I said. "I'm not sure what they mean."

He opened the folder and began reading.

Stephanie leaned closer.

Danny remained beside the table, waiting for them to finish.

I watched their faces.

There was no sudden revelation.

No one gasped.

No one announced that everything now made sense.

The pages offered less information than I had hoped.

But they confirmed that Walt had been thinking about something long before his final illness.

Michael looked up.

"Why didn't you find this earlier?"

I felt the question land like a slap.

"I was going through the documents I understood first."

He seemed ready to say something else.

Then he stopped.

Perhaps he noticed my expression.

Perhaps he realized how unfair the question sounded.

I didn't know.

I was tired of guessing what my children were thinking.

Danny took the folder and examined the note again.

"These dates matter," he said.

Stephanie looked at him.

"How?"

"They tell us this wasn't something Dad started doing because he knew he was dying."

I nodded.

That was what had troubled me, too.

Whatever Walt had been planning, he had apparently been considering it for some time.

Michael returned to the couch.

"Could the letters explain the rest?"

"Maybe," Danny said.

"Then why aren't we reading them together?"

Danny looked at him.

"Because we haven't even agreed on what we've read so far."

Michael rubbed his forehead.

For a moment, I saw the boy he had once been.

The boy who became frustrated when a problem couldn't be solved immediately.

The boy who wanted adults to provide clear answers and disliked being told that some things took time.

He had grown into a capable man.

But some habits stayed with us longer than we realized.

Stephanie folded her hands.

"I think we should each explain what our letters said."

I looked at Danny.

He considered the suggestion.

"Only what we're comfortable sharing."

Michael nodded.

"Fine."

He unfolded his letter.

I noticed that he had brought it with him, carefully tucked into a folder of his own.

He read through it silently before beginning to speak.

His explanation was cautious.

He did not read every word aloud.

He described the general message and admitted that parts of it had surprised him.

When he finished, Stephanie took her letter from her handbag.

She spoke more slowly.

She seemed uncertain about how much to reveal, and I didn't blame her.

These were letters from their father.

They were personal.

Whatever Walt had written, each of them had a right to process it in their own way.

I listened without interrupting.

Then it was Danny's turn.

He looked at the red-sealed envelope.

"I think we need to be careful about assuming we know what Dad meant."

Michael leaned back.

"That's not an answer."

"No," Danny replied. "It's a reason to slow down."

The exchange might have become an argument.

Instead, Stephanie spoke before Michael could continue.

"Maybe we're doing what we always do."

We all looked at her.

She seemed surprised by her own words.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

She stared at the letter in her hands.

"We keep trying to prove that our interpretation is right. We don't stop to consider why Dad might have wanted us to hear something different."

The room grew quiet.

I thought about the three envelopes.

Two were ordinary.

One was sealed with red wax.

Even before we had read them, Walt had made a distinction.

He had not treated his children as though they were interchangeable.

Perhaps he knew each of them needed something different.

Or perhaps he simply understood that they would not respond to the same words in the same way.

I couldn't know for certain.

But Stephanie's point made sense.

Michael looked down at his letter.

"I didn't say I was right."

"You didn't have to," Stephanie answered.

He looked at her sharply.

She held his gaze.

Then, unexpectedly, he let out a tired breath.

"All right."

It wasn't an apology.

But it was a beginning.

We spent the next hour discussing what we knew and what we didn't.

We did not solve everything.

We did not suddenly become the kind of family that agreed on every difficult subject.

Michael still wanted clear answers.

Stephanie still worried about what the letters might mean.

Danny continued to insist that we take our time.

And I found myself caught between wanting the truth and being afraid of what it might change.

At one point, Michael asked whether Walt had ever spoken to me about his plans for the family.

I told him what I remembered.

I described the conversations about the house and the questions Walt had asked about my future.

I told them he had wanted me to be all right after he was gone.

I also admitted that I had sometimes sensed he was holding something back.

Stephanie looked troubled.

"Do you think he didn't trust us?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know."

It was the hardest answer I had given all morning.

For years, I would have rushed to reassure her.

I would have said that her father trusted all of us and that everything would eventually work out.

But I had promised myself I would stop offering certainty when I didn't have it.

"I think your father believed he was doing what he needed to do," I continued. "That doesn't mean he always knew the best way to do it."

Danny nodded.

Michael said nothing.

For a while, we sat with that thought.

Then Kayla came into the room and asked whether anyone wanted lunch.

The ordinary question broke the tension.

Danny helped her carry plates to the table.

Michael offered to bring the drinks.

Stephanie moved the children's toys away from the chairs.

I watched them working together.

It wasn't a grand gesture.

Nobody made a speech about family.

They simply helped because there was something to do.

For a few minutes, I saw the family I remembered.

Not the family I had imagined we would always be.

The real one.

Complicated.

Imperfect.

Still capable of small kindnesses.

After lunch, Michael stood beside me while I put my coat on.

"Mom?"

I turned.

He looked uncomfortable.

"I know I wasn't very helpful when you called."

I waited.

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"I didn't know what to say."

It wasn't everything I had hoped to hear.

But it was honest enough to matter.

"I was scared, Michael."

He looked down.

"I know."

I wanted him to understand that the silence afterward had hurt.

I also knew that making him feel guilty would not necessarily make him more caring.

So I told him the truth.

"I didn't need you to have all the answers. I needed you to care that I was frightened."

He swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

This time, he looked directly at me.

I reached up and touched his cheek.

He was no longer the little boy who used to run into my arms after falling on the playground.

He was a grown man with a life of his own.

But he was still my son.

And I still loved him.

"I accept your apology," I said.

I meant it.

That didn't erase what had happened.

It simply meant I was willing to let him try again.

As I left Danny's house, I felt something shift inside me.

We still had unanswered questions about Walt's letters.

We still didn't know why he had prepared them the way he had.

But my children had begun to speak to one another without immediately turning every disagreement into a contest.

For now, that was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Stephanie Finally Told Me What Had Frightened Her About Father’s Letter, and I Saw How Easily Silence Had Been Mistaken for Indifference

I called Danny the following morning.
