4 – I Had Spent Years Believing I Knew What My Son Remembered, Until One Ordinary Afternoon Forced Me to Question That Belief

After the officers left, I stood beside the front door for a long time.

I listened to their footsteps fade.

Then I listened for anything else.

A car passing.

A neighbor opening a gate.

Someone walking along the pavement.

Every ordinary sound seemed to demand my attention.

I checked the lock again.

Then I turned away from the door and found Ethan waiting in the hallway.

He looked smaller than he had that morning.

Not physically.

He was still the same nine-year-old boy who had insisted that three weeks was an unreasonable amount of time to go without a haircut.

But something about his expression had changed.

He was watching me carefully.

I wondered how long he had been doing that.

"Come sit with me," I said.

We went into the living room.

Ethan climbed onto the sofa and tucked his legs beneath him.

I sat beside him, leaving enough space for him to move if he wanted.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I should have asked much earlier.

"Have you been worried about something lately?"

He looked at the floor.

"Not really."

I waited.

He picked at a loose thread on his sweatshirt.

"Sometimes."

I felt a familiar urge to ask what, when, and why.

Instead, I let him think.

Children don't always know how to explain what frightens them.

Sometimes they need a little time to find the words.

Finally, he looked at me.

"Do you think people can forget things that happened to them?"

I felt the question settle between us.

"Yes," I said. "Sometimes people forget things."

"Even important things?"

"Even important things."

He looked away again.

I wanted to know why he was asking.

I wanted to connect his question to the barber, the envelope, and the strange sound he had heard near the house.

But I didn't want to turn his uncertainty into something larger by giving it my own fears.

So I asked him what he meant.

He shook his head.

"Nothing."

I knew it wasn't nothing.

I also knew I couldn't force him to explain.

"All right," I said. "But if you remember something, you can tell me."

He nodded.

Then he leaned against me.

I put an arm around his shoulders.

For a little while, we stayed that way.

I could feel the tension in his body slowly ease.

Mine didn't.

My thoughts kept returning to the barber.

I needed to speak with him again.

I needed to understand why he had looked at Ethan as though something about the boy had surprised him.

And I needed to know whether the envelope had anything to do with what he had wanted to tell me.

I didn't know how those things could be connected.

I only knew that ignoring them would not make them disappear.

Later, I prepared something for Ethan to eat.

He picked at his food and asked whether he could go upstairs.

I let him.

I watched him climb the stairs, then turned back to the kitchen.

His glass of water remained on the table.

He had barely touched it.

I rinsed it and placed it beside the sink.

Then I stood there with my hands resting on the counter.

I thought about the way he had looked at the envelope.

He had recognized that something was wrong before I did.

He had tried to tell me.

And I had initially treated his concern as another question I could answer quickly and move past.

I felt ashamed.

Not because I had known what was happening and ignored it.

I hadn't known.

But I had been so confident that I understood my son that I hadn't considered how much he might be carrying without me.

I dried my hands and returned to the living room.

The envelope was still on the table near the entrance.

I could see it from where I stood.

White paper.

My name.

Nothing else.

I didn't touch it.

Instead, I called my mother.

The call went to voicemail.

I left a short message asking her to call me when she had a chance.

I didn't mention the envelope.

I didn't want to frighten her before I understood what I was dealing with.

Then I called my sister.

She answered after several rings.

I asked how their visit was going and whether our mother was with her.

She said she was.

That ruled out the one explanation Ethan had offered.

My mother hadn't left the envelope.

At least, not that day.

I ended the call and sat down.

The house was quiet again.

I could hear Ethan moving around upstairs.

A drawer opened.

A few footsteps crossed the floor.

Then silence.

I looked at the clock.

Only a few hours had passed since the haircut.

It felt as though the day had stretched into something much longer.

I picked up my phone and stared at the screen.

I considered calling the barbershop immediately.

But I didn't know what I would say.

The barber had asked to speak privately.

I had every reason to call him back.

Still, I hesitated.

Part of me was afraid he would tell me something I couldn't take back.

That fear embarrassed me.

I was a grown woman.

I had raised a child.

I had dealt with problems before.

Yet I found myself sitting in my own living room, afraid to make a phone call because I couldn't control what I might hear.

I put the phone down.

Then I picked it up again.

Before I could make the call, Ethan came downstairs.

He had changed into a clean shirt.

His hair looked different now, shorter around the sides, with the back neatly trimmed.

He stopped beside the table.

I watched his eyes move toward the envelope.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Are you going to open it?"

I looked at the envelope.

"I don't know yet."

"Why not?"

"Because I want to understand why the officers were concerned about it."

He considered that.

Then he asked something I hadn't expected.

"What if it's about Dad?"

I felt as though the room had shifted slightly beneath me.

I looked at him.

"Why would you think it was about your father?"

Ethan shrugged, but he didn't look away.

"I don't know."

I studied his face.

For months, he had asked questions about his father that seemed to come from nowhere.

He wanted to know about the years before he was born.

He wanted to know whether his father had kept secrets.

And now he was looking at an envelope addressed to me and wondering whether it might be connected to the same person.

I had always tried to give him answers that were appropriate for his age.

Sometimes I told him what I knew.

Sometimes I told him I wasn't sure.

And sometimes I changed the subject because I didn't know how to explain the complicated parts without making him feel responsible for them.

I had told myself that I was being careful.

Now I wondered whether my silence had left room for him to invent explanations that were more frightening than the truth.

I reached for his hand.

"Your father is part of your life, Ethan. That won't change."

He nodded.

"But I don't know what's inside that envelope," I continued. "And I won't pretend that I do."

He looked down at our hands.

"Okay."

I squeezed his fingers gently.

"If we find out that it's something important, we'll deal with it together."

He leaned against the table.

For the first time that afternoon, he seemed to believe me.

I wanted to hold on to that feeling.

But the envelope remained between us and the answers we needed.

I thought about calling the barber again.

This time, I knew what I would say.

I would tell him that the police had come to our house.

I would tell him about the envelope.

And I would ask him to explain what he had noticed about Ethan.

No more vague warnings.

No more leaving me to guess.

I picked up my phone and began searching for the barbershop's number.

Ethan watched me.

"Are you calling him?"

"Yes."

"Can I stay here?"

"Of course."

I pressed the call button.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

I waited, listening to the sound in my ear.

Whatever the barber had been afraid to tell me, I was going to hear it now.

Because the envelope had changed something.

Before that afternoon, I had believed the questions about Ethan's father were simply part of growing up.

Now I could no longer be sure.

And I was beginning to understand that protecting my son would require more than keeping difficult truths away from him.

It might mean facing those truths myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Call I Had Been Afraid to Make Finally Went Through, but the Barber’s First Question Made Me Wonder What He Already Knew

After the officers left, I stood beside the front door for a long time.
