he said.

I sat down across from him.

"All right."

He slid his papers toward Kendra.

They contained a rough outline of his current expenses and what he believed he could contribute going forward.

The numbers were not a complete proposal.

They were a beginning.

Kendra reviewed them carefully.

She asked questions about the amounts, the timing, and the expenses Travis had included.

He answered as best he could.

Sometimes he had a figure.

Sometimes he admitted he needed to check.

I listened without interrupting.

It was difficult not to react whenever a number seemed too low or a cost appeared to have been overlooked.

But I reminded myself that this was the first time he had brought his own accounting to the discussion.

I wanted to see whether he was willing to keep working.

After Kendra finished reviewing the pages, she set them beside the original agreement.

"This gives us something to examine," she said. "But it doesn't yet resolve the full arrangement."

Travis nodded.

"I know."

He turned toward me.

"I can't pay back everything you've covered at once."

I had expected him to say that.

"I wasn't expecting you to arrive with a check for every expense," I said.

"Then what do you expect?"

The question was not hostile, but it was direct.

I appreciated that.

"I expect us to stop acting as if the arrangement is working when it isn't."

He nodded slowly.

"I agree with that."

"I expect you to understand that the house has continued to cost money even when you couldn't make the agreed payments."

"I understand that now."

I looked at him.

"Did you not understand it before?"

He rubbed his hands together.

"I understood that you were helping. I didn't understand how much of the responsibility had shifted to you."

I wanted to tell him that the difference should not have required a folder.

Instead, I waited.

He continued.

"I kept thinking that if I could get the business steady again, I'd make things right. Every time I got close, something else happened."

"I know you had problems," I said. "I never expected you to control everything that happened to you."

He looked relieved for a moment.

Then I continued.

"But I did expect you to tell me when the agreement wasn't working."

His expression changed.

"I should have."

It was a small sentence.

It did not repair anything.

But it was the first time he had said those words without following them with an explanation.

I let them stand.

Kendra asked us to separate three questions.

First, what the original agreement actually required.

Second, what payments and expenses had been made by each of us.

Third, what arrangements might be possible going forward.

She explained that the third question could not be answered responsibly until the first two had been reviewed.

I liked that approach.

It kept us from leaping toward a solution simply because we were tired of the problem.

I was tired.

I wanted the house to stop occupying so much space in my mind.

I wanted to open a bill without wondering whether it would become another responsibility I would quietly take on.

I wanted to speak to Travis without having to guess whether he would make a payment.

But wanting an ending did not mean any ending would be fair.

"We need to know what the agreement allows," I said. "And we need to know what we're actually agreeing to now."

Travis nodded.

"I don't want this hanging over us forever."

"Neither do I."

He looked at the records again.

"I can make a regular contribution. I need to be realistic about the amount."

"Then be realistic," I said. "But make it something we can both understand and review."

He agreed.

Kendra suggested that any proposal should identify the amount, the payment dates, and how property expenses would be handled.

She also said we should not assume that a new informal promise would replace the original agreement.

That mattered to me.

I had relied on informal assurances for too long.

I did not want another conversation to become a memory that each of us interpreted differently.

We spent the next part of the meeting reviewing the expenses.

The roof had required immediate attention.

The furnace had been necessary.

The taxes and insurance had to be paid whether or not we were getting along.

Some maintenance costs were easier to categorize than others.

Kendra marked the items that needed further documentation.

I felt an unexpected sadness as I watched her work.

These were ordinary household expenses.

They were not supposed to be the center of a family relationship.

I had never wanted to keep score with Travis.

I had wanted him to have a home for Brittany.

I had wanted him to become steady enough that the help could end.

Now I was learning that refusing to keep records had not prevented scorekeeping.

It had only left me keeping score in my head.

That was a worse way to live.

When we reached the end of the current list, Travis leaned back.

"I know you didn't have to do all this," he said.

I looked at him.

"No. I didn't."

"I am grateful."

I believed he meant it.

But gratitude was not a payment plan.

It was not an agreement about future expenses.

It was not an answer to the question of how we would move forward.

"Thank you," I said. "I appreciate hearing that. But we still need to work out the arrangement."

He nodded.

For a moment, I felt the old impulse to soften the conversation.

I wanted to tell him that we could take our time.

I wanted to assure him that I would help if he needed it.

I wanted to make the room feel comfortable again.

Instead, I asked the question I had written in my notebook.

"What can you commit to without assuming I'll cover the difference?"

He looked down at his papers.

He studied them for a while.

Then he gave a figure.

It was lower than I had hoped.

It was also more specific than anything he had offered before.

Kendra wrote it down as a proposed contribution, not a final agreement.

We discussed whether it included property taxes, insurance, and repairs.

It did not answer every question.

We still needed to review the original terms and determine how the proposed arrangement would fit within them.

But the conversation had changed.

For the first time, we were discussing what Travis could actually do instead of what he hoped he might do someday.

I did not tell him the proposal was enough.

I did not tell him it was unacceptable.

I said we needed to review it against the records and the agreement.

He agreed.

When the meeting ended, Kendra gathered the papers.

She reminded us that nothing should be treated as final until the terms were properly reviewed and documented.

I thanked her.

Travis walked with me toward the exit.

"I know this has been hard on you," he said.

"It has."

"I wish I'd handled it differently."

"So do I."

He seemed to wait for me to add something.

Perhaps he expected me to reassure him that the past no longer mattered.

I could not say that.

The past mattered because it had shaped the situation we were trying to resolve.

But I did not need to punish him with it.

"I want us to find a fair way forward," I said. "I just can't keep doing things the old way."

"I understand."

This time, I did not ask whether he meant it.

I would know more from what he did next.

Outside, the afternoon was bright.

I carried the folder to my car and placed it beside the notebook.

The proposed contribution was only a number on a page.

It was not yet a solution.

Still, it gave us something concrete to examine.

At home, I opened the notebook to a fresh page.

I wrote down the proposed amount and the questions that remained.

Then I added a reminder to ask Kendra about the restriction involving Brittany's age and any consequences it might have for the property's future.

I did not try to answer those questions myself.

For once, I was willing to admit that wanting a clear answer did not mean I already had one.

I closed the notebook.

I had spent years hoping that if I kept the house stable long enough, the rest would eventually fall into place.

Now I understood that stability was not the same as resolution.

The house could remain standing while the arrangement underneath it failed.

And the only way to change that was to stop pretending the structure was sound.

*END PART 15**

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Had Once Believed That Keeping the House Safe Was the Same as Keeping Our Family Together, but the Agreement Was Asking Us to Face a Different Truth

The date Kendra had written on the paper came closer than I expected.
