to earn his welcome.

I watched him notice that.

He seemed to settle more deeply into the chair.

A little before three, the rain stopped.

Water dripped from the roof into a metal bucket near the back wall.

Tommy listened to the steady plinks.

"Does it always sound like that?"

"When the rain is heavy enough," I said.

He tilted his head.

"It sounds like somebody tapping."

"Maybe somebody is."

He looked at me.

"Who?"

I shrugged.

"Could be the rain."

He grinned.

Then he pulled his notebook from his backpack.

He wrote something on a page, shielding the words with his hand.

I didn't ask what it was.

He closed the notebook and put it away.

Helen arrived a little later.

She stood in the doorway, shaking rain from her umbrella.

Tommy went to her.

"I didn't do any work today."

Helen looked confused.

"What?"

"I just sat."

She glanced at me.

I wondered whether she would misunderstand what he meant.

But she crouched in front of him.

"Was that okay?"

Tommy looked at her as if he wasn't sure how to answer.

I kept quiet.

After a moment, Helen touched his shoulder.

"You don't have to do work every time you go somewhere, Tommy."

He looked at her.

"I don't?"

"No."

She glanced toward the old chair.

"You can have an afternoon without accomplishing anything."

Tommy seemed to be thinking hard.

Then he smiled.

"Okay."

Helen stood.

She looked at me.

"He asked me that at home once."

I waited.

"He wanted to know whether I would still love him if he couldn't help me."

Her voice faltered.

"I told him yes. But I don't think I explained it very well."

I thought about Tommy's question in the shop.

"He might need to hear it more than once," I said.

Helen nodded.

"I think you're right."

She took his backpack.

He followed her to the door, then turned around.

"Bye, Bear."

"See you soon, buddy."

He waved to Tank, Tiny, and Wheels.

Each of them waved back.

After they crossed the street, I stood by the doorway for a while.

The rain had left the pavement shining.

The shop smelled of wet concrete and warm metal.

I went to the shelf and looked at the drawings.

The little boy among the motorcycles.

The house beneath the yellow sun.

The shop with the open door.

They were all different pictures of the same child trying to understand where he belonged.

I wondered how many times he had been made to feel that being loved required him to be easy, helpful, or quiet.

I couldn't change whatever had happened before he came to us.

I couldn't speak for every adult in his life.

But I could make sure that the answer in our shop stayed the same.

He was welcome when he helped.

He was welcome when he struggled.

He was welcome when he laughed.

And he was welcome when he had nothing to say.

The chair would still be there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: When Helen Asked If Tommy Could Come Even on the Days He Wasn’t Himself, I Realized Trust Was Growing Between All of Us

Tommy arrived on a rainy Thursday.
