Police officers came to my house because somebody left an envelope with my name on it. I don't know whether those things are connected, but I can't afford another conversation where you tell me you're worried and then refuse to say why."

He looked down at the counter.

"You're right."

That surprised me.

I had expected him to defend himself.

Instead, he pulled out the chair and sat opposite me.

He looked tired.

Not dramatically tired.

Just like someone who had spent the night thinking about a problem he couldn't solve.

"I want to start with what I actually know," he said. "Not what I suspect."

"Good."

He folded his hands.

"When Ethan was sitting in the chair yesterday, I asked him a question about his family."

"What question?"

"I asked whether he remembered coming here with his father."

I stared at him.

"Why would you ask him that?"

"Because I thought I recognized something in him."

"What does that mean?"

He shook his head.

"I'm not explaining it well."

"Then try again."

He took a breath.

"I've seen children come into this shop with their parents for years. You notice things. The way a child sits. The way he watches the door. The things he says without realizing he's saying them."

I waited.

"Yesterday, Ethan mentioned something about his father. It made me think he might remember a visit from when he was much younger."

I felt my shoulders tighten.

"What did he say?"

The barber looked uncomfortable.

"I don't want to put words in his mouth. He was talking about a place he remembered, but he wasn't certain about the details."

I thought of the room Ethan had described the night before.

The light.

His father.

The memory he couldn't hold on to.

"Did he tell you about a room?"

The barber looked up sharply.

I noticed.

"Why?" he asked.

"Because he said something like that to me last night."

The barber leaned back.

"Then perhaps it's worth asking him about it carefully."

"Carefully?"

"Without telling him what you think he remembers."

I didn't like how much sense that made.

If I gave Ethan details, he might start building a memory around them.

I had to be careful not to confuse my questions with his answers.

"Is that all?" I asked.

"No."

I waited.

The barber looked toward the front window.

"There was something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"I asked him whether he remembered anyone else being there with his father."

"And?"

"He said he wasn't sure."

I closed my eyes for a moment.

I wanted certainty.

I wanted the barber to tell me exactly what Ethan had said, exactly what it meant, and exactly what I should do next.

Instead, I was learning that even the people who might help me had only fragments.

"What made you decide to speak to me privately?"

The barber looked at me.

"Because when I asked about his father, Ethan became very quiet. He looked at me in a way that made me think the memory was upsetting him."

"Did he seem afraid of his father?"

"I can't say that."

"Did he tell you his father had hurt him?"

"No."

"Did he say someone had hurt him?"

"No."

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

The barber watched me carefully.

"I don't want you to hear something I didn't say."

I looked away.

"I know."

But I also knew how quickly a parent's mind could move from uncertainty to the worst possible explanation.

I had already done it.

I had imagined someone entering my house.

I had imagined the envelope as a warning.

I had wondered whether my son had been hiding something terrible from me.

None of those thoughts had been based on proof.

They had been based on fear.

I didn't want fear to become the only thing I trusted.

"Did Ethan say anything about the envelope?" I asked.

The barber shook his head.

"I didn't know there was an envelope until you called me."

"Then you have no idea who left it?"

"No."

I studied his face.

He appeared sincere, but sincerity was not proof.

I had to remind myself of that.

The barber reached beneath the counter and brought out a small notebook.

He opened it to a page near the middle.

"I wrote down what I remembered after you left yesterday."

He didn't hand it to me immediately.

"I did that because I didn't want to change the details in my head."

I understood that.

"May I see it?"

He turned the notebook toward me.

There were only a few lines.

A question about Ethan's father.

A note about a childhood memory.

And a reminder that Ethan had seemed unsettled when the conversation turned to the past.

There was nothing that explained the envelope.

Nothing that proved the barber had discovered a secret.

But there was enough to confirm that he had noticed a change in my son.

I looked up.

"Why didn't you tell me this yesterday?"

"I thought you might take him home and ask him questions before I had a chance to explain what I meant."

I frowned.

"Why would that be a problem?"

"Because I didn't want him to feel like he'd done something wrong."

I looked at the notebook again.

The barber had not accused Ethan of anything.

He had not suggested that my son was lying.

He had simply noticed that a memory seemed to trouble him.

That was all.

And yet, the way he had spoken the day before had made it sound as though he knew something far more serious.

"I wish you had said that," I told him.

"So do I."

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since the call.

"Why did you say you thought I would call?"

He rubbed a hand over his jaw.

"Because I knew you wouldn't leave it alone."

"That isn't much of an explanation."

"No," he said. "It isn't."

I stood.

I had come expecting answers, but I was leaving with something different.

A reason to ask better questions.

I thanked him for speaking honestly.

Before I reached the door, he called after me.

"Claire?"

I turned.

"Don't make him remember something he isn't sure about."

I held his gaze.

"I won't."

I stepped outside and stood on the pavement.

The street was busy now.

A delivery van was parked near the corner.

Two people walked past carrying bags.

The world looked ordinary again.

But I no longer believed that ordinary appearances told me everything I needed to know.

I had gone to the shop hoping the barber would explain what was happening.

Instead, he had shown me how little either of us understood.

That wasn't the answer I wanted.

It was the answer I had.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Went Home Ready to Ask Ethan About the Room He Remembered, Then Realized My Questions Could Become Part of the Memory

Ethan woke before my alarm.
