he asked me.

"I believe so."

"Did he give them to you?"

I shook my head.

"No. He told me that there were things I needed to take care of after he was gone, but he didn't explain everything."

Danny looked down at the letter.

"Did he tell you what was in mine?"

"No."

He studied my face for a moment.

Then he nodded, as though he had accepted my answer.

I was grateful.

There was nothing worse than being asked to explain something you didn't understand yourself.

Michael leaned forward.

"Are you going to tell us what it says?"

Danny didn't answer immediately.

He read the page to the end.

Then he folded it along its original creases.

"I need a minute."

Michael looked as though he wanted to object.

Jenna touched his arm again.

This time, he stayed quiet.

Danny stood and walked into the kitchen.

I watched him set the letter on the counter.

He poured himself a glass of water, though he didn't drink it.

He simply stood there with one hand resting on the edge of the counter.

I knew that posture.

Walt had stood that way when something troubled him and he was trying to decide how to speak about it.

For a moment, I could almost imagine my husband in that small kitchen.

The thought made my chest ache.

I rose and walked over to Danny.

"Sweetheart?"

He looked at me.

"I'm all right, Mom."

I knew better than to believe that answer simply because he had offered it.

But I also knew that pressing him would not make it easier.

"Whatever your father wrote, you don't have to carry it alone."

Danny looked down at the water glass.

"I know."

He was quiet for another moment.

Then he asked a question that surprised me.

"Did you ever feel like Dad was keeping something from us?"

I considered giving him the answer a wife was supposed to give.

I could have told him that Walt had always been honest with me.

I could have insisted that there were no secrets between us.

But that would not have been true.

"There were times when I knew he was worried about something," I said. "He didn't always tell me what it was."

Danny nodded slowly.

"Did you ask him?"

"Sometimes."

"What did he say?"

I looked toward the living room.

"Usually, he said he was handling it."

Danny let out a quiet breath.

"That sounds like him."

It did.

Walt had believed that protecting people meant keeping certain burdens to himself.

I had admired that quality when we were young.

I had even defended it when the children complained that their father wouldn't explain his decisions.

Now I wondered how much we had all misunderstood.

Perhaps Walt had been trying to protect us.

Perhaps he had simply been afraid.

Sometimes those two things looked the same from the outside.

Danny finally picked up his glass and took a drink.

Then he returned to the living room.

He sat down beside me, holding the letter in both hands.

Michael immediately looked at him.

"Well?"

Danny glanced at the page.

"I don't think we should rush through this."

Michael gave a short laugh.

"Why not? We've already spent the evening reading letters."

Danny met his brother's eyes.

"Because Dad clearly wanted us to pay attention."

That stopped Michael for a moment.

I looked at my oldest son and saw something I hadn't noticed earlier.

He was nervous.

Not merely impatient.

Nervous.

His fingers kept moving against the edge of his own letter.

Every few seconds, he glanced down at it as though the words might change if he looked again.

Stephanie noticed, too.

She looked at him but said nothing.

Danny turned toward me.

"Mom, I need to ask you something."

"Anything."

"When you called us and said you had lost everything, what were you hoping we would do?"

The question caught me off guard.

I had expected him to ask about the letter.

Instead, he was asking about the calls.

I looked down at my hands.

"I wanted help."

"What kind?"

I took a breath.

"I didn't know exactly. I was frightened, Danny. I wanted someone to tell me I wasn't going to have to face everything by myself."

He nodded.

"Did you tell Michael and Stephanie that?"

"I told them I needed help."

"Did they ask what you needed?"

I couldn't answer immediately.

Because I knew what he was asking.

Michael had wanted to understand the practical problem.

Stephanie had wanted to know how it had happened.

Neither had asked the question Danny had asked me.

Neither had started by asking whether I was safe.

I didn't want to embarrass them in front of each other.

"They were surprised," I said.

Danny accepted the answer without arguing.

But Michael shifted on the couch.

"Are we really going to spend the whole evening discussing those phone calls?"

I turned toward him.

"No."

My voice came out more firmly than I expected.

Everyone looked at me.

I had spent so many years smoothing over uncomfortable moments that even I was surprised by the sound of my own voice.

"I called because I was frightened. I wasn't trying to make anyone feel guilty."

Michael looked away.

"I didn't say you were."

"No. You didn't."

I paused.

"But I need you to understand something. I didn't expect any of you to fix my life in a single evening. I needed to know that I could ask my own children for help without feeling ashamed."

The room went still.

Stephanie lowered her eyes.

Danny sat beside me without speaking.

I had not planned to say those words.

They came out because I was tired of pretending that the calls had not hurt me.

For once, I let the silence remain.

After a while, Stephanie reached across the space between us.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

Her voice was quiet.

I looked at her.

She seemed genuinely upset, though I couldn't know whether she was upset about the way she had responded or about hearing it described aloud.

I squeezed her hand.

"Thank you."

Michael didn't apologize.

He picked up his letter and unfolded it again.

I watched him for a moment, then turned back toward Danny.

He was looking at his father's handwriting.

"There's something I want you to know," he said.

My heart began to beat faster.

I waited.

Danny glanced at his brother and sister.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Dad didn't write these letters just to explain himself."

He paused.

"He wanted us to do something with what he left behind."

I felt a chill move through me.

"What do you mean?"

Danny looked down at the page.

"I don't know everything yet."

He took another breath.

"But I think he wanted us to stop pretending we understood our family better than we actually did."

No one spoke.

Michael stared at his letter.

Stephanie held hers tightly in both hands.

And I sat between my children, realizing that Walt had left us more than words on paper.

He had left us questions we could no longer avoid.

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the evening had darkened.

The small folding table stood in front of it, holding three envelopes that had once seemed ordinary.

Now they looked like the beginning of something none of us could put back where it had been.

I thought of Walt's final months.

I thought of the conversations he had ended too quickly and the worries he had carried alone.

I had spent years believing that a long marriage meant knowing the person beside you.

That evening, I began to understand that love and knowledge were not always the same thing.

Sometimes you could love someone for decades and still discover that there were parts of their life you had never truly seen.

Danny folded his letter and placed it on the table.

He didn't hide it.

He didn't hand it to anyone else.

He simply laid it beside the two opened envelopes, with the red seal resting near the edge.

Then he looked at all of us.

"I think we need to read these carefully," he said. "And we need to be honest about what they mean."

For once, Michael did not argue.

Stephanie nodded.

I looked at the three letters and felt the weight of my husband's absence settle over me again.

But beneath the grief, another feeling had begun to emerge.

I was afraid of what we might discover.

Still, I wanted to know.

Whatever Walt had left us, we could no longer pretend it wasn't there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Morning After Our Family Gathering, I Realized My Husband Had Left Behind Questions None of Us Could Answer

Danny waited until Kayla had returned from the hallway before opening his envelope.
