To the directors. To everyone."

I thought about the reception.

I thought about the way he had asked me not to bring up personal matters.

I thought about all the times I had smiled beside him while quietly wondering why I felt so alone.

"I've spent a long time worrying about how things look," I said.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the answer I have."

He became quiet again.

Then he asked whether I would tell Nathan to withdraw the request.

I felt my stomach tighten.

There it was.

The question beneath all the others.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

Aaron didn't speak.

I waited.

Finally, he said, "You can't be serious."

"I am."

"You're willing to let this continue?"

"I'm willing to let the proper process continue."

He laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"You've changed."

I looked at the watering can beside the back door.

"Yes."

For a moment, I thought he might say something honest.

Something about the nights he had stayed away.

Something about the way we had stopped speaking to each other except when one of us needed something.

Instead, he said he had another meeting and ended the call.

I stood there for a few seconds.

Then I put the phone down.

I hadn't expected him to agree with me.

I had hoped, perhaps foolishly, that he might finally ask why I had reached this point.

He still wasn't asking.

He was asking how to make the problem go away.

Over the next several days, Aaron's behavior became more formal.

His messages concerned practical matters.

He asked about documents.

He asked whether I had arranged a service appointment for the house.

He asked whether I could confirm a date for an upcoming family obligation.

I answered what I could.

I didn't use the conversations to reopen our arguments.

I also didn't pretend we were fine.

When he asked whether I would attend another company function, I told him I needed to know more about the event before deciding.

He replied that it was important.

I asked what was expected of me.

He said I would be there as his wife.

I stared at the message.

That was the role he understood.

The one that required no questions, no independent opinions, and no visible sign that anything was wrong.

I replied that I would consider it.

He didn't answer.

That evening, I called my friend.

We spoke about ordinary things first.

She told me about a problem at work.

I told her I had been trying to get more organized.

Eventually, she asked how things were going with Aaron.

I didn't give her the whole story.

I told her that we were living separately for the moment and that I was getting legal advice.

She was quiet for a moment.

"Are you safe?"

The question caught me off guard.

"Yes."

"Are you sure?"

I thought about it.

I wasn't afraid that Aaron would physically hurt me.

But I was beginning to understand how much his anger could affect the way I saw myself.

"I'm safe," I said again. "I'm just trying to figure out what comes next."

She told me I could call her whenever I needed to talk.

I thanked her.

After we hung up, I sat at the table for a long time.

I had been so focused on keeping my marriage intact that I had stopped telling people how I felt.

I had believed that privacy meant carrying everything alone.

Now I understood that there was a difference between protecting a relationship and hiding inside it.

The following morning, Nathan called with a practical question about the information I had already provided.

I answered it as accurately as I could.

He explained that the board's review would follow its own procedures and that neither of us could predict its outcome.

I told him I understood.

I wanted to be careful.

I wanted to be fair.

And I wanted to make sure that my personal feelings did not become a substitute for facts.

After the call, I wrote down what he had said.

Then I closed the notebook.

For the first time in weeks, I didn't feel the need to add another entry about Aaron's absence.

I knew he was away.

I knew he was angry.

I knew the board had received a request.

Those were the facts.

Everything else would have to be established through the process.

I could wait for that without turning the waiting into another form of punishment.

That evening, Aaron called again.

He sounded tired.

"Can we talk about us?"

I sat down slowly.

"Yes."

"I don't want this to become a war."

"Neither do I."

"Then we need to find a way to stop making everything worse."

I considered my answer.

"I agree that we need to stop making things worse."

He seemed encouraged.

"Good. Then tell Nathan—"

I interrupted him gently.

"No, Aaron."

He stopped.

"I want to talk about our marriage. I don't want to discuss withdrawing the request."

His voice hardened.

"Those things are connected."

"They may be connected for you. But I can't pretend our marriage is fine just to make the other problem disappear."

He was silent.

I continued.

"I don't know what the board will decide. I don't know what happens to us. But I know I can't go back to the way things were."

He said nothing for several seconds.

Then he asked whether I was saying I wanted a divorce.

I looked at the notebook on the table.

"I haven't made a final decision."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying I need time to decide what is right for me."

He breathed out.

"I can't believe we're here."

Neither could I.

But we were.

And for the first time, I wasn't going to pretend that acknowledging it would somehow make me responsible for everything that had brought us there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The More Aaron Tried to Separate Our Marriage From the Questions Reaching His Office, the More Clearly I Saw What I Had Been Avoiding

Aaron didn't come home that evening.
