5 – The Morning After Our Family Gathering, I Realized My Husband Had Left Behind Questions None of Us Could Answer

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the three envelopes on Danny's folding table.

I kept thinking about the way Michael had looked at his letter, and how Stephanie had gone quiet after reading hers.

Most of all, I thought about Danny.

He had asked whether Walt had ever kept things from us.

I had answered honestly.

But the question stayed with me long after I returned home.

The next morning, I made coffee and took my usual seat at the kitchen table.

Walt's mug was still on the shelf.

I took it down without thinking, then stood there holding it.

For a moment, I almost called his name.

Old habits.

Forty years of marriage didn't disappear just because a funeral had taken place.

I put the mug back.

Then I sat down with my own coffee and tried to remember the last time Walt had seemed completely at ease.

I couldn't.

Even before he became seriously ill, there had been evenings when he sat quietly in his study after dinner.

Sometimes I would bring him a cup of tea.

Sometimes he would thank me without looking up.

When I asked what he was working on, he would tell me it was nothing important.

I had believed him.

Now those evenings seemed different.

I remembered one in particular, perhaps two years before he died.

I had gone into his study looking for a document we needed for an appointment.

His desk was covered in papers.

When I asked him what he was doing, he gathered them into a folder and closed it.

"Just sorting out a few things."

I had laughed.

"You've been sorting out a few things for half the evening."

He smiled at me.

"Some things take time."

I had kissed his cheek and left him alone.

At the time, it seemed like an ordinary exchange between a husband and wife.

Now I wondered what he had been sorting through.

I didn't want to turn every memory into evidence of a secret.

That would have been unfair to Walt.

But I could no longer ignore the possibility that he had been preparing for something he hadn't told me about.

My telephone rang just after breakfast.

It was Danny.

"How are you feeling this morning, Mom?"

I looked at the untouched toast on my plate.

"All right."

He waited.

I sighed.

"Not particularly good, if you want the truth."

"That's what I wanted."

His answer made me smile despite myself.

Danny had always preferred an uncomfortable truth to a comfortable lie.

He asked whether I had eaten.

I told him I was working on it.

Then he asked if I could come over later.

I hesitated.

"Is something wrong?"

"No. I just want to talk about Dad's letter."

I looked toward the hallway.

"Did you read it again?"

"Several times."

"What did you make of it?"

He paused.

"I'd rather talk when you're here."

I agreed to come that afternoon.

After we hung up, I tried to finish my breakfast.

I couldn't.

The letter had become something I thought about constantly, even though I still hadn't read it.

I wondered what Walt had written to Danny that he hadn't written to the other two.

I wondered why he had sealed it with red wax.

And I wondered why he had instructed Danny to read it alone.

Perhaps it was something personal.

Perhaps it concerned an old disagreement between father and son.

Perhaps it was something that would make more sense once the other letters had been discussed.

I had no answers.

I was beginning to understand how much of my life had been built around trusting that the answers would eventually come.

That afternoon, Danny opened the door before I had finished knocking.

He looked tired.

"Come in, Mom."

Kayla was in the kitchen preparing something for the children.

She greeted me warmly and asked whether I wanted tea.

I accepted.

The house smelled faintly of toast and laundry detergent.

Noah was playing on the floor with a set of wooden blocks.

For a few minutes, I watched him stack them into a crooked tower.

When it fell, he laughed.

I laughed, too.

It was the first time in days that I had laughed without feeling guilty afterward.

Danny noticed.

"You needed that."

"I suppose I did."

He led me to the kitchen table.

His letter lay beside a glass of water.

The red wax had been placed on a small piece of paper rather than thrown away.

I looked at it.

"You kept the seal."

Danny followed my gaze.

"I don't know why. It felt wrong to throw it away."

I understood that feeling.

After Walt's death, I had kept the smallest things.

A receipt from a hardware store.

An old shopping list.

A piece of paper with his handwriting on it.

None of those objects had much value.

But I wasn't ready to let them go.

Danny sat opposite me.

"I've been thinking about what Dad wanted."

"So have I."

"I don't think he expected us to understand everything immediately."

I folded my hands on the table.

"Then what did he expect?"

Danny looked down at the letter.

"I think he expected us to pay attention."

I waited for him to explain.

He didn't rush.

That was one of the things I loved about my youngest son.

He could sit with a difficult thought without trying to force it into a neat answer.

Finally, he said he wanted to speak with Michael and Stephanie again.

Not to argue.

Not to compare letters.

He wanted us to read what we had been given carefully and work out what we actually knew.

I asked whether his letter had told him something specific.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Some of it is personal, Mom."

I nodded.

He had every right to keep parts of it private.

"I won't ask you to share anything you aren't ready to share."

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

"Thank you."

We sat together for a while.

Then I told him about the evenings I remembered in Walt's study.

I described the papers, the closed folder, and the way my husband had always insisted he was handling things.

Danny listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he looked toward the window.

"Maybe he thought he was protecting you."

"Maybe."

"That doesn't mean it was the right thing to do."

I felt a small ache in my chest.

For years, I had defended Walt's habit of keeping his worries to himself.

I had called it responsibility.

I had called it love.

I had rarely considered what it cost the people who were left outside those worries.

"You're right," I said.

Danny looked surprised.

I almost laughed.

"Don't look so shocked. Your mother can admit when she's wrong."

He smiled.

Then his expression grew serious again.

"I don't want us to make the same mistake."

Neither did I.

Before I left, Danny asked me to bring any papers I had found among Walt's belongings.

I told him I would look through them.

I didn't promise that I would find anything useful.

But for the first time since my husband died, I felt that I had a reason to keep searching beyond the practical questions of bills and household expenses.

There might be something in those papers that helped us understand why he had prepared the letters.

And if there wasn't, at least I would know I had tried.

When I returned home, I went straight to Walt's study.

I opened the door and stood in the middle of the room.

His chair remained behind the desk.

The books on the shelves were arranged exactly as he had left them.

I pulled open the top drawer.

Pens.

Old receipts.

A notepad with several unfinished lists.

Nothing unusual.

The second drawer contained folders, most of them labeled in Walt's careful handwriting.

I worked through them slowly.

Insurance documents.

Household records.

Tax papers.

Correspondence that had accumulated over the years.

I placed each folder on the desk after examining it.

By early evening, the surface was covered.

I was tired and my back hurt.

Still, I continued.

Then I found a thin folder tucked beneath a stack of ordinary household documents.

It had no label.

Inside were several sheets of paper that appeared to have been sorted and then put away in a hurry.

I couldn't understand why they had been kept separate from the rest.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

Neither explained anything about the letters.

I was about to close the folder when I noticed Walt's handwriting near the bottom of one page.

It was a short note.

Nothing dramatic.

Just a reminder to himself that something needed attention.

But the date was from well before he became seriously ill.

I sat down.

Walt had been thinking about these matters long before the final months of his life.

That much was clear.

I gathered the pages into the folder and placed it on the desk.

I wasn't ready to draw conclusions.

But I knew I would bring it to Danny.

For the first time, I had something concrete to show him.

Not an answer.

A place to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: While I Searched Through the Papers My Husband Had Left Behind, My Children Began Facing Questions They Had Avoided for Years

I barely slept that night.
