12 – The Box Was Still Sitting Between Marcus and Me, but I Was Finally Learning That Understanding My Father Would Take More Than One Evening

I took a breath and looked into the box again.

For the first time since Marcus had arrived, I didn't feel as though I was racing toward an answer.

I had spent much of the evening trying to determine what my father had meant by leaving me the shoes and the letter.

I had examined both objects from every angle.

I had questioned Marcus.

I had questioned myself.

I had returned to old memories and found myself wondering whether I had misunderstood them.

None of that had given me a complete explanation.

But perhaps completeness was the wrong goal.

I couldn't recover every thought my father had kept to himself.

I couldn't return to the conversations we had failed to finish.

I couldn't ask him why he had chosen these particular things or what he had hoped I would feel when I opened the box.

Those opportunities were gone.

I had to work with what remained.

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written clearly across the front.

I knew the handwriting.

I knew the letter belonged to me.

I knew my father had left it to be delivered.

Those facts did not require interpretation.

I looked at the shoes.

They were my size.

They were in good condition.

They had been placed inside the box with care.

Again, those were facts.

I could recognize them without turning them into promises.

That distinction seemed small, but it mattered.

I had often treated uncertainty as a problem that had to be eliminated immediately.

If I couldn't explain someone's behavior, I decided what it meant.

If the explanation hurt, I held on to the hurt because at least it gave me a clear position.

I knew where I stood.

I knew whom to blame.

I knew which questions to stop asking.

But certainty built on incomplete information was not the same as understanding.

I was beginning to see that.

I didn't like how long it had taken me.

Still, I was grateful to recognize it now.

Marcus looked toward the box.

"Are you going to keep going?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

I moved the packing paper aside again.

There was no need to rush, but I didn't want to abandon the task simply because it had become emotionally difficult.

I had asked for the truth often enough.

Now I needed to be willing to examine what I had been given.

I kept the shoes and envelope close by.

I wanted them within reach, but I didn't want them covering anything else.

The table had limited space, so I moved the letter slightly to one side and adjusted the box.

The cardboard scraped against the wood.

I remembered the sound from earlier.

It was ordinary.

That was what made the evening feel so strange.

Nothing in the kitchen looked different from the way it had looked before Marcus arrived.

Yet I could no longer sit there with the same assumptions I had carried into the evening.

I had begun to recognize how much of my understanding of my father depended on what I believed his silence meant.

I had treated silence as rejection.

Sometimes it had felt like rejection.

But I could not claim to know that it had always meant the same thing.

Perhaps he had been stubborn.

Perhaps he had struggled to express himself.

Perhaps he had simply believed that practical actions were more useful than difficult conversations.

I didn't know which explanation was right.

I didn't need to choose one yet.

What mattered was that I had finally stopped treating my first interpretation as the only possible one.

I glanced at Marcus.

He was watching me without trying to direct what I did next.

I was glad he had stayed.

His presence had made the evening less lonely, even though he couldn't provide the answers I wanted.

I hadn't expected to learn anything from his silence.

But perhaps I had.

He had shown me that a person could remain present without pretending to know what another person needed to hear.

My father might have struggled with that.

Or perhaps I had struggled to recognize it when it appeared.

I couldn't say.

I returned my attention to the box.

The letter remained closed inside its envelope.

The shoes sat together beside it.

I no longer felt the need to move them around.

They could stay where they were.

For the first time, I was comfortable leaving some questions unanswered while I continued looking for what I could know.

That was a change I hadn't expected to make.

I had arrived at the table wanting my father to explain himself.

I was leaving that expectation behind, at least for the moment.

Not because I no longer wanted answers.

Because I was beginning to understand that wanting an answer did not mean I could demand one from an object, a memory, or another person.

I had to be patient enough to learn what was available.

And honest enough to admit when it wasn't.

I placed both hands on the edge of the table and looked at the box.

There was still more to examine.

I didn't know whether the remaining contents would make the situation clearer or introduce questions I hadn't considered.

Either possibility was possible.

I was ready to accept that.

I had spent too much time preparing myself for disappointment before I knew what was coming.

I had also spent too much time hoping that one conversation would repair everything that had happened before it.

Neither approach had served me well.

This time, I wanted to proceed without deciding in advance how I would feel.

I would look at what was there.

I would read what needed reading.

I would keep the things that mattered safe.

And I would give myself permission not to understand everything immediately.

I looked at Marcus.

"Thanks for bringing it."

He nodded.

"You're welcome."

There was nothing else to add.

The exchange was simple, and that was part of why it felt genuine.

I didn't ask him to explain my father.

I didn't ask him to reassure me that the letter meant something good.

I simply thanked him for bringing what had been left for me.

Then I turned back to the box.

I had no final conclusion about my father.

I still carried the memories that hurt.

I still wished some conversations had gone differently.

I still wanted answers I might never receive.

But I no longer believed I had to settle every question before I could take another step.

The box remained open on the table.

The shoes and the envelope waited beside it.

I leaned forward and continued examining what my father had left, prepared to accept whatever I could honestly learn.

<a
