7 – The Longer I Sat With the Letter, the More I Realized That My Anger Had Been Built Around Questions I Never Really Knew How to Ask

I didn't open the box immediately.

Instead, I sat with my hands on the table and looked at the things already outside it.

The shoes.

The envelope.

The letter tucked safely inside.

I had expected to feel relief after finding something written in my father's hand.

Instead, I felt exposed.

The letter had reminded me that my father had thoughts I could not access and intentions I could not verify.

That was hardly surprising.

Everyone has an inner life that other people cannot fully see.

But it had been easier for me to forget that when it came to him.

I had treated his silence as an answer.

If he didn't explain himself, I decided he didn't care whether I understood.

If he didn't ask how I felt, I assumed he wasn't interested.

If he made a decision without discussing it with me, I believed my opinion meant nothing to him.

Some of those conclusions might have been justified.

Others might not have been.

The problem was that I had stopped separating what I knew from what I suspected.

I had allowed my suspicions to harden into memories.

And once a memory becomes part of the story you tell yourself, it is difficult to question it.

I looked at the envelope again.

My name was still clear across the front.

Daniel.

I had thought that seeing my name would make me feel recognized.

Instead, it made me wonder how many times my father had thought about writing to me before he finally did.

I would never know the answer unless something else in the box helped explain it.

I wasn't going to invent one.

I had to remind myself of that more than once.

Marcus sat quietly across from me.

He seemed content to let me work through my thoughts without asking me to share them.

I appreciated his patience.

I also felt guilty for needing it.

I had always imagined that by the time I reached adulthood, I would have figured out how to handle the complicated parts of my family without feeling so unsettled.

That hadn't happened.

Age had taught me how to hide my reactions.

It hadn't necessarily taught me how to understand them.

I could sit in a room and look calm while my mind returned to the same painful questions.

I could tell someone I was fine and spend the next hour thinking about what I should have said.

I could convince myself that I had moved on, only to discover that one small object could bring the old feelings back.

The shoes had done exactly that.

They were so ordinary that I couldn't dismiss them as a grand gesture.

They were also too specific to ignore.

My father had known my size.

I kept returning to that fact because it was simple.

There was no argument about what it meant on the surface.

He had chosen a pair of shoes that would fit me.

What I couldn't know was what he had hoped would happen after I received them.

Maybe he had wanted me to use them.

Maybe he had thought they were something I needed.

Maybe they represented an intention I had not yet understood.

I couldn't tell.

And perhaps the reason I kept thinking about them was that I wanted the answer to be simple, too.

I wanted my father's care to be as easy to recognize as the size printed inside the shoe.

I wanted to stop searching for it in the gaps between his words.

But people rarely make things that easy for one another.

My father certainly hadn't.

I rested my elbows on the table and lowered my head for a moment.

I wasn't crying.

I wasn't even close to it.

I was tired.

Tired of being angry.

Tired of defending the anger.

Tired of wondering whether letting go of some of it would mean admitting that I had been wrong.

That last part was difficult to acknowledge.

I had built so much of my understanding around the idea that my father had failed me.

If I questioned that idea, I worried that I would somehow betray the younger version of myself who had needed more from him.

I didn't want to tell that younger version that his hurt had been imaginary.

It hadn't been.

Whatever my father had intended, I had experienced the distance between us.

I had wanted more conversations.

I had wanted more explanations.

I had wanted to feel that my questions mattered.

Those things were real.

The shoes could not erase them.

The letter could not turn every painful memory into a misunderstanding.

But neither could my memories prove that my father had never cared.

I had to leave room for both truths.

I lifted my head.

Marcus was looking toward the window.

The light outside had changed while we sat there.

I hadn't noticed the moment when the room began to grow dimmer.

I wondered how long we had been sitting at the table.

Time had passed without my paying attention.

I glanced at the clock, then looked away.

I didn't want to turn the evening into a deadline.

There was no reason I had to understand everything before the night ended.

I could finish examining the box another time if I needed to.

I could keep the letter somewhere safe and return to it when I was less overwhelmed.

The thought brought a little relief.

For the first time, I allowed myself to consider that I might not need to solve the entire relationship in one sitting.

I could take the box one step at a time.

I could read what my father had written without forcing myself to decide whether it was enough.

I could look at the shoes without demanding that they explain the past.

And I could accept that some questions might remain unanswered.

That didn't mean I had to stop asking them.

It meant I had to stop punishing myself for not knowing.

I sat up and straightened the envelope.

Then I placed it beside the shoes again.

The two objects looked almost insignificant together.

A letter.

A pair of work shoes.

Nothing that would have caught anyone else's attention if they had been sitting on a shelf.

But I had learned something from them already.

I had learned that my memories, however sincere, were not the same thing as complete knowledge.

I had learned that my anger could be justified without being the only truth.

And I had learned that I could be curious about my father without pretending he had never hurt me.

That was a difficult balance.

I didn't know whether I could maintain it.

But I wanted to try.

I looked into the box again.

I was ready to continue.

Not because I expected the next thing to explain everything.

Because I had finally stopped demanding that it do so.
