I said.

She nodded.

"Then we should separate what the agreement says from what has actually happened."

That sounded simple.

It wasn't.

The agreement described an arrangement in which Travis made payments toward the property.

The records described years in which I had covered the expenses.

Those two things could not be treated as if they were the same.

I asked Kendra to review the documents carefully and identify the obligations that remained outstanding.

I also wanted a clear record of the payments I had made.

Not an estimate.

Not a rough calculation.

I wanted every mortgage payment, tax bill, insurance premium, and repair expense organized by date.

Kendra wrote down the instructions.

She didn't tell me what I ought to do about Travis.

She didn't need to.

For the first time, I wasn't asking someone to help me find another way to keep everything running quietly.

I was asking for the truth to be put in order.

That afternoon, I looked through the records again.

The roof invoice was there.

So was the furnace repair.

I remembered the calls that had accompanied each expense.

Travis had explained the problem.

I had listened.

Then I had paid.

I had never asked him to provide a repayment schedule for the money I advanced.

I had never insisted that we revisit the original agreement.

I had allowed each emergency to become a reason not to discuss the larger issue.

That had to end.

I wasn't ready to tell Brittany everything.

She was my daughter, not a mediator.

She shouldn't have to sit between her parents while we sorted out a financial arrangement that belonged to us.

But keeping her out of the conflict was different from pretending there was no conflict.

I needed to remember that distinction.

I placed the repair invoices back into the folder.

The papers no longer looked like a record of my generosity.

They looked like a record of decisions I had made without asking whether they were sustainable.

That was difficult to admit.

It was also useful.

Because once I stopped telling myself that every payment had been unavoidable, I could begin deciding what should happen next.

I left the office with the folder under my arm.

For years, I had carried the financial burden of the house.

Now I was carrying the paperwork that showed exactly how that burden had grown.

I didn't know how Travis would respond when I finally raised the issue.

But I knew I couldn't continue paying indefinitely while pretending the original arrangement still worked.

That was the first decision I made without immediately looking for a way to soften it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Had Never Asked Travis to Explain the Missing Payments, and Now I Needed to Find Out What He Believed Our Agreement Meant

The folder stayed on my desk that night.
