I said.

Michael nodded.

"Neither do I."

"Then we have to remember the good things without pretending he never made mistakes."

Stephanie reached for the photograph.

She studied it carefully.

"He always wanted us to get along."

"He did," I said.

Danny looked at the letters.

"Maybe that's why he wrote them separately."

I considered that.

It was possible.

Walt had known that his children had become different adults.

He had known that one message would not necessarily reach all three of them in the same way.

Still, I reminded myself that possibility wasn't proof.

We couldn't turn a guess into a fact simply because it sounded comforting.

Michael seemed to be thinking along the same lines.

"We shouldn't decide what Dad meant before we've understood what he actually wrote."

Danny nodded.

"Agreed."

For a while, we read our letters again.

We stopped at passages that troubled us.

We asked questions.

We admitted when we didn't know the answers.

At one point, Michael began to speak sharply.

Then he stopped himself.

"Sorry," he said. "I'm trying to do this differently."

Danny gave him a small nod.

"Me too."

It was a simple exchange.

No one applauded.

No one announced that our family had changed forever.

But I knew it mattered.

I had spent years hoping my children would understand one another without needing to be told how.

Now I was learning that understanding required work.

It required patience.

It required the willingness to hear something uncomfortable without immediately defending yourself.

And it required accepting that another person might have a reason for feeling the way they did, even when you didn't agree with them.

When we finished reading, Danny gathered the letters carefully.

He didn't put them away.

He left them on the table beside the photograph.

I watched his hands.

"Do you think we'll ever understand everything?" I asked.

Danny looked at me.

"Maybe not everything."

I waited.

"But we can stop pretending we already know."

I felt my eyes sting.

For so long, I had believed that being a good mother meant holding everything together.

I thought I had to make peace between my children, protect them from difficult truths, and keep the family moving forward even when I was hurting.

I had confused silence with harmony.

I had confused sacrifice with love.

And I had sometimes mistaken being needed for being understood.

I couldn't change the years behind us.

But I could stop repeating the same mistakes.

"I want us to keep talking," I said.

Michael nodded.

"So do I."

Stephanie reached across the table and took my hand.

Danny placed his hand over ours.

For a moment, we sat that way.

Three children and their mother.

Four people trying to understand a man who was no longer there to explain himself.

The folding table wobbled slightly when Danny shifted his chair.

He reached down and adjusted one of its legs.

The small movement made me smile.

Even in a difficult moment, he had noticed something that needed fixing.

I thought of all the times he had done the same thing in our house.

A loose handle.

A squeaky door.

A chair that needed tightening.

He had never made a performance of helping.

He simply saw a problem and tried to make it better.

I wondered how often I had overlooked those small acts because I had been too busy praising the children for their larger achievements.

Michael had built a successful career.

Stephanie had created a comfortable home.

Danny had built a quieter life.

I had been proud of all three.

But I was beginning to understand that the qualities that mattered most were not always the ones people noticed first.

As the afternoon drew to a close, Michael offered to drive me home.

I accepted.

Stephanie hugged Danny before leaving.

She told Kayla she would call during the week.

There were no grand promises.

Just small plans that sounded as though they might actually happen.

When Michael and I reached my house, he carried my handbag inside.

He noticed Walt's mug on the kitchen shelf.

"Have you thought about putting some of Dad's things away?"

I looked at the mug.

"Sometimes."

He nodded.

"You don't have to do it all at once."

I turned toward him.

It was a kind thing to say.

Not a solution.

Not an answer to every question.

Just a little understanding offered without being asked for.

"Thank you, Michael."

He kissed my forehead before leaving.

I watched his car pull away, then returned to the kitchen.

The house was quiet again.

But the quiet felt different from the silence that had surrounded me during the first weeks after Walt's death.

I was still grieving.

I was still frightened about the future.

And I still had questions about the letters.

None of those things had disappeared.

Yet I no longer felt that I had to face every one of them alone.

I stood beside the kitchen table and looked at the empty chair where Walt used to sit.

"I wish you had told me more," I whispered.

There was no answer.

Of course there wasn't.

I turned off the kitchen light and left his mug on the shelf.

Tomorrow, there would be more questions.

There might be arguments.

There would certainly be moments when one of us misunderstood another.

But for the first time since my husband's death, I believed we might be able to face those things honestly.

Not because we had suddenly become a perfect family.

Because we had finally begun to admit that we weren't.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Next Morning, I Asked My Children to Tell Me What They Had Found in Their Father’s Letters

By the end of the week, we had agreed to meet again at Danny's house.
