But I'll be glad to see you whenever she's comfortable letting you visit."

Tommy studied my face.

"You're not mad?"

"No, buddy. Why would I be mad?"

He shrugged.

"I don't know."

I understood more than I wanted to.

Some children learned to watch adults carefully.

They learned to study a voice before they asked a question.

They learned that a simple request could change the mood of a whole room.

I didn't know how much of that Tommy had experienced.

I only knew he seemed relieved when I didn't sound angry.

"You're allowed to ask," I told him.

He nodded once.

Then he went back to watching Tank work.

A little after one, a customer came in to pick up a repaired motorcycle.

Tommy moved his feet out of the way while we rolled it toward the door.

The customer glanced at him.

"Your boy?"

The question caught me off guard.

Tommy looked up too.

I could have explained that he wasn't my son.

I could have explained that he lived across the street with his aunt and had only started visiting the shop.

Instead, I answered the part that mattered.

"He's Tommy. He's spending the afternoon with us."

The customer nodded.

"Good to meet you, Tommy."

Tommy gave him a small wave.

When the man left, Tommy looked at me.

"Am I your boy?"

I took a breath.

"You don't have to belong to somebody to be welcome here."

He seemed to think about that for a long time.

Then he nodded, though I wasn't sure he understood all of it.

Maybe I didn't either.

Later, Wheels asked Tommy whether he wanted to help sort some old bolts.

He brought over a shallow plastic tray and set it on a low table.

"We're putting the same sizes together," Wheels explained. "The little ones go here, the bigger ones go there."

Tommy leaned forward.

"How do I know which is which?"

Wheels placed two bolts side by side.

"Look at the heads. See how this one is wider?"

Tommy nodded.

They worked slowly.

Sometimes Tommy picked up the wrong one.

Wheels corrected him without making a fuss.

Sometimes Tommy got it right.

Wheels treated that like the achievement it was.

When the tray was sorted, Tommy looked pleased with himself.

"I did it."

"You sure did," Wheels said.

Tommy glanced at me.

"Can I do it again?"

"There's always something that needs sorting around here."

He laughed.

It was a short laugh, but it came freely.

I found myself listening to it as I returned a wrench to its place.

The sound seemed to brighten the shop without changing anything else.

The same motorcycles stood on the same lifts.

The same oil stains marked the floor.

The old fan still rattled whenever it turned toward the door.

But Tommy's laughter made me notice how quiet the building had been before he started visiting.

I wondered how quiet his house was.

I wondered whether Helen spoke to him during the day or whether she mostly gave instructions and moved on to the next task.

I wondered whether he had anyone to show his drawings to.

Those thoughts troubled me because I knew how little I actually knew.

I didn't want to turn Helen into a villain simply because she struggled with a responsibility she hadn't expected.

I didn't know what her days looked like.

I didn't know what she had given up.

I didn't know how much money she had, how much help she received, or how often she worried about the future.

I had heard the way she spoke about finding a place for Tommy.

That had hurt to hear.

But I also knew grief could make people speak from exhaustion.

It didn't excuse cruelty.

It did mean I needed to listen before deciding I understood the whole story.

Tommy had a home across the street.

For now, he had a chair in our shop.

I wanted those two facts to exist without turning them into a fight between us and Helen.

Near two o'clock, he began looking toward the front window more often.

I knew what that meant.

"Is it time to go?" I asked.

He looked at the clock.

"Maybe."

"Did your aunt tell you when she'd come?"

He shook his head.

I checked the time again.

"We can walk you home."

His expression changed.

"Do I have to?"

The words were quiet.

I pulled a stool closer.

"You do have to go home when it's time. But you don't have to be scared to tell me you don't want to leave."

He stared at his shoes.

"I like it here."

"I know."

"Everybody talks to me."

I didn't answer immediately.

The truth was too plain to need decorating.

I had seen him sit in that chair for hours without anyone demanding anything from him.

I had watched him ask questions and receive answers.

I had watched Tiny bend down to hear him, Tank slow his explanations, and Wheels turn a simple job into something Tommy could help with.

None of us had done anything remarkable.

We had simply paid attention.

I wondered how often a child could go without that before he started believing he didn't deserve it.

"I like having you here too," I said.

Tommy looked up.

"Really?"

"Really."

He smiled, but the smile didn't quite hide his worry.

We waited a little longer.

Then I took my keys from the counter.

"Come on. I'll walk with you."

Tommy put his drawing carefully into his backpack.

He checked the zipper twice before standing.

I held the door open while he stepped outside.

The sun had warmed the pavement, and traffic moved steadily along Riverside Avenue.

We crossed together.

Halfway across, Tommy reached for my hand.

He didn't say anything.

I didn't ask him why.

I simply held it until we reached the other sidewalk.

At Helen's front door, he let go.

I knocked.

Helen opened the door after a few seconds.

Her expression was tired, and a dish towel hung over one shoulder.

"He's back," I said.

"I can see that."

Tommy stood close to my side.

"I had lunch," he told her.

"All right."

"And I sorted bolts."

Helen looked at him.

"You did?"

He nodded quickly.

"Wheels showed me."

For a moment, she seemed unsure what to say.

Then she stepped back to let him enter.

"Come inside, Tommy."

He turned toward me.

"Tomorrow?"

I kept my voice steady.

"If your aunt says it's okay."

He looked at Helen.

She rubbed her forehead.

"We'll talk about it later."

Tommy's shoulders dropped slightly.

I wanted to press her for a clearer answer.

I wanted to tell her what the shop had meant to him.

But she had already opened the door, and Tommy was waiting for her to tell him what came next.

So I nodded.

"Thanks for letting him visit today."

Helen didn't return the thanks.

She didn't slam the door either.

She simply stepped inside with Tommy, and the door closed between us.

I walked back across the street alone.

The shop looked the same when I entered.

But the chair was empty again.

I went over and straightened it.

Then I left it where it was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Helen’s Silence Started to Worry Me, but I Knew That Helping Tommy Meant Respecting the Woman Who Took Him Into Her Home

Tommy stayed until early afternoon.
