I'll let you know when I can."

I looked at the notebook on the desk.

"Fine."

He seemed surprised by how quickly I ended the conversation.

I was surprised, too.

For years, I would have found another way to keep him talking.

I would have softened the question, explained why I had asked it, and reassured him that I wasn't trying to control his time.

That day, I simply put the phone down.

I had no interest in convincing him that my feelings were reasonable.

I was beginning to understand that a person could spend years arguing for the right to be heard and still never receive it.

That evening, Aaron sent a message saying he would not be coming home.

I read it while standing beside the kitchen counter.

Then I turned the phone over and finished preparing dinner.

I ate at the table.

I washed my plate.

I put the leftovers away.

Nothing about the evening was dramatic.

That was what made it different.

I wasn't waiting for a phone call to determine whether I could relax.

I wasn't rehearsing what I would say if Aaron came through the door.

I wasn't preparing to pretend that everything was fine.

I went to bed when I was tired.

The following morning, I woke up before the alarm and found myself thinking about the company.

Not about Aaron's title or the size of his office.

I thought about the way he spoke of the people who worked for him.

He described some as brilliant, some as difficult, and others as replaceable.

He rarely spoke about anyone as though they might know something he didn't.

I used to find that confidence impressive.

Now it seemed less like certainty and more like a habit no one had challenged.

At breakfast, I opened my laptop and looked through the information I already had access to.

I didn't try to enter restricted accounts or obtain private files.

I didn't need to.

I began with the documents that had been shared with me over the years, the paperwork I had signed, and the records I had been expected to keep.

Some of it was familiar.

Some of it required more attention than I had given it before.

I took notes.

I wrote down questions.

And when I reached something I didn't understand, I marked it for later instead of guessing.

By lunchtime, I had a clearer picture of our household arrangements.

I still didn't know what Aaron had been doing during those nights away.

But that question no longer seemed like the only one worth asking.

There was a larger issue beneath it.

Aaron had grown accustomed to deciding what I needed to know.

He had also grown accustomed to believing that whatever he didn't explain would remain beyond my reach.

I had helped him maintain that belief.

That afternoon, I called a lawyer.

Not to threaten Aaron.

Not to punish him for staying out.

I wanted to understand my options before I made any decisions.

The conversation was brief.

I explained that my marriage had become difficult, that my husband and I had complicated financial arrangements, and that I needed independent advice.

The lawyer asked me a few basic questions.

I answered as accurately as I could.

We arranged a meeting.

After I hung up, I sat quietly for several minutes.

I had expected to feel frightened.

Instead, I felt steady.

That steadiness didn't mean I was ready to leave my marriage.

It meant I had finally stopped treating the possibility as something I wasn't allowed to consider.

When Aaron came home the next evening, he seemed to notice the change before I said anything.

He placed his keys on the counter and looked around the kitchen.

"Did you get the documents I asked for?"

"Which documents?"

"The ones for the meeting."

I knew what he meant.

I had prepared the folder, just as I always did.

"It's on your desk."

He glanced toward the stairs.

"Good."

Then he looked back at me.

"Have you been upset about something?"

The question almost made me smile.

For once, he was asking.

"Not particularly."

He studied my face.

"You've been quiet."

"I've been busy."

"Doing what?"

"Taking care of things."

It was an ordinary answer.

But he seemed unable to decide whether I had meant anything by it.

Aaron was used to being the person who asked questions.

He wasn't used to receiving answers that didn't invite further discussion.

He opened the refrigerator, took out a bottle of water, and drank half of it before speaking again.

"Listen, Claire. I know the last few weeks haven't been ideal."

I waited.

"Work has been intense."

"I understand that."

"Then I need you to stop assuming the worst whenever something changes."

I looked at him.

"I haven't assumed anything."

He frowned.

"You're making this harder than it needs to be."

There it was.

The familiar turn.

Somehow, the conversation had become about my behavior rather than his absence.

I used to follow him down that road.

I used to explain myself until we were both exhausted, and then I would apologize simply to end the argument.

This time, I didn't.

"I don't want to argue."

"Neither do I."

"Then we agree."

I returned to the counter and picked up the papers I had been sorting.

He remained where he was.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he gave a short laugh.

"You've changed lately."

I placed the papers in a folder.

"Maybe."

He waited for more.

I had nothing else to give him.

He went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen until I heard the shower start.

Then I sat down with my notebook and wrote one sentence.

I didn't need Aaron to admit there was a problem before I could begin dealing with it.

I read the words twice.

They were simple.

They were also the first honest thing I had written about my marriage in a long time.

Over the next few days, I continued my quiet preparations.

I organized records.

I made copies of documents I was entitled to keep.

I wrote down questions for my lawyer.

I did not announce any of it to Aaron.

There was no reason to.

I was not trying to win an argument.

I was trying to make sure that whatever happened next, I would not be standing in the middle of it without understanding where I stood.

Aaron continued his routine.

He left early.

He returned late.

Sometimes he called.

Sometimes he didn't.

Each time, I felt the familiar disappointment begin to rise.

Each time, I reminded myself that disappointment was not an instruction to chase him.

I could feel hurt without turning that hurt into another unanswered message.

I could be married to him without pretending that every choice he made was beyond question.

And I could love the man I had once believed him to be without ignoring the man standing in front of me.

The realization didn't make the situation easier.

It made it clearer.

One afternoon, Aaron asked me to attend a company event with him.

He mentioned it while fastening his watch, as though he were adding an appointment to a calendar.

"You'll need to be ready by six."

I looked up from the book I was reading.

"What is the event?"

"The annual reception."

"I know what it is. I was asking what the occasion was."

He gave me a patient look.

"Investors, directors, a few important clients. The usual."

I closed the book.

"All right."

He seemed relieved.

Then he added, "Please don't bring up anything personal while we're there."

I stared at him.

"Was I planning to?"

"No. I'm just saying."

He adjusted his cuff.

"I need the evening to go smoothly."

I wanted to ask why he assumed I would be the person who disrupted it.

Instead, I nodded.

He left the room looking satisfied.

I sat for a moment, thinking about what he had said.

The reception was supposed to be a public celebration of the company he had built.

And he had already decided that my role was to help him maintain the right appearance.

I knew that role well.

I had played it at dinners, charity events, and countless evenings when I smiled at people while wondering whether my husband would come home afterward.

But this time, I began to consider what it would mean to attend the event without measuring every word against Aaron's expectations.

I didn't yet know what I would do.

I only knew that I was no longer willing to disappear simply because he found my presence useful.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: At the Company Reception, Everyone Saw Aaron as a Man in Complete Control, While I Began to Understand What His Confidence Was Hiding

I didn't confront Aaron that evening.
