7 – The House Still Needed a Roof, Insurance, and Taxes, but I Could No Longer Let Those Bills Decide Everything for Me

The next week, I found myself thinking about the house in a way I hadn't before.

I had always thought about what it needed.

The mortgage had to be paid.

The insurance had to remain current.

Repairs had to be handled before small problems became expensive ones.

I rarely thought about the arrangement itself.

That was the part I had avoided.

A house was a physical thing.

It had walls, windows, plumbing, and a roof.

When something broke, the solution seemed obvious.

Someone had to fix it.

I had become that person.

The agreement, however, was not a roof that needed replacing.

It was a set of responsibilities between two people.

Those responsibilities required conversations, decisions, and follow-through.

I couldn't repair the arrangement by paying another invoice.

I had tried that approach for years.

It had kept the property in good condition, but it hadn't solved the problem between Travis and me.

I understood that now.

Kendra completed the organized payment history and gave me time to review it.

I checked the dates against the statements.

I looked at the mortgage payments first.

Then the taxes.

Then the insurance and maintenance expenses.

Everything was recorded.

I didn't need to guess how much I had contributed.

I could see it.

That clarity made me uncomfortable, but I preferred it to the vague sense of obligation I had carried for so long.

I had spent years telling myself that the expenses were manageable.

They were.

But the issue had never been whether I could afford them.

It was whether I had agreed to take responsibility for them indefinitely.

I had not.

I turned to the original agreement again.

The language was familiar.

I had read it before signing.

I had read it when the first payment was missed.

I had read it again when the roof needed replacing.

But each time, I had used the document to reassure myself that the property was protected.

I had not used it to guide a serious conversation about the arrangement.

That was a mistake.

The restrictions had a purpose.

They were there to prevent the house from being sold, refinanced, or transferred without my written consent while Brittany was still a minor.

They did not erase the other obligations.

They did not make the missing payments irrelevant.

And they did not require me to remain silent.

I called Kendra and asked her to help me prepare a written account of the situation that Travis could review.

I wanted the document to be factual.

No accusations.

No emotional language.

Just the agreement, the payment history, and the expenses I had covered.

I also wanted a clear statement that the arrangement needed to be addressed rather than allowed to continue without discussion.

Kendra understood.

She prepared the information carefully and made sure the records were consistent.

When I reviewed the pages, I noticed how different they looked from the notes I had made for myself over the years.

My old records were scattered.

Some were kept in the property folder.

Others were saved with company documents.

I had always been able to find what I needed, but the information had never been gathered into one clear picture.

Now it was.

The arrangement had become visible.

That mattered because I could no longer hide behind the idea that each expense was separate.

The roof wasn't separate from the furnace.

The furnace wasn't separate from the mortgage.

The mortgage wasn't separate from the original agreement.

They were all part of the same situation.

And the situation needed attention.

I didn't want to turn the house into a weapon against Travis.

I didn't want to use the property to interfere with Brittany's relationship with him.

I wanted the arrangement to be handled according to the terms we had agreed upon, with the responsibilities made clear.

That was a reasonable thing to ask.

Still, I worried about how Travis would receive the documents.

He might feel that I was questioning his ability to provide for Brittany.

He might feel embarrassed by the payment history.

He might interpret my decision to address the problem as a withdrawal of support.

I couldn't control how he felt.

I could control whether I spoke honestly.

That distinction had taken me years to learn.

One evening, I sat at the kitchen table with the folder beside me.

I could hear the refrigerator running.

A small stack of unopened mail sat near the fruit bowl.

Nothing in the room looked different from any other evening.

But I felt different.

For the first time, I wasn't looking at the papers and wondering how I could keep everything going without upsetting anyone.

I was asking what a fair arrangement would require from both of us.

That question did not have an easy answer.

The agreement had been created during a difficult period in Travis's life.

My circumstances had been different.

I had the financial resources to help, and I had wanted to use them to give Brittany stability.

There was nothing wrong with that.

But help could not become an obligation simply because I had once offered it willingly.

I could acknowledge Travis's difficulties without agreeing to carry every consequence of them.

I could care about Brittany without keeping her father insulated from every financial responsibility.

And I could recognize my own mistakes without accepting responsibility for every decision Travis had made.

Those truths could exist together.

I placed the documents in the folder.

Then I set it beside my keys so I wouldn't forget to bring it to the next meeting.

The folder was no longer something I wanted to hide in my office.

It was something I was prepared to discuss.

That was progress.

Not a solution.

But progress.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Had Finally Stopped Making
