I wanted to."

She placed them on the counter and looked at the folder.

"Is that the note?"

I nodded.

She took off her coat and sat at the kitchen table.

"Did you sleep?"

"Better than I expected."

"That's good."

I poured her coffee.

For a few minutes, we talked about ordinary things.

She told me about a problem at work and asked whether the garden needed attention.

I told her the little tree beside the fence had grown taller than Walt had predicted.

Then she looked at me.

"Mom, I'm glad we're doing this."

"So am I."

"I don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering what everyone is thinking."

I sat opposite her.

"Neither do I."

The doorbell rang again.

Danny arrived with Noah in his arms.

Kayla had stayed home with the other children because one of them had woken with a cold.

Noah was wearing a blue jacket that looked too large for him.

He reached toward me as soon as Danny stepped inside.

I took him and kissed the top of his head.

"Look at you," I whispered. "You're getting so big."

Danny hung his coat over the back of a chair.

"Kayla says she'll come by later if the boys are feeling better."

"Tell her not to worry about us."

"I will."

He looked at the table.

"Did you find something else?"

I pointed to the folder.

"Something your father wrote."

Danny pulled out a chair.

I placed the note in the center of the table.

Stephanie read it first.

Her lips moved slightly as she followed the lines.

Then she passed it to Danny.

He read it more slowly.

When he finished, he stared at the paper for a long moment.

"That's exactly what he did to me," he said.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"When I needed help, he told me I had to learn to stand on my own. I believed him because I thought that was what being an adult meant."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I spent years thinking that if I couldn't handle something myself, I was letting everyone down."

Stephanie reached across the table.

"Danny, you never let us down."

"I know that now."

He looked at the note again.

"But I didn't know it then."

I wanted to tell him that his father had meant well.

The words came to my lips out of habit.

Then I stopped.

Danny wasn't asking me to defend Walt.

He was telling me how he had felt.

So I listened.

After a while, Stephanie spoke.

"I think Dad believed he was preparing us for life."

"He probably did," I said.

"But he made it hard for us to admit when life was too much."

I nodded.

"Yes. I think he did."

The admission seemed to surprise her.

Perhaps she had expected me to explain away the note.

Perhaps I had trained her to expect that.

I reached for my coffee.

"Your father was a good man in many ways. But he wasn't always good at telling us what he was afraid of."

Danny looked at me.

"What do you think he was afraid of?"

I considered the question.

"Losing control, perhaps. Watching one of you struggle and not knowing how to fix it. Being unable to give you the answers he thought a father should have."

"That sounds like Dad," Stephanie said.

"He always wanted to be the person who knew what to do."

Danny smiled faintly.

"Even when he didn't."

"Especially then."

We laughed, but the laughter didn't erase the sadness.

It simply gave us a little room to breathe.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Michael arrived with Jenna a few minutes later.

He carried a paper bag containing more coffee and a box of envelopes.

"I brought supplies," he announced.

"For what?" Stephanie asked.

"Making copies of everything. I thought we'd need somewhere to keep the originals safe."

He set the bag on the counter and joined us.

I handed him the note.

He read it without speaking.

When he finished, he folded the paper carefully along its existing crease.

"He wrote this before he died?"

"Yes," I said.

Michael looked toward the study.

"Then he knew he needed to change something."

"I think so."

"Why didn't he?"

Nobody answered.

Michael placed the note on the table.

"I keep thinking about the letter he gave me."

He looked at his brother and sister.

"I was angry when I read it because I thought he was telling me what to do one last time. I thought he was trying to manage my life from beyond the grave."

"What did he actually say?" Stephanie asked.

Michael hesitated.

Then he took a breath.

"He wrote about the way I always acted as if I had everything under control. He said he had mistaken my pride for confidence when I was young, and that he might have helped create the problem."

I looked at him.

"Did he say anything else?"

"He said he was sorry for the times he had made it harder for me to ask for help."

Michael's voice became quieter.

"He also said that I didn't have to prove I was a good son by never needing anything."

Jenna reached for his hand.

Michael held it.

"I didn't know what to do with that," he admitted. "Part of me wanted to believe him. Another part wanted to ask why it took him so long to say it."

I understood.

An apology could arrive at the right moment and still be years too late.

It could be sincere and still leave questions behind.

"You can feel both things," I told him.

He looked at me.

"What?"

"You can be glad he apologized and still be hurt that he waited."

Michael nodded slowly.

"I think that's what I've been trying to understand."

Danny leaned forward.

"Maybe that's why we're here."

We all looked at him.

"Not to decide whether Dad was good or bad. Not to pretend the past didn't hurt. Just to figure out what we want to do differently."

Stephanie smiled.

"I'd like that."

"So would I," I said.

Michael glanced at the photograph I had placed beside the note.

It showed the three children in the backyard.

He picked it up.

"We were so young."

"You were always arguing over that baseball glove," I said.

"I thought Danny had taken it."

Danny laughed.

"You accused me of stealing it when I hadn't even touched it."

"You were sitting right beside it."

"I was four years old."

"Exactly. A suspicious age."

For a moment, we laughed like the family in the photograph.

Then Michael put the picture down.

"I want to keep this."

"Of course."

"Not the original, if you'd rather have it. I can make a copy."

I shook my head.

"You can have the original. I'll keep the copy."

He looked surprised.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

It was only a photograph.

But handing it to him felt like an acknowledgment that the memories belonged to all of us.

Walt hadn't been the only person who had loved that afternoon in the backyard.

We had been there, too.

We had all lived the same years from different places.

Perhaps that was why we remembered them differently.

I gathered the note and placed it back inside the folder.

"We should make copies of everything," I said. "Then each of you can keep what matters to you."

Michael opened the box of envelopes.

"Already prepared."

Stephanie shook her head.

"Of course you did."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you brought envelopes to a family conversation."

"And now we have somewhere to put the papers."

Danny laughed.

For the first time, Michael laughed with him without trying to prove a point.

We spent the next hour sorting the documents.

Michael organized the copies.

Stephanie wrote dates on separate sheets.

Danny checked each page against the original.

I watched them work and thought about the note.

Walt had wanted to make sure none of us felt alone.

He had tried to do that through private arrangements, careful records, and letters written before he died.

But perhaps the most useful thing he had left us was not a document.

It was the chance to sit together and admit what had been difficult.

When the last page had been copied, Michael placed the originals in a fresh envelope.

He wrote the date on the front.

Then he handed it to me.

"Keep this somewhere safe, Mom."

I took it.

"I will."

Outside, the rain had stopped.

A thin line of sunlight appeared on the kitchen floor.

Noah had fallen asleep against Danny's shoulder.

Stephanie was gathering the empty cups.

Jenna was helping Michael pack the papers.

For a moment, I stood still and took in the room.

Nothing had been solved completely.

We still didn't know everything Walt had intended.

But we were no longer treating the questions as something each of us had to carry alone.

And that felt like a beginning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When Michael Finally Admitted What He Had Been Hiding From His Own Family, I Understood Why His Father’s Letter Had Hurt Him So Much

The next morning, I woke to the sound of rain against the kitchen window.
