The meeting is scheduled for this morning.”

“Will Aaron know what I said?”

“He may learn that a review has been requested. I cannot promise you what individual directors will discuss with him. I can tell you that I will keep the conversation focused on the concerns you raised, not on private details of your marriage.”

I rubbed my thumb along the edge of the mug.

“I don't want them to think I'm doing this because I'm angry.”

“Then we will be careful to distinguish what you know from what you suspect.”

“And if I don't know enough?”

“Then you say that. Asking for an appropriate review is not the same as declaring someone guilty.”

I looked out the window.

The neighbor's dog was sniffing around a patch of wet grass.

Everything outside looked ordinary.

That was the strange part.

My life had begun to change, but the street still had the same cracked pavement and the same garbage bins waiting beside the curb.

“Thank you,” I said.

“You don't have to thank me for helping you ask a proper question.”

After we hung up, I wrote the date at the top of a clean page.

Underneath it, I wrote one sentence.

I am allowed to ask what I need to know.

I left it there.

At nine, I watered the plant beside the kitchen window.

One of its leaves had turned yellow at the edge.

I pinched it gently between my fingers, then stopped before pulling it off.

I didn't know enough to decide whether it needed to be removed.

That small hesitation made me smile.

For years, I had treated uncertainty as something I needed to solve immediately.

Now I was learning that sometimes I could wait.

At ten fifteen, Aaron called.

I watched his name light up the screen.

I almost let it ring out.

Then I answered.

“Hello.”

“Have you spoken to Nathan this morning?”

“Yes.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That the meeting was scheduled.”

Aaron exhaled sharply.

“You could at least tell me what you're planning to say.”

“I've already explained what I asked for.”

“You asked the board to review my work.”

“I asked them to review specific concerns through the proper process.”

“Do you hear yourself, Claire? You sound like a lawyer.”

I looked at the notebook.

“Maybe that's because I'm trying to be precise.”

He said nothing.

I could picture him in his office, standing beside the glass wall, one hand in his pocket.

He often stood that way during difficult calls.

It made him look calm, even when his voice betrayed him.

“Are you trying to hurt me?” he asked.

“No.”

“Then why do this now?”

I had rehearsed answers to that question.

I could have told him about the nights I spent awake, about the meals that went cold, about the way he sometimes looked through me while I was speaking.

Instead, I chose the answer that mattered most.

“Because I can't keep pretending that everything is fine.”

“This is about us.”

“It is about us, too. But the request I made concerns the company. Those are different things.”

“You're making them sound separate because that helps you.”

“I'm trying to keep them separate because they need to be handled properly.”

He laughed once, without humor.

“And what happens when the board decides there's nothing wrong?”

“Then we'll know more than we know now.”

“And what happens if they decide there is?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't know.”

“No, Aaron. I don't.”

For once, I didn't rush to soften the answer.

I let the silence remain.

He finally said, “I have a meeting.”

“I understand.”

“Are you going to be there?”

“No.”

“Of course not.”

I felt the old urge to explain myself.

I wanted to tell him that I had no reason to attend, that Nathan was representing the request, and that my absence was not a statement about Aaron's guilt.

But he already knew those things.

What he wanted was reassurance.

I had given him reassurance for years.

“I hope the meeting goes properly,” I said.

He hung up without answering.

I set the phone down.

My hands were shaking.

I put both palms flat on the table until they stopped.

Then I drank my coffee, which had gone cold again.

At noon, I took the photograph box out of the hall closet.

I had not opened it since the night Aaron and I spoke about whether we still loved each other.

Inside were pictures from our wedding, a trip to the coast, and the first apartment we rented together.

There was one photograph of Aaron sitting on the floor beside an unopened box, laughing at something I had said.

His hair was longer then.

His tie was loose around his neck.

I remembered taking that picture because he had insisted he could assemble a bookcase without reading the instructions.

He had finished the job at midnight.

The bookcase leaned slightly to the left.

We had kept it for years.

I held the photograph for a long time.

The man in it was not a stranger.

That was what made everything difficult.

If he had always been cruel, I might have known what to do.

If he had never loved me, I might have found the courage to leave.

But our marriage had held real happiness.

There had been kindness, laughter, and days when I felt that no one in the world understood me better than he did.

Those memories did not disappear because things had become painful.

They did not erase the pain, either.

I returned the photograph to the box.

Then I put the box away.

I did not need to decide the whole marriage that afternoon.

I only needed to stop using the good years as a reason to ignore the bad ones.

At three, Nathan sent a brief message saying the meeting had taken place.

He did not include details.

He asked whether I was available for a call later.

I replied that I was.

Then I closed the message and went outside to collect the mail.

There were two bills, a grocery advertisement, and a letter addressed to Aaron from a professional association.

I carried everything inside.

For the first time in years, I did not open his mail or sort it into piles for him.

I placed it beside his keys on the entry table.

That evening, I made soup.

I chopped carrots, onions, and celery, listening to the knife strike the cutting board.

The familiar work steadied me.

I had just lowered the heat when my phone rang again.

It was Aaron.

“I want to talk,” he said.

“About the meeting?”

“About everything.”

I turned the burner down.

“Are you coming home?”

“I can.”

“Then come home.”

He arrived forty minutes later.

He carried no overnight bag this time.

He took off his coat, hung it on the hook, and stood in the doorway of the kitchen.

The soup was simmering.

I handed him a clean spoon.

“Try it.”

He looked at me as if he had expected something else.

Then he tasted it.

“It needs salt.”

I reached for the salt.

He stopped me.

“No. It's fine.”

We stood on opposite sides of the stove.

Neither of us knew how to begin.

Finally, he said, “I don't want to lose you.”

I looked at him.

“I don't want to lose myself, either.”

He lowered his eyes.

For once, he did not argue with the sentence.

We ate at the table where my notebook sat beside the salt shaker.

The scratch across the wood was visible between us.

Aaron traced it with one finger.

“Do you remember when we made that?”

“I remember.”

“You were furious with me.”

“You dropped a toolbox on the table.”

“I thought the cloth would protect it.”

“It didn't.”

He smiled faintly.

I smiled, too.

For a moment, we were simply two people remembering something foolish from years before.

Then the moment passed.

Aaron put down his spoon.

“I don't know how to make this right.”

I wanted to tell him that I could teach him.

I wanted to give him a list, as if our marriage were another project he could finish if I explained the steps carefully enough.

Instead, I said, “You have to be willing to look at what happened without asking me to make it easier for you.”

He nodded.

“I can try.”

“Trying is a beginning. It isn't the answer.”

“I know.”

I wasn't sure he did.

But I let the conversation continue.

For that evening, it was enough that neither of us pretended the questions had disappeared.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: THE SPACE BETWEEN AN ANSWER AND A PROMISE

The next morning, I woke before my alarm and lay still beside the empty space Aaron had left behind.
