I can't say that and then show up every time I get impatient."

Wheels looked toward the window.

"I wasn't thinking about us being impatient."

"I know."

He rubbed a hand over his face.

"That kid looked happy here."

"He did."

"And he looked like he needed it."

I didn't disagree.

But need was a complicated thing.

A person could need companionship and still need the stability of home.

A child could benefit from a place outside the house without being pulled into a conflict between adults.

If I wanted to help Tommy, I had to remember that the shop wasn't the only part of his life.

Helen was part of it too.

Whether I liked her choices or not, she was the adult responsible for him.

I didn't want to make Tommy feel he had to choose between us.

So we waited.

Around noon, Tiny went outside to put a few tools away.

When he returned, he had a small brown dog following him.

The animal was thin, with one white paw and a patch of fur missing near its ear.

Tiny had been feeding it behind the building for a couple of weeks.

Today, it seemed willing to follow him farther.

"Looks like we have company," Tiny said.

The dog stopped near the entrance and sniffed the floor.

Wheels crouched a few feet away.

"What's his name?"

"He doesn't have one."

"That's sad."

"Maybe he hasn't told us yet."

Tiny set a bowl of water near the wall.

The dog drank cautiously.

I watched him and thought about Tommy.

There was something familiar about the way both of them approached a new place.

Neither came rushing in.

Neither seemed certain the welcome would last.

They watched first.

They tested the ground.

They waited for the people inside to show what they meant.

That afternoon, I took a small walk during my break.

I didn't cross to Helen's house.

I went in the opposite direction, past the hardware store and the little diner where Tank bought coffee.

I needed to clear my head.

I had spent most of my life solving problems that could be laid out on a workbench.

A motorcycle came in with a bad starter.

You checked the connections.

You tested the battery.

You found the faulty part and replaced it.

People weren't like that.

You couldn't open them up and point to the broken piece.

You couldn't tighten a bolt and know everything would hold.

Sometimes you could do everything you thought was right and still make a situation worse.

When I returned, Tank was working at the front bench.

The chair remained empty.

I looked at it, then went to wash my hands.

Near three o'clock, I heard a knock against the open doorframe.

I turned.

Tommy stood there.

His backpack hung from one shoulder.

He was wearing the oversized shoes again, but this time the laces had been tied in uneven knots.

He looked worried.

"Hey, buddy."

He didn't smile right away.

"Can I come in?"

I set down the rag I was holding.

"Of course."

He entered slowly.

I glanced toward the street.

Helen wasn't visible.

"Did your aunt say it was okay to visit?"

Tommy nodded.

"She said I could come for a little while."

Relief moved through me, but I kept my voice calm.

"Then let's make the most of your little while."

He went straight to the old chair.

Before sitting, he checked the shelf behind it.

His drawing was still there.

He smiled.

"You kept it."

"I told you we would."

He sat down and set his backpack beside his feet.

I returned to the bench, but he called my name.

"Bear?"

"Yeah?"

"Did you think I wasn't coming?"

I looked at him.

I could have given him a simple answer.

Instead, I told him the truth in a way a seven-year-old could understand.

"I wondered when I'd see you again."

He studied me.

"Because you wanted me to come?"

"Because we like having you here."

His face softened.

He leaned back in the chair.

For a while, he watched Tank work.

Then he pulled the folded drawing from his backpack.

He had made additions to it.

The four motorcycles had new lines around their wheels.

The figures had faces now.

And beside the little boy, he had drawn a dog with one white paw.

"That's Tiny's dog," he explained.

"Looks like him."

"He needs a name."

Tiny looked over from the storage room.

"That's true."

Tommy tapped his pencil against the page.

"What names do dogs like?"

Wheels laughed.

"I don't think they get to vote."

"Maybe they should," Tommy said.

That made all of us laugh, including Tommy.

He looked pleased that he had made us laugh.

Tiny sat on his heels beside the chair.

"What would you call him?"

Tommy thought for a while.

"Buddy."

Wheels lifted his eyebrows.

"That's a pretty good dog name."

Tommy looked toward the entrance, where the dog sometimes waited.

"Because he's our buddy."

Tiny nodded.

"Then Buddy it is, until he tells us otherwise."

Tommy wrote the name on the drawing.

His letters were uneven, and the final Y stretched down farther than the others.

He held it up for me to see.

I told him it was good work.

He tucked it away again, careful not to bend the paper.

For the next hour, he helped Tiny put away clean rags and watched Wheels check the pressure in a tire.

He asked whether a motorcycle could run without a wheel.

Wheels explained why it couldn't.

Tommy asked whether a person could run without shoes.

Wheels looked down at Tommy's oversized footwear.

"Some people can. I wouldn't recommend it on this floor."

Tommy laughed.

Then he looked at me.

"Do you remember when I came here without shoes?"

"I remember."

"I didn't know if you would let me in."

I stopped wiping the counter.

"Why didn't you know?"

He shrugged.

"I didn't know you."

That answer was fair.

"That's true," I said. "You didn't."

He looked at the door.

"But you did let me in."

"I did."

"Why?"

I thought about the question.

There were a hundred things I could have said.

Because you were lonely.

Because I heard your aunt talking.

Because I thought you needed somebody.

Because I saw you watching us and wondered what you wanted.

But the answer I gave him was simpler.

"Because you knocked, Tommy. And you asked."

He seemed to accept that.

Then he went back to his drawing.

I wondered how many times he had needed something and decided not to ask.

I wondered whether he was beginning to believe that asking didn't always end in disappointment.

That was not something I could measure.

I could only keep showing him.

Before he left, he asked if he could take the drawing home.

I said it was his to do with as he pleased.

He studied the shelf one last time.

"Can I bring it back?"

"Any time."

He folded it carefully and put it in his backpack.

When Helen arrived, she stayed near the doorway.

She looked from Tommy to the chair, then toward the cardboard shelf where the first drawing had been.

"He had a good afternoon," I said.

Helen's expression remained guarded.

"He says he likes coming here."

"He seems to."

She looked at Tommy.

"Did you behave?"

Tommy nodded.

"I helped."

"What did you help with?"

He began explaining the rags, the tire, and the dog named Buddy.

Helen listened, although her eyes occasionally moved toward the street.

When Tommy finished, she adjusted the strap of his backpack.

"Come on. We need to get home."

Tommy looked at me.

"Tomorrow?"

I waited.

Helen let out a tired breath.

"We'll see."

It wasn't the answer Tommy wanted.

It wasn't the answer I wanted either.

But I nodded.

"Have a good evening, buddy."

He waved and followed her outside.

This time, Helen didn't hurry him across the street.

She walked beside him at his pace.

I watched until they reached their front door.

Then I went back to the workbench.

I had no right to decide what Helen should do.

I could not know what she was carrying simply by looking at her tired face.

But I could keep the chair ready.

I could keep the drawing safe.

And whenever Tommy was allowed to come, I could make sure he didn't have to wonder whether he was welcome.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: When Tommy Began Talking About His Mother, I Learned That the Quietest Questions Often Carried the Heaviest Things

The next day, I tried not to watch the window.
