She turned when she heard him, then continued what she was doing without joining us.

I opened the album.

The first pages held photographs from our wedding, a few holidays, and pictures of Ethan as a baby.

His father appeared in almost every other picture.

He was holding Ethan against his chest, carrying him on his shoulders, or looking down at him with an expression that seemed to belong only to the two of them.

Ethan touched one photograph with the tip of his finger.

“Was I really that small?”

“You were smaller than that at first.”

He smiled.

“Did Dad carry me everywhere?”

“Not everywhere. But he carried you a lot.”

I remembered how his father used to tuck Ethan against one arm while reaching for a cup with the other. I remembered telling him that the baby would never learn to sit still if he always carried him.

He had smiled and said there would be plenty of time for sitting still later.

At the time, I thought he was being sentimental.

Now, the memory made my throat tighten.

Ethan turned the page.

There were photographs of the three of us at a park, sitting beside a lake, and standing in front of our old apartment.

In one picture, Ethan was asleep in his father's arms.

The light behind them was bright enough to blur the edge of the photograph.

Ethan stared at it for a long time.

“Where was this?”

“At the park near our old place.”

“Was it inside?”

“No. We were outside. That's sunlight behind you.”

He leaned closer.

“It looks like a room.”

I studied the picture.

The background was washed out, and the branches of a tree had disappeared into the brightness. I could understand why a child might see a wall or a ceiling where there was only sunlight.

“Pictures can look different from how things really were,” I told him.

He nodded, but he did not turn the page.

“Did Dad ever take pictures inside rooms?”

“Of course.”

“Can we see those?”

I thought about it.

There were more photographs in the album, but I could not remember every place we had visited or every room where his father had taken a picture.

“We can look through the rest.”

He seemed satisfied with that.

We turned the pages slowly.

There were pictures from birthdays, a family dinner, and a visit to my mother's house. In one photograph, Ethan sat on the floor beside a small table while his father crouched behind him.

In another, his father stood near a window with one hand resting on the back of a chair.

Ethan studied that one too.

“Did Dad like windows?”

I almost smiled.

“He liked looking outside when he was thinking.”

“Did he think a lot?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

“Lots of things. Work, bills, what we needed from the store. Sometimes he thought about things he didn't tell me right away.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Why not?”

“Sometimes people need time to understand their own thoughts before they can explain them.”

He considered that answer.

Then he asked, “Did he have secrets?”

I felt my fingers tighten against the album.

Every parent wants to give a child a simple answer to a question like that.

The truth was that adults had private thoughts, old memories, and conversations they did not share with everyone. Some of those things were harmless. Some were painful. Some were simply unfinished.

“I don't know everything your dad thought about,” I said. “But having private thoughts doesn't automatically mean someone is hiding something bad.”

Ethan looked down at the photograph.

“Okay.”

I wanted to ask him whether the room he remembered looked anything like the places in the pictures.

I wanted to point to the windows and ask whether he remembered the light coming from one of them.

I wanted to know whether his father had been standing or sitting, whether there had been a door, and whether the room had been familiar.

Instead, I let him turn the page.

We reached the end of the album without finding a picture that answered his question.

Ethan closed it gently.

“Can I keep this one out?”

He pointed to the photograph of himself asleep in his father's arms.

“Of course.”

He removed it from the plastic sleeve with careful fingers.

I watched him carry it to the living room and place it on the small table beside the couch.

He did not hide it or turn it facedown.

He simply wanted it nearby.

My mother came to sit beside me after he left.

“You did well,” she said.

“I only looked at photographs with him.”

“That's what he asked you to do.”

I stared at the open album.

“I keep wanting to ask him what he remembers.”

“Of course you do.”

“What if he remembers something important and we miss it because I don't ask?”

My mother took a seat across from me.

“What if he starts looking for an answer because he thinks you need him to find one?”

I looked at her.

She was not accusing me.

She was reminding me of something I already knew.

Ethan was nine. He wanted to make me happy. He wanted to solve problems when he believed they belonged to our family.

If I treated his uncertain memory like a mystery we had to solve, he might begin to search for details simply because he thought they were expected.

“I don't want to do that to him,” I said.

“Then don't.”

She said it gently.

“You can answer the questions he asks. You can listen when he wants to talk. You don't have to turn every quiet moment into an interview.”

I closed the album.

The word interview stayed with me.

That afternoon, Ethan played in the living room while my mother prepared lunch. I took the photograph album back to the cabinet, but I left the picture he had chosen on the table.

Then I checked my phone.

There was a message from the officer who had spoken to me about the envelope.

He asked whether anything new had happened and whether we had touched or moved the item.

I replied that it remained where it had been documented.

I also told him Ethan had mentioned a room in which he thought he might have been with his father, but that he could not identify it or explain what had happened.

The officer replied that he would add the information to his notes.

He reminded me not to assume the memory was connected to the envelope unless evidence established a connection.

I read that sentence twice.

It was the same point he had made before.

I was trying to hold two unsettling things in my mind at once, and I kept wanting them to fit together.

The barber's concern.

The envelope addressed to me.

Ethan's uncertain memory.

They had happened close together, but that did not prove they came from the same cause.

I put my phone down.

A few minutes later, Ethan came into the kitchen.

“Mom, can I ask you something?”

“Yes.”

“If I remember something wrong, will you tell me?”

I turned away from the counter.

“Can you explain what you mean?”

He shrugged.

“Like if I think I remember a room, but it wasn't really like that.”

I pulled out a chair for him.

“I might not know whether every detail is right. But I'll be honest with you about what I know and what I don't know.”

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of the chair.

“What if I can't remember the rest?”

“Then you don't have to force yourself to.”

“But what if I should remember?”

I reached across the table and took his hand.

“You don't have to remember something just because you feel you should. If something comes back to you, you can tell me. If it doesn't, that's okay too.”

He looked at our hands.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He nodded.

Then he stood up and returned to the living room.

I remained at the table after he left.

The promise sounded simple.

Keeping it would require me to tolerate questions I could not answer and memories I could not verify.

I had always believed that being a good mother meant finding solutions whenever my child was frightened.

That morning, I began to understand that sometimes it meant refusing to invent a solution just to make the fear go away.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Envelope Stayed Closed While I Learned to Separate What I Knew From What I Feared

The next morning, Ethan came downstairs holding a photograph album.
