I said.

"Keep it factual."

She nodded.

That was what I wanted.

The document wasn't meant to humiliate him.

It wasn't meant to suggest that I had never made a mistake.

It was meant to establish the difference between what we had agreed to and what had happened.

The distinction was important.

If we were going to address the arrangement, we needed to begin with the truth rather than with the explanations we had used to avoid it.

I looked at the payment history.

Seven years, three months, and twelve days.

The number still bothered me.

But it no longer felt like proof that I had been foolish to help.

It felt like proof that I had waited too long to speak.

There was a difference.

I could accept that I had acted out of love for my daughter.

I could accept that I had wanted to help Travis recover from a difficult period.

I could even accept that, at the beginning, the arrangement had seemed like the best solution available.

What I could not accept anymore was the idea that those original intentions required me to remain silent forever.

I closed the folder.

Then I set it on the table between Kendra and me.

For years, I had carried the responsibility alone because I thought doing so would protect everyone else.

Now I was prepared to let the people involved see the situation clearly.

I wasn't demanding an immediate answer.

I wasn't announcing a punishment.

I was asking for the arrangement to be addressed honestly.

That was all.

And for the first time in seven years, I understood that asking for honesty was not the same as abandoning my daughter.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Had Prepared Every Receipt and Every Payment Record, but I Still Couldn’t Predict What Travis Would Say When He Saw Them

When the next conversation with Travis came around, I wanted to approach it differently.
