Tank said.

Tommy nodded.

It was a tiny exchange.

But I noticed how much care he put into it.

He wanted to do things correctly.

He wanted to know what was expected of him.

I wondered how often he had been corrected for doing something the wrong way.

I wondered whether he had learned to ask permission before touching anything because he was afraid of upsetting somebody.

I couldn't know.

I only knew he was trying very hard to get everything right.

After a while, Tiny brought over a chair.

It was an old wooden chair we kept near the back wall.

One of its legs had been repaired twice.

The seat was scratched, and the paint had worn away along the edges.

It wasn't special.

But Tiny placed it beside the workbench as though it belonged there.

"You can sit here if you like."

Tommy climbed onto the seat.

His feet didn't quite reach the floor.

He looked around the shop again.

For the first time since entering, he seemed unsure what to do next.

I pulled another chair closer and sat beside him.

"You don't have to work," I told him. "You can just hang out."

He looked at me.

"Really?"

"Really."

He seemed to consider that.

Then he leaned back against the chair.

I watched his shoulders loosen.

It was such a small change that somebody else might have missed it.

But I had spent weeks watching him through a window.

I had seen how carefully he held himself.

How often he looked over his shoulder.

How quickly he disappeared when someone moved behind him.

Now he was sitting in our shop, surrounded by men who had made room for him without asking him to prove he deserved it.

And he was beginning to relax.

I felt relieved.

Then I felt ashamed that something so ordinary could make me feel relieved.

A child should have been able to sit in a room without wondering whether he was welcome.

The fact that it seemed important to him told me more than I wanted to know.

We didn't make a big event out of his visit.

Tank went back to the motorcycle.

Tiny returned to his tools.

Wheels started telling a story about a customer who had insisted he could repair an engine with a kitchen knife.

Tommy listened.

Sometimes he smiled.

Sometimes he looked at the motorcycles.

Every so often, he checked to make sure I was still nearby.

I stayed where he could see me.

I didn't know whether he was afraid I would send him away.

I didn't want him to have to find out.

After some time, I asked whether he wanted water.

He nodded.

I brought him a cup.

He held it with both hands and took small sips.

When he finished, he placed it on the bench beside the chair.

"Thank you, Bear."

Hearing my name from him felt strange.

Not unpleasant.

Just unexpected.

I had been a man across the street for so long that I hadn't considered what it would feel like when Tommy began to know me as a person.

I smiled.

"You're welcome."

He looked down at his hands.

Then he asked, "Can I come back?"

I didn't answer too quickly.

I remembered Helen's warning.

Don't make promises to him.

I had told her I wouldn't.

That didn't mean I couldn't offer something honest.

"If it's all right with your aunt, we'd be happy to see you."

Tommy's face changed.

He looked worried.

I wished I could take back the part about his aunt, not because it was wrong, but because I saw what it meant to him.

He didn't know whether she would agree.

He didn't know whether his visit had already caused trouble.

And he didn't know whether the welcome he had found here would still be waiting the next time he needed it.

I leaned forward slightly.

"We like having you here, Tommy."

He studied my face.

Then he nodded.

I hoped he believed me.

A little later, he stood up from the chair.

He looked toward the entrance.

I realized he might be thinking about going home.

I didn't want to hold him there.

I also didn't want him to feel that leaving meant we were glad to see him go.

"You're welcome to stay a little longer," I said. "But you can go whenever you want."

Tommy nodded again.

He stood beside the chair for a few seconds.

Then he looked at the motorcycles one more time.

"Bye, Bear."

"See you, Tommy."

He walked toward the door.

Tiny moved aside to give him room.

Tank raised a hand.

Wheels smiled.

Tommy returned the gestures.

Then he stepped out onto the pavement.

He was still barefoot.

I watched him cross the short distance toward his aunt's house.

I didn't follow him.

I didn't call after him.

I simply watched until he reached the other side.

When he disappeared inside, I turned back toward the shop.

Nobody spoke for a while.

Finally, Wheels broke the silence.

"That little guy's got courage."

Tank nodded.

"More than most of us."

I looked at the old wooden chair beside the workbench.

It was still slightly crooked.

The cup Tommy had used sat on the bench.

Nothing had changed about the shop.

The same tools hung on the wall.

The same motorcycles waited for repairs.

The same men stood around the workbench.

But the room felt different.

A little boy had asked whether he could stay with us.

And we had told him yes.

It wasn't a solution to his grief.

It wasn't a promise about his future.

But it was a beginning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: After Tommy Left, We Couldn’t Return to Our Work Without Thinking About the Little Boy Who Had Asked Us to Let Him Belong

I had expected Tommy to ask about the motorcycles.
