We're still operating. The employees are being paid, and the bills are covered."

He rubbed his palms together.

"But the last year has been harder than I've admitted."

I kept my voice calm.

"How much harder?"

He gave me a tired smile.

"I knew you'd ask that."

"Would you rather I didn't?"

"No."

He looked toward the window.

"We lost two major clients. One of the projects we expected to carry us through the summer was delayed. I've been using savings to cover the gaps."

I thought about the bank receipt in Walt's folder.

I thought about the notes beside the dates.

"Does Jenna know?"

"She knows the business has been slow. She doesn't know how worried I am."

"Why not?"

"Because I keep telling myself I'll fix it before she has to worry."

I looked at my son.

"How long have you been telling yourself that?"

He gave a small, embarrassed laugh.

"Months."

I felt a familiar sadness.

Not because Michael had financial problems.

Every family faced uncertainty at one time or another.

It was the fact that he believed he had to conceal his fear until he could present a solution.

"Your father did that," I said.

Michael nodded.

"I know."

"He thought he was protecting us."

"I know that, too."

He looked at me.

"But I don't want to become him in that way."

The words were quiet.

They carried more weight than any accusation could have.

I reached across the table and touched his hand.

"Then let Jenna see what you're facing."

"What if she thinks I can't manage?"

"She may be worried. She may be upset that you didn't tell her sooner. But that isn't the same as thinking you're a failure."

Michael looked unconvinced.

I understood why.

He had spent most of his life measuring himself by how well he could manage.

The thought of being seen struggling felt more frightening than the struggle itself.

"When your father was alive," I said, "I used to think that if he was worried, I should make things easier for him by not asking questions."

Michael listened.

"I thought I was being supportive. But sometimes he needed me to ask. Sometimes he needed to tell me that he was afraid."

I squeezed his hand.

"You don't have to wait until everything is fixed before you talk to your wife."

Michael lowered his head.

"I wish Dad had understood that."

"Perhaps he understood it at the end."

"Maybe."

He looked at the folder.

"But understanding something and doing it are two different things."

I couldn't disagree.

We sat quietly until Michael finally picked up his phone.

He stared at the screen.

Then he set it down again.

"I should call Jenna."

"Would you like me to leave you alone?"

"No. Not yet."

He took a breath.

"I think I need to practice saying it out loud first."

I smiled.

"All right."

He looked at me.

"What should I say?"

I thought about giving him a perfect sentence.

Then I realized that was exactly what he didn't need.

"Tell her what you just told me."

"That sounds too simple."

"It is simple. That doesn't make it easy."

He nodded.

We sat together for another few minutes.

Then he called Jenna.

She answered quickly.

"Hi. Is everything okay?"

"Yes," Michael said. "I mean, nothing has happened. I just need to talk to you about something."

There was a pause.

"All right."

"I haven't been completely honest about how worried I am about the business."

I looked down at the table to give him some privacy, even though I was sitting only a few feet away.

Michael explained the lost clients and the delayed project.

He admitted that he had been using savings to cover expenses.

He told her he had been afraid she would worry.

He also told her that he had realized hiding the problem was making him more anxious, not less.

Jenna didn't interrupt.

When he finished, she asked a few practical questions.

How much money was involved?

Which clients had left?

What payments were expected over the next few months?

Michael answered as clearly as he could.

Then he fell silent.

I could see him waiting for her reaction.

Finally, Jenna spoke.

"I'm worried," she said. "Of course I am."

Michael closed his eyes briefly.

"But I'm more upset that you thought you had to carry this alone."

He opened his eyes.

"I didn't want you to think I was failing."

"Michael, we're married. We're supposed to face things together."

He swallowed.

"I know."

"Do you?"

Her question was gentle, but it made him sit straighter.

"I think I'm learning."

Jenna let out a breath.

"We'll look at the numbers tonight. We can figure out what needs to change."

Michael nodded even though she couldn't see him.

"Thank you."

"And next time, please tell me before you spend months worrying by yourself."

"I will."

When he ended the call, he sat very still.

I didn't ask whether everything was all right.

I knew it wasn't all right yet.

There would be bills to review, choices to make, and perhaps some difficult changes.

But Michael had taken the first step.

He had let another person see the problem before he had solved it.

"How do you feel?" I asked.

"Terrified."

I laughed softly.

He looked at me, then laughed too.

"But also relieved," he added.

I reached for the coffee pot.

"Both can be true."

He watched me pour a fresh cup.

"That's what you told me about Dad's letter."

"It applies to more than one thing."

He took the cup.

"I wish I'd told you sooner."

"Me too."

He looked surprised.

I smiled.

"Not because I think I could have fixed your business. I couldn't. But I would have liked to know what was happening in your life."

Michael nodded.

"I understand."

I thought about the years when he had called only to tell me good news.

A promotion.

A successful contract.

A family holiday.

When things went badly, his calls became shorter.

I had assumed he was busy.

Sometimes he probably was.

Other times, he may have been protecting the picture he wanted me to have of him.

I wondered how many times I had done the same thing to my own children.

After a while, Michael stood and carried the cups to the sink.

"I should go home."

"Will you come by again?"

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"Not just because of the papers."

I smiled.

"I'd like that."

He hugged me before leaving.

It was not a quick, distracted hug.

He held me for a few seconds, then stepped back.

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you, too."

After he left, I sat at the kitchen table and looked at Walt's mug.

For years, I had thought that love meant making life easier for the people around me.

I had tried not to burden my children with my sadness.

They had tried not to burden me with theirs.

Walt had tried to protect us from worries he thought we couldn't handle.

We had all been trying to be kind.

Yet our kindness had sometimes left us alone.

I washed the cups and dried them carefully.

Then I put Walt's mug beside the sink.

I wasn't ready to put it away.

But I no longer felt that keeping it there meant I was refusing to move forward.

It was simply a mug.

It was also a memory.

And I was learning that I could hold on to the memory without holding on to every habit that had made our lives harder.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: When Stephanie Asked Me to Help Her Make a Difficult Decision, I Realized How Often I Had Confused Advice With Love

After lunch, the others began preparing to leave.
