I own the motorcycle shop across the street."

"I know who you are."

Her answer came quickly.

I couldn't tell whether she meant she'd seen me before or had already formed an opinion about me.

Probably both.

I kept my voice calm.

"I wanted to ask you something about Tommy."

Her face tightened.

"What about him?"

I had prepared an explanation.

Somehow, standing in front of her, I couldn't remember a single word of it.

I settled for the truth.

"We've noticed him watching the shop. I thought he might enjoy coming over sometime, if you're comfortable with that."

Helen didn't answer.

I continued before I could lose my nerve.

"We work on motorcycles. The men are decent fellows. He wouldn't have to do anything. He could just sit and watch if that's what he wanted."

She folded her arms.

"He's not like other children."

I had expected something like that.

Still, hearing it said so plainly made me uncomfortable.

"I understand."

"No, you don't."

She wasn't shouting.

That made her words harder to answer.

"You don't know what it takes to look after him. Everything has to be considered. Everything takes longer."

I nodded.

She looked past me toward the street.

"I have work to do. I can't spend all day keeping an eye on him."

I wanted to tell her that nobody had asked her to spend all day at our shop.

I wanted to explain that we weren't offering to take responsibility for Tommy's entire life.

But I stopped myself.

She wasn't speaking to me as a woman who had been offered a kindness.

She was speaking as someone who felt cornered.

Maybe she had been cornered by circumstances long before I knocked on her door.

"I wasn't asking you to change anything," I said. "I just thought he might like some company."

Helen looked at me again.

For a moment, I thought she might agree.

Then she shook her head.

"I'll think about it."

It wasn't a yes.

It wasn't exactly a no, either.

I accepted it.

"All right."

I turned to leave.

Before I reached the sidewalk, she called after me.

"Bear?"

I looked back.

"Don't make promises to him."

I stood still.

"I won't."

She watched me for another moment, then closed the door.

I walked back across Riverside Avenue feeling as though I had accomplished nothing.

But I had knocked.

That counted for something, even if it wasn't enough.

Inside the shop, Tank was waiting beside the workbench.

He took one look at me.

"How'd it go?"

"She needs time."

He nodded.

"Fair."

I set my keys down.

"She thinks we might promise him something we can't deliver."

Tank rubbed his jaw.

"Then don't promise him anything."

"I told her that."

"Good."

He picked up his wrench.

"Now we wait."

I didn't like waiting.

Waiting felt too much like doing nothing.

Still, I knew Tank was right.

We couldn't force Helen to accept help.

We couldn't force Tommy to trust us.

And we couldn't make the grief in that house disappear simply because it hurt to watch.

So we went back to work.

The morning passed.

A customer brought in a motorcycle that wouldn't start.

Tank diagnosed the problem.

Tiny cleaned the workbench.

Wheels spent ten minutes looking for a tool that had been in his pocket the entire time.

Ordinary things.

I tried to let them occupy my mind.

Then, just before noon, I saw Tommy at the window.

He was watching us.

I lifted my hand.

He lifted his.

That small exchange felt different now.

I had spoken to his aunt.

She knew we had noticed him.

Whatever happened next would no longer be a secret hope held between a boy and a group of strangers across the street.

I wondered whether she would tell him about our conversation.

I wondered whether she would allow him to visit.

Most of all, I wondered whether he would still want to come if he knew we had asked.

Tommy remained at the window for several minutes.

Then he disappeared.

I returned to the motorcycle I was repairing.

I had just reached for a socket wrench when I heard a soft knock against the shop's front door.

I looked up.

The door was open.

Tommy stood outside.

Barefoot.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

He was so small against the doorway that my first thought was that he had wandered away without understanding how far he had come.

His feet were bare against the pavement.

His hands hung close to his sides.

He looked from me to the workbenches and then back again.

Nobody spoke.

I set down the wrench.

"Hey, Tommy."

He looked at my face.

Then he glanced toward the motorcycles.

Tank had stopped working.

Tiny stood near the back bench.

Wheels had turned around so quickly that his chair scraped the floor.

All three men were watching the boy.

Not staring.

Just waiting.

Tommy took one small step inside.

Then another.

I stayed where I was.

I didn't want to rush toward him and frighten him.

I didn't want to make his arrival feel like a mistake.

He stopped beside the entrance.

His eyes moved over the tools, the motorcycles, and the men standing quietly around the shop.

Then he looked straight at me.

His mouth opened.

And I realized that all the time we'd spent wondering what Tommy wanted, none of us had prepared ourselves for the possibility that he might finally tell us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Question He Asked Inside My Shop Was So Simple That None of Us Knew How to Answer It at First

I had rehearsed the conversation three times before I even left the shop.
