7 – The More Aaron Tried to Separate Our Marriage From the Questions Reaching His Office, the More Clearly I Saw What I Had Been Avoiding

For two days, Aaron didn't call.

I received a short message about a household payment and another about a document he needed.

I answered both.

Neither of us mentioned the board.

Neither of us mentioned the marriage.

It was as though we had agreed to speak only about things that could be completed with a sentence or two.

I found the arrangement easier than I expected.

Not because I wanted to live that way forever.

Because I had finally stopped mistaking constant communication for closeness.

A person could speak to you every day and still refuse to hear you.

I knew that now.

On the third morning, I went through the papers I had organized and placed the most important ones in a separate folder.

I labeled it clearly.

Then I put it in a secure place.

I wasn't trying to hide it from Aaron.

I was making sure I could find it when I needed it.

That small distinction mattered to me.

I had spent years believing that anything I did independently required an explanation.

Now I was learning that being married did not mean giving up the right to prepare for my own future.

Around noon, Nathan sent a message asking whether I could speak later that afternoon.

I agreed.

When we spoke, he explained that he had no new conclusion to report.

The board's representatives would handle the matter according to their responsibilities.

He wanted to make sure I understood that the request was not a finding of wrongdoing.

I told him I understood.

He also asked whether Aaron had continued contacting me about the submission.

I described our recent conversations.

Nathan advised me to keep any further discussion about the formal request between the relevant parties and their representatives.

I wrote that down.

After the call, I felt strangely disappointed.

I had not expected a quick answer.

Still, part of me had hoped that making a difficult decision would bring immediate clarity.

Instead, I was left with the same questions I had been carrying for weeks.

What did I want from my marriage?

What could I forgive?

And what would I have to give up about myself to stay?

I couldn't answer those questions in one afternoon.

I put the folder away and went for a walk.

The air was warm.

A delivery truck passed at the end of the street, and someone nearby was trimming a hedge.

Ordinary sounds.

Ordinary life.

I found comfort in them.

For so long, I had measured my days by Aaron's movements.

Now I was beginning to notice the things that existed outside his schedule.

When I returned, there was a message from him.

He wanted to meet for dinner.

I read it twice.

Then I replied that we could meet, provided we discussed our relationship rather than the board's request.

His response came quickly.

He said he wanted to talk about everything.

I agreed to a time.

I chose a restaurant we had visited before, a quiet place where the tables were far enough apart that other people couldn't easily hear a conversation.

I arrived first.

I ordered water and sat with my hands folded in my lap.

When Aaron came in, he looked tired.

His tie was slightly crooked, and he kept checking his phone as he walked toward the table.

He put it facedown when he sat.

"Thanks for coming."

"Of course."

For a moment, neither of us knew how to begin.

Then he asked whether I had been sleeping.

The question surprised me.

"Better than I was."

He nodded.

"I haven't been sleeping much."

I didn't know what to say.

I was aware of the pressure he was under, but I couldn't take responsibility for relieving it.

The waiter came.

We ordered food.

When we were alone again, Aaron leaned forward.

"I need you to understand something."

I waited.

"The company is my life's work."

"I know."

"I've spent years building it. Every decision matters. Every relationship matters."

"I understand that."

He looked frustrated.

"Then why are you doing this?"

I set my glass down.

"Aaron, I didn't contact the board to punish you."

"But you knew what it would mean."

"I knew the request would be taken seriously. That's why I wanted it handled properly."

He shook his head.

"You could have spoken to me."

"I have spoken to you."

"When?"

I stared at him.

The question hurt.

Not because I couldn't answer it.

Because he seemed to have forgotten every conversation in which I had tried to explain how his behavior affected me.

"I've asked you why you stay away. I've asked you to tell me when you'll be home. I've tried to talk about how we live together."

He looked down at the table.

"You always make it sound as though I'm doing something terrible."

"I've tried to tell you how I feel."

"And I've told you I'm busy."

"Yes."

The word sat between us.

He looked up.

"That's not a crime, Claire."

"I never said it was."

"Then what are we arguing about?"

I took a breath.

"We're arguing because you keep treating my feelings like accusations."

He leaned back.

For a moment, he looked genuinely confused.

I had seen that expression before, usually when I refused to accept an explanation that had worked in the past.

"I don't know what you want me to say," he admitted.

It was the closest he had come to acknowledging the problem.

I wanted to reach across the table and tell him that I had been waiting years to hear something like that.

Instead, I answered honestly.

"I want you to stop assuming that if you don't understand my feelings, they must be unreasonable."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I never said that."

"You don't have to say it."

The waiter brought our food.

We stopped talking while the plates were placed in front of us.

I looked at the meal I had ordered and realized I wasn't hungry.

I took a small bite anyway.

Aaron ate a few mouthfuls before speaking again.

"Are you planning to leave me?"

I put my fork down.

"I don't know yet."

He stared at me.

"You don't know?"

"No."

"After three years?"

I looked at him carefully.

"After three years, I'm finally trying to make the decision honestly."

He didn't respond.

I continued.

"I don't want to leave just because I'm hurt. I don't want to stay just because I'm afraid of what leaving would mean."

He looked toward the window.

For the first time that evening, he seemed unable to find a quick answer.

I felt sad.

I still loved parts of him.

I loved the man who had once stayed up with me when I was sick.

I remembered the way he had held my hand during a difficult family funeral and the way he had made me laugh when I thought I couldn't.

Those memories were real.

So was everything that had happened afterward.

I couldn't erase either side simply because choosing between them was painful.

Aaron looked back at me.

"I thought we were happy."

I felt a lump in my throat.

"I thought we were, too."

He lowered his eyes.

The conversation could have ended there.

Instead, he asked whether I would at least agree to stop discussing the board with anyone else.

I looked at him.

"I've been following my attorney's advice. I haven't been spreading anything about you."

"But you could stop this."

"I can't make the board's decisions for them."

"You could withdraw your request."

"I could ask Nathan about the process. But I'm not going to promise to withdraw it just because you're upset."

His expression changed.

The brief softness disappeared.

"So this is more important than our marriage."

"No."

I spoke before he could finish.

"Our marriage is important. That's why I won't pretend everything is fine."

He stared at me.

Then he pushed his plate away.

"I don't think you understand what you're risking."

I felt the old fear rise.

I thought about the life we had built, the house, the routines, the people who knew us as a couple.

I thought about the possibility that I might lose more than I could predict.

But I also thought about the woman I had become while trying to keep everything intact.

"I understand that there are risks," I said.

"I'm not sure you do."

"Maybe I don't understand every consequence."

I held his gaze.

"But I'm not willing to ignore what I know."

He looked away.

We finished dinner without discussing the board again.

When we stood outside, Aaron asked whether I wanted him to drive me home.

I told him I had driven myself.

He nodded.

For a moment, we stood beside the curb without moving.

Then he asked whether I would call him if I changed my mind about the marriage.

I almost said yes automatically.

Instead, I answered the question he had actually asked.

"If I have something important to say, I'll tell you."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he walked to his car.

I watched him leave.

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt tired, sad, and uncertain.

But I also felt that I had finally spoken to him as an equal rather than someone asking permission to be unhappy.

When I got home, I took off my shoes and placed them neatly by the door.

I washed my hands.

I changed into comfortable clothes.

Then I opened my notebook.

I wrote down the date of the dinner and a few brief notes about what we had discussed.

I didn't record every sentence.

I didn't need to.

The important part was that I had told Aaron the truth and refused to take it back.

I closed the notebook.

For once, I didn't feel compelled to add another entry about where he had spent the night.

I was beginning to understand that my future could not depend on keeping a perfect record of my husband's absences.

It would depend on what I chose to do with the life I still had.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When Aaron Finally Asked Whether I Still Wanted Our Marriage, I Realized That Love Alone Couldn’t Answer the Question He Was Asking

For two days, Aaron didn't call.
