I didn't agree to take over every expense indefinitely without discussing it."

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of the top page.

"I was trying to get back on my feet."

"I know."

The words came easily because I had believed that from the beginning.

His financial difficulties had been real.

The failed investments had caused problems.

His damaged credit had made the purchase difficult.

I had not forgotten any of that.

But the years had continued to pass.

And the arrangement had remained unchanged on paper while I carried more and more of its financial weight.

"I wasn't trying to make things difficult for you," I said. "I wanted Brittany to have a stable place with you."

Travis nodded, but his expression remained guarded.

"I appreciate that."

I looked at him.

For years, I had imagined that hearing those words would make everything feel better.

It didn't.

Appreciation was not a payment plan.

It wasn't a decision about the future.

And it didn't tell me whether he understood what needed to change.

I asked him what he thought a reasonable way forward would look like.

He said he needed time to review the records and consider his finances.

I agreed that he should have time.

I wasn't asking him to produce an answer in the middle of the meeting.

But I also made it clear that I couldn't continue treating the expenses as something I would automatically cover without any discussion.

Travis looked uncomfortable.

I felt uncomfortable, too.

For the first time, neither of us could pretend that the problem was simply a late payment or an unexpected repair.

The issue was the arrangement itself.

We agreed that he would review the documents before we discussed the next steps.

Nothing was settled that day.

I had hoped the conversation would leave me feeling lighter.

Instead, I felt tired.

But the folder remained on the table.

The agreement had been read.

The payment history had been seen.

And the years I had spent paying quietly were no longer invisible.

That mattered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Travis Asked for More Time, I Had to Decide Whether I Was Willing to Turn Another Promise Into Years of Waiting

I brought the folder to the meeting.
