she told me.

I looked toward the front door.

"I understand."

She explained that a troubling conversation and an unexplained object could both deserve attention without necessarily having the same cause.

I knew she was right.

I had spent the last day trying to fit every detail into one explanation.

The barber.

The envelope.

The police.

The sound Ethan thought he had heard.

The room he thought he remembered.

I had treated them like pieces of the same puzzle because I wanted the picture to become clear.

But wanting a connection didn't make one real.

I thanked the officer and ended the call.

Then I wrote down everything I could remember about the previous day.

I included the time we had left for the haircut.

The time we had returned.

Where the envelope had been sitting.

What Ethan had said.

What the officers had asked.

I kept the facts separate from my guesses.

When I finished, the page looked less frightening than my thoughts had felt.

It was still a list of unanswered questions.

But at least I could see which ones were real.

That evening, I found Ethan sitting on his bedroom floor.

His notebook lay open in front of him.

He was drawing a rectangle with a small square near the top.

I stopped at the doorway.

"What are you working on?"

He covered part of the page with his hand.

"Just drawing."

I almost asked him to show me.

Then I remembered how carefully he had guarded the notebook the previous day.

I didn't want him to feel that every private thought had become evidence.

"All right," I said.

I turned to leave.

"Mom?"

I looked back.

He moved his hand away from the page.

"Do you want to see?"

"If you want me to."

He turned the notebook around.

The drawing was simple.

A room with a door.

A square near the ceiling that might have been a light.

A small figure stood near one wall.

Another figure was drawn beside it.

The lines were uneven, and the figures had no faces.

I sat on the floor beside him.

"Can you tell me about it?"

Ethan studied the page.

"I think this is the room."

My heart began beating faster.

I tried not to show it.

"What makes you think that?"

He pointed to the square.

"I remember the light."

"And the people?"

He touched the smaller figure.

"I think this is me."

Then he pointed to the other one.

"I think that's Dad."

I looked at the drawing.

There was nothing in it that could tell me where the room was.

Nothing that explained why Ethan remembered it.

Nothing that proved the scene had happened exactly as he pictured it.

I wanted to ask him whether anyone else had been there.

I wanted to know what his father had said.

I wanted to know why the memory had returned now.

But I didn't ask.

Instead, I said, "Thank you for showing me."

Ethan looked relieved.

"You're not mad?"

"No. Why would I be mad?"

He shrugged.

"I don't know."

I placed the notebook gently on the floor.

"Remembering something isn't wrong."

He nodded.

Then he looked at the drawing again.

"I can't remember what Dad was saying."

"That's okay."

"I think he was talking to someone."

I felt the urge to lean forward.

"Who?"

Ethan frowned.

"I don't know. I can't remember."

I kept my hands in my lap.

"Then we won't guess."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

That was the first time all day that I felt we had done something right.

We hadn't solved anything.

We hadn't discovered who left the envelope.

We hadn't found out what the barber had noticed.

But Ethan had shown me something that troubled him, and I hadn't filled the silence with my own fears.

That mattered.

Before bed, I asked whether he wanted to keep the notebook in his room or put it away somewhere safe.

He chose his nightstand.

I helped him clear a space beside the lamp.

The drawing lay open on top.

I looked at it one last time.

A door.

A light.

Two figures.

I wondered whether it was a memory or simply the shape of a question he had carried for too long.

I couldn't know.

And I was beginning to understand that I didn't have to decide immediately.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The More I Tried to Keep the House Ordinary, the More I Understood That Ethan Needed Me to Listen Without Supplying the Answers

My sister was still on the phone with Ethan when I arrived home.
