But more settled.”

I looked down at my glass.

“I've been thinking about some things.”

She nodded.

“That's usually when people get quieter.”

I laughed softly.

“Have you ever reached a point where you realize you've been making yourself smaller without meaning to?”

Patricia looked at me for a moment.

“Yes,” she said. “I have.”

I had not expected her to answer so quickly.

“What did you do?”

“Not enough at first.”

She glanced toward the kitchen.

“Then I started doing one thing differently. I also found out which people were willing to know me as I actually was.”

We stood quietly while the sound of conversation drifted from the kitchen.

Patricia did not ask what was happening in my marriage.

I did not tell her.

I was grateful for that.

When Aaron returned, he asked if I was ready to go.

I looked at the clock.

It was not especially late.

But I felt tired.

“Yes,” I said.

We thanked our hosts and drove home.

Aaron kept both hands on the steering wheel.

After several minutes, he said, “You seemed uncomfortable.”

“A little.”

“Was it something I did?”

I watched the streetlights pass.

“Not exactly.”

He waited.

“I don't like feeling that I have to present a version of our marriage that other people will approve of.”

“I didn't ask you to do that.”

“No. But when you said we were busy, I felt the old urge to help make everything sound fine.”

He nodded slowly.

“I suppose I do that, too.”

“You do.”

He looked at me briefly.

“Did I embarrass you?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

I turned toward him.

“I am not trying to embarrass you, Aaron. I'm trying to stop embarrassing myself by pretending that I never need anything.”

His hands tightened slightly around the wheel.

Then he relaxed them.

“I hadn't thought of it that way.”

We drove the rest of the way home in silence.

When we arrived, I took off my earrings and placed them on the dresser.

Aaron loosened his collar.

“I want to ask you something,” he said.

I turned toward him.

“Go ahead.”

“Do you think the board review is making you feel stronger because it's giving you something to do?”

The question stung.

I had wondered the same thing myself.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“I think taking action helped me realize I wasn't helpless.”

He leaned against the doorframe.

“But do you think you're seeing our marriage more clearly, or are you just angry?”

I considered the question before answering.

“Both things can be true. I have been angry. I still am, sometimes. But the concerns I raised about the company aren't a substitute for dealing with our marriage.”

He nodded.

“I don't want you using one to punish me for the other.”

“Neither do I.”

I held his gaze.

“But I also don't want you using our marriage as a reason to dismiss the concerns I raised.”

He looked away.

“I understand.”

I was not certain he did.

Still, he had listened to the whole answer.

That mattered.

The next morning, I woke early and went for a walk.

The sky was pale, and the sidewalks were damp from overnight rain.

I passed the small bakery near the corner and smelled warm bread through the open door.

I bought a loaf and carried it home.

Aaron was already in the kitchen when I arrived.

He looked at the bread.

“You went out early.”

“I wanted to walk.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I thought maybe we could walk together sometime.”

“We can.”

He seemed relieved.

Then I added, “But I also want to keep walking by myself.”

His expression changed for a second.

“I wasn't trying to stop you.”

“I know.”

I set the bread on the counter.

“I just want us to be able to do things together without assuming we have to do everything together.”

He thought about that.

“Fair enough.”

We ate breakfast.

Afterward, he asked whether I would help him choose a gift for his mother.

I agreed.

We sat at the table looking at a few options on his laptop.

He asked my opinion.

I gave it.

He disagreed with one suggestion, and we moved on.

It felt ordinary.

That was the part I had missed most.

Not grand declarations.

Not expensive dinners.

Not a dramatic apology that made the past disappear.

Just the ability to share a small decision without turning it into a test of who had the greater authority.

Later that afternoon, I received another message from Nathan.

There was still no final conclusion from the review.

He reminded me that if I had additional information relevant to the concerns already raised, I should send it through him rather than discuss it informally with people at the company.

I thanked him.

Then I closed the message.

I did not forward it to Aaron.

I did not hide it, either.

If he asked whether there was an update, I would tell him the truth.

But I was not going to turn every private communication into a report designed to calm him.

That evening, Aaron found me watering the plant.

“Anything from Nathan?” he asked.

“Yes. The review is still ongoing.”

He nodded.

“Nothing else?”

“Nothing final.”

He stood beside me.

“I keep hoping you'll tell me it's going to be all right.”

I turned off the watering can.

“I hope things turn out fairly, too.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked tired.

I wanted to take his face in my hands and tell him that I loved him, that I believed in him, that he had nothing to fear.

But I could not promise what I did not know.

“I love you,” I said. “I can say that honestly. I can't tell you what the review will conclude.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“All right.”

We stood beside the window.

A drop of water ran down the side of the plant pot and landed on the sill.

I wiped it with a cloth.

It was a small mess.

It had a simple solution.

I wished more things in our lives were like that.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: WHAT AN APOLOGY COULD AND COULD NOT DO

The following Thursday, Aaron asked whether I would come to a small dinner with two couples we had known for years.
