3 – My Father’s Handwriting Was the One Thing I Trusted, but I Had No Idea Whether I Could Trust What He Left Me

I turned the envelope over once more.

My name was the only thing written on it.

Daniel.

I traced the letters with my eyes, recognizing the slight angle of the writing and the way my father had pressed the pen firmly against the paper.

He had written my name many times during his life.

On cards.

On forms.

On the occasional note reminding me to take care of something.

But seeing it on an envelope inside a box he had prepared for me felt different.

There was no ordinary reason for it to be there.

Whatever he had written inside, he had wanted me to receive it.

That much was clear.

I took a slow breath and slid a finger beneath the flap.

The paper resisted slightly.

I was careful not to tear it.

I didn't want to damage something I had waited years to see, even though I hadn't known I was waiting for it.

When the envelope finally opened, I paused again.

I could see the edge of a folded sheet inside.

Nothing else.

No photograph tucked against it.

No second envelope.

Just a letter.

I pulled it out and unfolded it.

The paper made a dry sound as it opened across the table.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

I recognized it immediately.

I had expected that recognition to make me feel closer to him.

Instead, it made the room feel strangely empty.

He was not there to explain anything.

He was not there to watch my face as I read.

He had left the words behind and trusted someone else to deliver them.

I looked at the first line.

Then I looked away.

I had spent enough of my life wishing my father would talk to me that I hadn't considered how difficult it might be to hear from him when I could no longer answer.

The letter waited beneath my hands.

I straightened it and began reading.

I won't pretend I understood everything immediately.

I didn't.

At first, I was too conscious of the handwriting to take in the meaning of the words.

I noticed where he had paused between sentences.

I noticed the slight differences in the pressure of the pen.

I even noticed a small mark near the edge of the page, as though he had rested his hand there before continuing.

Those details were easier to face than the letter itself.

I had spent years remembering the things my father hadn't said.

Now I was afraid of what he had finally chosen to put into words.

I read the opening again.

Then I continued.

Whatever he had wanted me to understand, he had taken the time to write it down.

I could no longer tell myself he had simply forgotten.

I could no longer assume he had never thought about the questions I carried.

The letter existed.

My name was on it.

And the box had been delivered to my kitchen for a reason.

I placed the page flat on the table and looked at Marcus.

"Did he say anything to you about this?"

Marcus shook his head.

"He told me to make sure you got the box."

"Nothing else?"

"Nothing that would help you understand it."

I watched him carefully.

He wasn't avoiding my eyes.

He wasn't trying to soften the situation.

He seemed to believe that whatever answers I needed were inside the box, not in anything he could tell me.

I looked back at the letter.

I wanted to ask Marcus what my father had been like during the last period of his life.

Had he spoken about me?

Had he mentioned the things that had gone wrong between us?

Had he ever admitted that he knew I was hurt?

But those were different questions.

They were questions about the man I remembered, not the man who had written the letter.

I wasn't ready to ask them.

I returned to the page.

As I read, I began to understand that the box wasn't simply a collection of possessions my father had kept.

He had chosen these things.

The shoes.

The envelope.

The way everything had been arranged.

It had been deliberate.

I looked at the shoes again, and for a moment I wondered whether they were connected to something I hadn't yet discovered.

They were work shoes.

Practical shoes.

Something a person might buy when he expected someone to need them.

But I had no way of knowing what my father had intended.

I reminded myself not to get ahead of the evidence.

I had done that too often with him.

A small gesture became a promise in my mind.

A brief conversation became a sign that things might change.

Then life continued, and I was left trying to explain why I had expected more.

I wasn't going to do that again.

I folded the letter along its existing crease and set it beside the envelope.

The paper looked fragile against the wooden table.

I didn't want to lose it.

I also didn't want to pretend it had answered everything.

Some questions were still sitting between the lines.

I could feel them there, even before I knew how to name them.

Marcus finally pulled out the chair opposite mine and sat down.

He rested his hands on the table.

For the first time since arriving, he looked as though he might say something more.

I waited.

He looked at the open box.

Then at me.

"Your dad wanted you to have it."

I nodded.

"I can see that."

Marcus lowered his eyes briefly.

"I know this isn't easy."

I almost told him that he couldn't possibly know what it felt like.

The words came close to leaving my mouth.

Then I stopped.

That would have been unfair.

Marcus had come to my home carrying something he had been trusted to deliver. He had done what my father asked him to do, and he was sitting there while I tried to make sense of it.

I didn't need to make him responsible for everything my father had failed to explain.

"I'm trying to understand," I said.

It was the most honest answer I could give.

Marcus nodded.

He didn't tell me to be patient.

He didn't promise that everything would make sense later.

He simply remained where he was.

I appreciated that more than I expected.

I picked up the letter again and read it from the beginning.

This time, I paid attention to the words rather than the handwriting.

I tried to read it as if it had been written by someone I didn't know.

Someone who had no history with me.

Someone whose choices I could judge without remembering every argument and every disappointment that had come before.

It was difficult.

My father had been part of my life for so long that I couldn't separate his words from the man I remembered.

Every sentence brought something back.

A conversation.

A silence.

A moment when I had wanted him to explain himself and he had refused.

I felt the old anger returning.

But beneath it was something else.

Curiosity.

I wanted to know why he had waited.

I wanted to know what had made him choose this moment, even if the decision had been made long before Marcus arrived.

I wanted to know why the shoes were included.

And I wanted to know what else my father had placed in the box.

I looked down at the remaining contents.

I hadn't examined everything.

The letter had distracted me, and the shoes had raised more questions than they answered.

I took another breath and put the page back into its envelope.

I didn't want to lose track of it.

Then I moved the envelope to a clear space on the table.

I would keep it there until I had finished looking through the box.

I wasn't going to rush.

For years, I had wanted my father to explain himself.

Now I had a chance to begin understanding him, and I knew I couldn't do that by deciding what every object meant before I had even looked at it.

I turned back to the box.

The shoes remained beside me.

The envelope rested near my hand.

For the first time, I felt that the things my father had left might be more than reminders of what I had lost.

They might tell me something about the man I had never fully understood.

I reached toward the box again.

This time, I didn't hesitate.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Box Had Been Prepared With More Care Than I Expected, and Every Small Detail Made Me Question My Memories

I turned the envelope over once more.
