Ethan's mother."

There was a short silence.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

I closed my eyes.

That was not what I had expected him to say.

"You were expecting me?"

"I thought you might have some questions."

"Some questions?"

I tried to keep my voice low because Ethan was close enough to hear me.

"You told me you needed to speak with me about my son. Then I came home and found an envelope with my name on it, and the police came to my house."

The barber didn't answer immediately.

I heard a faint noise on his end of the line.

Perhaps he was moving something across a counter.

Perhaps he was deciding what to say.

"I didn't know about the envelope," he finally said.

"I didn't say you did."

"I just want you to understand that."

"I want to understand a lot of things right now."

He breathed out slowly.

"Is Ethan with you?"

"Yes."

"Is he all right?"

I looked toward the sofa.

Ethan had pulled a cushion into his lap and was holding it against his stomach.

"He's here. He's listening to everything, even when he pretends not to."

The barber was quiet again.

Then he said, "Could you come by tomorrow morning? I'd rather talk to you face-to-face."

I felt my patience slipping.

"You had the chance to talk to me today."

"I know."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I wasn't sure what I had noticed, and I didn't want to frighten you with something I couldn't explain."

I looked at the envelope.

"That hasn't worked out very well."

"No," he admitted. "It hasn't."

I wanted to ask him what he had noticed.

I wanted the answer immediately.

But his hesitation sounded different now.

It didn't seem like the hesitation of someone trying to invent a story.

It sounded like someone who was afraid of getting something wrong.

That didn't mean he was right.

It didn't mean I should trust him.

It only meant I needed to hear what he had to say.

"Tomorrow morning," I said.

"Nine o'clock, if that works for you."

"It does."

"And Claire?"

"What?"

"Don't let what I said at the shop convince you that I know more than I do."

I stared at the little ceramic dish.

"Then tell me exactly what you know."

"I will tomorrow."

The call ended.

I stood still for a moment, holding the phone against my ear even though the line had gone silent.

Then I lowered it.

Ethan looked up at me.

"Was that the barber?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

"He wants to talk to me tomorrow."

"About me?"

"Yes."

He pulled the cushion closer.

"Is he going to tell you something bad?"

I sat beside him.

"I don't know, sweetheart."

That was the hardest answer to give him.

I wanted to reassure him.

I wanted to say that nothing was wrong, that the envelope was probably harmless, and that the barber had simply misunderstood something.

But I couldn't promise those things.

I had spent too much of the afternoon pretending that uncertainty was something I could solve by choosing a comforting explanation.

I wasn't going to do that to Ethan.

"We'll listen to what he says," I told him. "Then we'll decide what to do."

Ethan nodded.

He didn't look satisfied.

Neither did I.

That evening, I made dinner while he sat at the kitchen table and drew in a notebook.

He usually talked while I cooked.

He told me about school, his friends, and whatever had caught his attention that day.

This time, he drew quietly.

I watched his pencil move across the page.

"What are you drawing?"

He turned the notebook slightly away.

"Nothing."

I recognized the word.

It was the same word he had used when I asked what had been bothering him.

I didn't press him.

I stirred the food on the stove and tried to keep my thoughts on the evening ahead.

After dinner, Ethan went upstairs to brush his teeth.

I remained in the kitchen, cleaning plates that were already clean enough.

I needed something to do with my hands.

The envelope remained where the officers had left it.

I had resisted touching it because I didn't want to interfere with whatever steps they might take.

I also didn't want to discover something I wasn't prepared to read.

That was the truth.

I was afraid of a piece of paper.

Not because paper could hurt me.

Because words could.

My phone rang while I was wiping the counter.

It was my mother.

I answered immediately.

"Hi, Mom."

"What's wrong?"

I stopped wiping.

"Why do you think something is wrong?"

"Because you called twice, and your message sounded strange."

I looked toward the stairs.

"Something happened at home today."

She went quiet.

I explained that the police had come by and that an unfamiliar envelope had been found inside the house.

I told her it had my name on it.

I didn't tell her about the barber's warning yet.

I wanted to keep the conversation focused on what I actually knew.

"Did you put an envelope in the dish before you left?" I asked.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Claire, I haven't been inside your house since before I left for your sister's."

I knew that.

Still, hearing her say it made the last ordinary explanation disappear.

"Do you have any idea who might have left it?"

"No. What did the police say?"

"They're trying to figure that out."

She sighed.

"Are you and Ethan safe?"

"I think so."

"You think so?"

I could hear the concern in her voice.

"I don't know what else to tell you, Mom."

She was silent for a moment.

Then she asked whether I wanted her to come home.

I almost said yes.

The thought of having another adult beside me was comforting.

But she was visiting my sister, and I didn't want to pull her away without knowing whether it was necessary.

"Not yet," I said. "I'll call if I need you."

"Promise me you'll do that."

"I promise."

After we hung up, I stood by the kitchen window.

The yard was dark.

The glass reflected the room behind me.

For a moment, I thought I saw someone standing near the doorway.

Then I realized it was my own reflection.

I turned away.

I was letting fear change the way I saw my home.

That frightened me almost as much as the envelope.

Ethan came downstairs a little later.

He was wearing his pajamas and carrying the notebook from earlier.

He stopped near the table.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Can I sleep in your room tonight?"

I looked at him.

He rarely asked for that anymore.

When he was younger, he sometimes climbed into my bed after a bad dream.

Lately, he had been proud of sleeping in his own room.

I put down the dish towel.

"Of course you can."

He nodded and went upstairs.

I followed him a few minutes later.

We made a space for him beside me.

He placed his notebook on the nightstand, then climbed under the blanket.

I switched off the lamp.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then his voice came from the darkness.

"Mom, do you remember everything about Dad?"

I turned toward him.

"No. Nobody remembers everything."

"Do you remember when he used to take me places?"

I swallowed.

"Some things."

"Like what?"

I thought about the memories I had kept for him.

The small details.

The ordinary days.

The times his father had made him laugh.

The things I hoped would remain with him even as he grew older.

"I remember him holding you when you were little," I said. "You used to grab his shirt whenever he tried to put you down."

Ethan was quiet.

Then he asked, "Did I know him well?"

I didn't answer immediately.

He had been young.

Too young to remember everything clearly.

"I think you remember more than you realize," I finally said.

He didn't respond.

I could hear his breathing.

I wondered whether he was already asleep.

Then he whispered something that made me sit up.

"I think I remember a room."

I turned on the bedside lamp.

"What room?"

He looked at me, suddenly uncertain.

"I don't know."

"Can you describe it?"

He frowned.

"There was a light. And I think Dad was there."

I kept my voice gentle.

"Was it here at home?"

"I don't know, Mom."

He pressed his lips together.

"I can't see it properly."

I wanted to ask a hundred questions.

Instead, I watched him struggle to find words for something that might have been a real memory, a dream, or a mixture of both.

"That's all right," I told him. "You don't have to figure it out tonight."

He nodded and lay back down.

I switched off the lamp again.

But I remained awake long after he fell asleep.

The barber had seen something in Ethan that had made him stop talking.

An envelope had appeared inside my home.

And now my son was trying to tell me about a memory he couldn't quite reach.

I didn't know whether those things were connected.

I only knew I could no longer treat them as separate worries.

The next morning, I would hear what the barber had to say.

Until then, I had to accept that I didn't have the answers.

And for once, I couldn't make myself believe that waiting would make the questions disappear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: At Nine the Next Morning, I Returned to the Barbershop and Asked the Man Behind the Chair to Stop Speaking in Half-Answers

The phone kept ringing.
