Frightened. A little sad."

"That sounds like a lot to carry at once."

"It is."

She laughed softly.

"But I think it's the right choice for me."

I leaned back against the sofa.

"Then I'm happy for you."

There was a pause.

"You are?"

"Of course I am."

"I thought you might be worried about me moving farther away."

"I am worried about you moving farther away."

Stephanie went quiet.

I continued before she could misunderstand.

"But being worried doesn't mean I want you to stay. I want you to have the life you want, even when it makes me miss you."

Her voice softened.

"Thank you, Mom."

"When do you leave?"

"Not for another six weeks. I have to finish a few projects and find somewhere to live."

"Have you looked at apartments?"

"Not yet. I wanted to tell you first."

"I'm glad you did."

She laughed.

"I have a list of things I need to do, and I don't know where to start."

"Would you like help making a plan?"

"Yes, please."

We spent the next half hour talking about practical matters.

She would need to arrange the move, review her new contract, and decide what furniture to take.

She also wanted to visit the city again before signing a lease.

I wrote down the tasks as she spoke.

Then I stopped.

"Stephanie?"

"Yes?"

"I want to make sure I'm helping in the way you need."

She was quiet for a moment.

"Can you help me compare the apartments after I visit?"

"Absolutely."

"And can you let me make the final decision?"

I smiled.

"That was always the plan."

"No, it wasn't."

Her answer was gentle, but honest.

I sat very still.

She was right.

When Stephanie was younger, I often gave advice before she had finished explaining the problem.

I would point out risks, offer alternatives, and tell her what I thought she should do.

I had called it guidance.

Sometimes it had been.

Other times, I had simply been uncomfortable watching her face uncertainty.

"I'll do my best," I said.

"That's all I'm asking."

After we hung up, I walked into the kitchen.

Walt's mug was still beside the sink.

I picked it up and washed it.

Then I dried it and placed it in the cupboard.

I stood there for a moment, surprised by how ordinary the action felt.

For months, I had kept the mug where I could see it.

It had become a small way of keeping Walt close.

But I didn't need to leave it beside the sink to remember him.

I could put it away and still miss him.

I could keep the mug without keeping every ritual that had grown around my grief.

That evening, I called Danny.

"Your sister has accepted the job."

He sounded pleased.

"That's great. She's been talking about it for weeks."

"She's moving in six weeks."

"Then we'll have to help her pack."

I smiled.

"She may not want us to take over."

"We can ask."

I liked that answer.

It showed that he had been listening.

The following weekend, Stephanie came over with a notebook and several apartment listings.

We spread the papers across the kitchen table.

She had visited the city and narrowed her choices to three places.

One was close to work but expensive.

Another was farther away but had more room.

The third was smaller, with a balcony overlooking a park.

I listened as she described each apartment.

When she finished, I found myself wanting to tell her which one I preferred.

The apartment near the park sounded peaceful.

The expensive one seemed impractical.

The larger one was farther from her workplace.

I had opinions about all three.

But I kept them to myself.

"Which one feels right to you?" I asked.

Stephanie studied the photographs.

"The one with the balcony."

"Why?"

"Because I can imagine coming home there. I can see myself reading outside on a Sunday morning."

She smiled.

"I know it isn't the most practical choice, but I think I'd be happy there."

I nodded.

"Then let's look at the numbers."

We reviewed the rent, utilities, travel costs, and other expenses.

The apartment was affordable, though she would need to be careful with her spending during the first few months.

She made notes in the margin.

I watched her work.

She didn't need me to tell her what to do.

She needed someone to sit beside her while she considered the consequences.

When we finished, she closed the notebook.

"I think I'll apply for it."

"That sounds like a good next step."

She smiled.

"You didn't tell me what to choose."

"I was trying very hard not to."

She laughed.

"I noticed."

Then her expression became thoughtful.

"Do you think Dad would have supported this?"

I looked at the photograph of the three children that still sat on the shelf.

"I think he would have wanted you to succeed."

"That's not quite the same thing."

"No," I said. "It isn't."

I took a moment before answering.

"Your father might have worried about the move. He might have told you to consider every risk. He might even have tried to persuade you to stay."

Stephanie nodded.

"But he also wanted us to be able to manage our own lives."

"I believe he did."

She looked down at the notebook.

"I wish he'd told us that more often."

"So do I."

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then Stephanie reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"I'm glad we're talking about these things now."

"Me too."

The next few weeks passed quickly.

Stephanie applied for the apartment and was accepted.

Michael helped her compare moving companies.

Danny offered to take a day off work to help carry boxes.

Jenna began collecting packing supplies from friends.

Nobody insisted on making every decision for Stephanie.

When she asked for advice, we gave it.

When she said she wanted to think, we let her.

I found that I could be happy for her without pretending I wouldn't miss her.

I began making plans of my own.

A friend invited me to a weekly book group.

I accepted.

Another friend asked whether I wanted to visit a nearby town for the day.

I said yes.

I also started taking short walks in the mornings.

At first, I felt guilty leaving the house when I could have been sorting Walt's belongings.

Then I reminded myself that there was no deadline for grief.

The study could wait.

The papers were safe.

And I was allowed to live while I missed my husband.

One afternoon, Stephanie called to tell me she had signed the lease.

I congratulated her.

Then she said, "I'm scared."

I sat down at the kitchen table.

"Tell me about it."

She talked about starting a new job, living in an unfamiliar place, and being away from the people she knew.

I listened until she had said everything she needed to say.

Then I asked, "Do you still want to go?"

"Yes."

"Then you can be scared and still go."

She laughed softly.

"That's what I was hoping you'd say."

"I learned it from you."

After we hung up, I looked out the kitchen window.

The tree beside the fence had grown another small branch.

Walt would have noticed it.

He would have measured it against the previous year and declared that it was growing faster than expected.

I missed him.

I also felt proud of Stephanie.

Both feelings sat together inside me without canceling each other out.

For the first time, I understood that letting my children grow away from me did not mean losing them.

It meant trusting that the love we had built could survive changes I could not control.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: On the Day We Helped Stephanie Move, I Finally Stopped Measuring Our Family by How Often We Could Keep Everyone in One Place

Stephanie called on Thursday afternoon.
