6 – I Had Never Asked Travis to Explain the Missing Payments, and Now I Needed to Find Out What He Believed Our Agreement Meant

I waited until I could speak to Travis without Brittany being present.

I didn't want her hearing the conversation from another room.

I didn't want her wondering whether she was responsible for the tension between us.

This was an issue between adults.

It needed to stay that way.

When I called, Travis answered after several rings.

He sounded distracted.

I asked whether he had time to discuss the house.

There was a pause.

Then he said he could talk.

I began carefully.

I reminded him that the property had been purchased through my holding company because his financial situation had made it difficult for him to obtain the financing himself.

He knew that already.

I reminded him that we had agreed he would make payments.

He knew that, too.

Then I told him I had reviewed the records.

The mortgage payments had been coming from me.

The property taxes and insurance had been paid.

The repairs had been covered.

And the arrangement had continued for years without us properly discussing what was happening.

Travis didn't answer immediately.

I could hear him breathing on the other end of the line.

Finally, he said he knew things hadn't gone exactly as planned.

I waited for him to say more.

He didn't.

I asked when he expected to resume making the agreed payments.

He said his finances had been difficult.

I believed that might be true.

But it wasn't an answer to my question.

I had heard explanations for years.

What I needed now was a clear understanding of what he intended to do.

I asked whether he had a plan for the missed payments.

He said he would need time to work through the numbers.

I told him I understood that.

Then I explained that I couldn't continue treating the property expenses as an open-ended responsibility.

The words felt strange coming out of my mouth.

Not because they were complicated.

Because I had spent so long refusing to say them.

Travis became quieter.

I couldn't tell whether he was angry or embarrassed.

Perhaps he felt both.

He reminded me that Brittany needed a place to stay when she visited him.

I told him I agreed.

That had been the reason I helped him purchase the house in the first place.

I wanted Brittany to have a stable home with her father.

That intention had not changed.

But I explained that the arrangement had to be handled honestly.

Keeping the house available for Brittany could not mean that I automatically paid every bill without discussion.

There was another pause.

Then Travis said he had assumed we would work things out.

I looked at the folder on my desk.

For a moment, I couldn't find a response.

I had assumed that, too.

The difference was that I had spent years working things out by myself.

I had made the payments.

I had arranged the repairs.

I had kept the records.

I had taken responsibility for the problems before they could become larger.

I told him that we had never agreed I would carry the entire financial burden indefinitely.

He didn't argue with that statement.

But he didn't offer a solution, either.

We ended the call without resolving the matter.

I sat quietly after hanging up.

I had expected to feel relieved.

Instead, I felt unsettled.

The conversation had not been hostile.

Nobody had shouted.

Nobody had threatened anyone.

And yet, it had changed something.

I had finally said aloud what I had spent years trying not to think about.

I couldn't continue the same arrangement simply because changing it might be uncomfortable.

A few days later, Kendra reviewed the records with me again.

The payment history was organized.

The repair expenses were listed.

The original agreement remained at the front of the folder.

I asked her to help me prepare a clear account of the arrangement as it stood.

I wanted the terms and the financial history laid out without emotion or accusation.

There was no need to exaggerate anything.

The facts were enough.

Travis had agreed to make payments.

The payments had stopped.

I had covered the expenses.

The agreement contained restrictions on selling, refinancing, or transferring the property without my written consent while Brittany was still a minor.

Those restrictions mattered.

They had been included to protect the original purpose of the arrangement.

I wanted to be certain that any next step respected the agreement rather than relying on assumptions.

Kendra worked through the paperwork.

I watched her place each document into its proper section.

For years, I had kept the records because I thought being organized would help me manage the burden.

Now the same records were helping me understand what needed to change.

That was a small but important difference.

I also began thinking about how to speak with Brittany if she ever asked why the adults were discussing the house.

I didn't want to tell her that her father had failed her.

That would be unfair and unnecessary.

I didn't want to pretend I had done everything perfectly, either.

I had made the decision to help.

I had continued paying.

I had avoided the conversation.

Those were my choices.

If Brittany eventually needed an explanation, she deserved one that didn't turn either parent into a villain.

For now, I decided not to involve her.

She didn't need to know every detail while we were still trying to establish a practical path forward.

I needed to give Travis the opportunity to respond to the financial records and the terms we had originally agreed upon.

I also needed to stop treating his discomfort as a reason to abandon my own concerns.

The next time we spoke, I intended to focus on the agreement and the property.

Not on the years of frustration.

Not on the truck.

Not on every repair I had paid for.

Those things were part of the history, but they couldn't replace the question that needed answering.

What was Travis prepared to do now?

I wrote that question on a note beside the folder.

It was plain.

It was direct.

And for the first time, I wasn't planning to answer it for him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The House Still Needed a Roof, Insurance, and
