I paid it."

He flinched slightly.

I regretted the sharpness of my tone, but I did not withdraw the truth.

"I know," he said. "That's what I mean."

He explained that he had become accustomed to the idea that I would step in when something important came up.

He had not consciously decided that I should be responsible for everything.

He had simply allowed the arrangement to continue because it meant he did not have to face the full cost of what he could not afford.

I listened.

It was not a flattering explanation.

It was, however, more honest than the ones he had offered before.

"I think I let myself believe that because you could cover it, you weren't being hurt by it," he said.

I looked down at the invoice.

That was the part I had never managed to explain.

I could afford to make many of those payments.

That did not mean they had no cost.

Every time I paid something without discussing it, I gave up the chance to decide whether I wanted to keep doing so.

My money had not been the only thing involved.

My time, attention, and sense of responsibility had become part of the arrangement too.

"I wasn't always struggling to pay the bills," I said. "But I was struggling with the fact that I didn't know how to stop being responsible for them."

Travis sat back.

"I didn't realize it had gotten that bad."

"I didn't tell you how bad it had become."

We looked at each other.

For once, I did not use that admission to excuse his choices.

And I did not use his choices to excuse mine.

We had both allowed the silence to continue.

We had not carried the same burden, and I would not pretend we had.

But the silence itself had become part of the problem.

Kendra brought us back to the proposed contribution.

She asked Travis to explain how he had arrived at the amount and whether he believed he could maintain it.

He said he had tried to choose a figure that would not leave him unable to manage his other responsibilities.

He also acknowledged that he needed to review his finances regularly.

I asked what he would do if an unexpected expense made a payment difficult.

"I would tell you before the payment was missed," he said.

I looked at him for a moment.

That was the kind of answer I had wanted years earlier.

But I had learned not to treat a good answer as proof of a changed habit.

"That needs to be part of the written arrangement," I said.

"Agreed."

Kendra noted it.

We discussed how to handle repairs and other property expenses.

I did not want Travis to assume that every problem would automatically become my responsibility.

He did not want to agree to something he could not afford.

Those concerns were not impossible to reconcile, but they required more work.

Kendra explained that we should not finalize terms until the relevant parts of the existing agreement had been reviewed.

We agreed to continue working through the details.

At one point, Travis asked me whether I would consider reducing what he owed, if the review showed that certain expenses had not been clearly assigned to him.

The question made me pause.

I had not yet decided what I thought was fair.

I also knew that the figures in the folder did not all mean the same thing.

Some were payments I had made under the arrangement.

Others were repairs I had chosen to cover because the house needed them.

I did not want to turn every expense into a debt simply because I was finally angry enough to count it.

"I'll consider what the records and agreement show," I said. "But I'm not going to decide that today."

He accepted that.

I was relieved he did not press me.

The meeting continued until we had identified the questions that remained unresolved.

Kendra made a list.

We would need to review the original agreement's payment terms.

We would need to determine how the expenses I had covered should be treated.

We would need to assess Travis's proposed contribution and decide whether it could form part of a workable arrangement.

We would also need to understand the implications of the restriction involving Brittany's age.

Nothing had been finalized.

Yet I left the office feeling that we had accomplished something.

Not because Travis had agreed to everything I wanted.

He had not.

Not because I had decided what I would do.

I had not.

We had finally stopped pretending that one person's willingness to help could replace a plan.

On the drive home, I thought about the first payment I had covered.

I remembered how easily I had explained it away.

A temporary problem.

A bad month.

A delay.

I had believed that if I stayed patient, Travis would find his footing and the arrangement would return to what we had intended.

Perhaps he had believed that too.

But a temporary solution can become permanent when nobody is willing to admit that it has changed.

At home, I placed the folder on the table.

I added a copy of Travis's revised figures.

Then I wrote down the points we still needed to settle.

I did not add a total at the bottom.

Not yet.

I wanted the numbers reviewed properly before I treated them as an answer.

That evening, I had lunch with Brittany.

We talked about ordinary things first.

She told me about work.

I asked about a project she had been considering.

She teased me about the lemon cake I had promised to make.

For a while, the house was not part of the conversation.

Then she asked how things were going.

"We're making progress," I said. "But we haven't reached a final agreement."

"Does Dad understand what you need?"

"I think he's beginning to understand."

"Do you believe him?"

I considered the question.

"I believe he's trying to look at the situation differently. Whether that turns into a lasting change is something we'll have to see."

Brittany nodded.

She did not ask me to promise that everything would work out.

I was grateful for that.

When lunch ended, she hugged me before leaving.

I held her a little longer than usual.

I was still her mother.

I still wanted her to feel safe.

But I no longer believed that I had to guarantee a particular outcome to prove that I loved her.

Sometimes love meant doing the work required to make a decision responsibly.

Sometimes it meant admitting that a situation had become unsustainable.

And sometimes it meant allowing another adult to experience the consequences of choices I could no longer keep absorbing.

I drove home with the folder waiting on the kitchen table.

The proposed contribution was still only a proposal.

The past was still unresolved.

But the conversation had become more honest.

For the first time, that honesty felt like something we could build on rather than something we had to survive.

*END PART 18**

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Had Spent Years Hoping the House Would Become a Simple Family Matter Again, but I Was Finally Ready to Accept That a Fair Resolution Might Require Difficult Choices

Travis arrived at Kendra's office with a new set of figures.
